Clear, golden yellow body; sparse carbonation; thin, frothy head, white. Slight wild aroma infused with fruity esters; green apple and pear. Light sweetness counterpointed with a light phenolic edge; mild fruity esters. Medium body; glass smooth mouthfeel; modest amount of dryness.

I didn't really pickup anything with smoked sea salt or oysters. An okay beer at best.

Yes, how much sweetness is perceived will be subjective.

I would be surprised to read that some BA would state that Shiner Bock is "not sweet at all" but there is indeed a situation of 'shades of gray' here.

    Cheers!

Oh yeah, I wasn't meaning that Shiner was dry by any means ha. Just that my recollection wasn't that it has the sticky, residual sweetness that I was getting from the New Mag beer.

    Fair enough.

As I mentioned previously it was the caramel aspect that mostly motivated my question: "I personally pick up "caramel" in Shiner Bock which motivated my question to you since you mentioned "caramel" a couple of times in your post."

Maybe some day you will decide to retry a Shiner Bock for 'science'?

    Cheers!

I looked up my review of this, from way back in 2014

    My thoughts then:

"Honestly, I thought this would be a disaster. As it is, just odd. The smoked salt leaves a lingering ashy character, and dirty mouthfeel for me. Interesting to try once, that is it for me."

Of coarse beers change, and tastes change over time, and peoples perspectives and all that ha. Though, true to my review, I don't think I have had it since ha.

Shipping Out of Boston an Amber Lager from Jacks Abby. I recently started seeing
Jack's Abby beers at a local retailed and have always enjoyed Amber Lagers and grabbed a 4 pack for $8.99. This is a pretty much a by the book brew but a very good one. It looks as you would expect, Amber body, white head. There is a nice malty aroma and taste. The mouthfeel is medium the finish off dry. It is noted on the can that this beer is decoction mashed. Overall an excellent beer at a great price.

    Good afternoon NBW
We are having some family in for the holiday and I was tasked with beer purchases. Normally, I would not pick up a Dogfish Head mix pack, but I did yesterday.
12oz can stamped SEP 2023 D 062 3 2330 11 poured into a shaker pint glass at fridge temp 4.8 % ABV. The beer pours very bright light golden yellow with nearly white head. The head recedes to a pencil thin ring and island. Minimal lacing. The aroma is mild with sweet pale malt and floral & grassy noted. The taste is semisweet pale malt with a light toasted flavor. There's some grassy and floral hop flavor with a moderately bitter finish. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. No diacetyl or off flavors that I can detect, but it drinks a bit flabby for a pilsner. Overall, good to very good depending on your expectations.

    Cheers all!

I didn't catch this thread until today. I wouldn't have been able to participate since it was started in the evening, and I had my meal early in the day (fasting / Good Friday), though the National Beer Day tie-in makes sense in terms of celebrating a beer holiday. Perhaps in the future we can mention whether we plan to open the following week thread on the following Friday to allow folks the ability to prepare.

Malty beers are hit and miss for me, but I typically like / love Rauchbiers, and I'm squeezing this Lenten beer in the day before Easter. This from a suburban brewery I visited two Summers ago and hope to do the same this year, though both beers this weekend were brewed and canned outside of their public taproom breweries.

    Art History Fastenbier

Can Notes: Single 16 oz can purchased 3/2 from Beer on the Wall for $3.97. Canned 2/15/23, can stamp states contains no meat. Franconian Style Dark Lenten Lager.4.8% ABV, Keep Refrigerated Below 37 F. Brewed and Packed for Art History Brewing at Geneva Lager Works, Geneva Illinois. Brewer Notes: German Vienna, CaraRed & Beech Smoked Malt, Hallertau Hersbrucker Hops.

Appearance: Single slow pour into an imperial nonic glass. Clear chestnut colour pour, bronze when held to light. Mild carbonation, egg white tan creamy head sustained for a few minutes before leaving a creamy cover over the base and minor thin bubble lacing throughought. 4.25

Aroma: Nice smoked sausage aroma leads, caramel and fresh pumpernickel bread follows. Mild in strength, stronger in pleasure. 4.0

Taste: Consistent with aroma. A nice smoked malt leads, sausage vibes lighter, works well with the bready malt also more. Bittering hops present, everything even keeled and easily approachable, even for those with aversion to this style. 4.0

    Mouthfeel:
Light and easy drinking, mild carbonation, body light and watery. Smoke leads overall, neither dry or bitter, balanced. Light smoke lingers pleasantly on the finish. 3.75

Overall: I could always use more cowbell and smoke, but the light touch delivered a very nice and easy Rauchbier, flavors could have been a bit strong, but this is very enjoyable as is and will look to pick up more next lent. 4.0

See you New Beer Easter Sunday!

    I agree with you here.

I discussed Blue Hen in a past NBW thread and I remarked:

"This beer is a mixed bag. I enjoyed the aroma aspects of this beer but the almost insipid level of flavor was disappointing for me."

    Cheers!

12oz can stamped SEP 2023 D 066 3 0612 11 poured into a shaker pint glass at fridge temp 4.9% ABV. The beer pours slightly hazy in a dull yellow color with white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and island. The aroma is mild with lime and coriander filtered through mild tartness. The taste is slightly sour, limey beerish something with a hint of the wheat malt in the aftertaste. Negligible bitterness. The mouthfeel is thin bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. The salt is really only revealed in the slick feel for me. Overall, drinkable as a Gatorade alternative, but not a go to beer for me.

Probably my last new beer for today. Cheers all!

The Double was awesome, but this beats it out. So much boozy complexity, it's just loaded with dark fruit, barrel, and sweet malt. A great beer to celebrate the milestone

Atelier VRAI - Lick Here: For The Final World Peace

Imperial New England IPA with Galaxy, El Dorado and Idaho 7 hops, from Germany (7.5%).

Pours a hazy, orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical, citrus, stone fruit hops, with notes of passion fruit, papaya, grapefruit and peach, as well as hints of earthy accents.

Taste is an excellent balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, slightly earthy and resinous hops, with tropical, citrus and stone fruit notes of passion fruit, papaya, grapefruit, orange and peach, as well as hints of black tea and pine. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some passion fruit, grapefruit and hints of black tea and pine in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This is a NEIPA right after my own heart and proves to me once more that Atelier Vrai (formerly Atelier der Braukünste) is making the best NEIPAs in Germany right now. IT has got that great balance of fruity, juicy and earthy resinous notes to it that I love, while finishing with a good bitterness. The hops stand out quite vibrant and well-defined here, with just a tiny bit of hop burn in the aftertaste that is hardly worth mentioning though.

Drinking this makes me feel that I must have been wrong about assuming a 9-month BB-date for their beers, because there is no way this is 6 months old. Or perhaps they truly are brewing geniuses, but it's probably the former.

I guess I owe them an apology for the strongly-worded email I sent them about their BB-dates a few days ago :flushed:.

Batch #7, December 2020. Poured from a capped 750mL bottle into my Troubadour tulip.

Nearly clear stile de grain yellow with a lasting finger of off white soft peaks. Fine sandy lacing; faint legs; very good retention.

Complex sweet floral aromatics reveal the honey, working together with the malt and just a whisper of winter fruit punctuated funk from the wild microbes.

Dry, cider-kissed palate entry with unripe pear, green plum, and a gentle acidity. Lightly bready, crisp malt backbone, low earthy bitterness throughout. Finishes dry but with residual evolving honey flavors - interesting balance. Low floral notes and maybe a touch of citrus and white pepper as the beer warms.

Creamy, medium-bodied, well carbonated. Lightly warming, and not-quite-refreshing.

Subtle, interesting domestic take on the style.

Another weekend, another birthday party…. and I have survived!

My new beer today is one I’ve been looking forward to trying for a bit. I’ve been told the brewer at Private Press used to brew for Jackie O’s. I think Jackie O’s makes some stellar barrel aged stouts. I got a few Private Press bottles a while back. This will be my first foray into their beer.

Plato’s Shadow Double Barrel Aged Blend of Imperial Stouts.

Pours a thick dark black/brown with negligible head that ends as the thinnest of rings around the edge of the glass.

The barrel jumps out at the nose first. This is followed by some stewed fruit, fig, and prune notes and a light roasty aspect trails behind.

The taste follows closely. The barrel is in the forefront. Lots of stewed fruit, a little chocolate, liquorice and some roasted grain. The flavours are exceptionally well integrated once you get past the initial barrel notes. Despite the high ABV (14.1%), there is no booziness. This is very enjoyable.

The body is full as expected. Mouth coating. Balanced. Lighter carbonation.

This is a top tier imperial stout. I’m very glad
To have tried and would make an effort to be able to have it again.

    Cheers!

Prairie Artisan Basic Rebecca BBA Imperial Pumpkin Stout, 13.6% ABV. Pours black with a 3/4 finger brown head, which is HUGE for a Prairie stout! Nose is pumpkin spice with ginger stealing the show. Taste follows, ginger forward, plus bourbon burn on the close. Slightly sweet, slightly bitter. Decent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. This is mostly a BBA ginger beer.

Clear, golden body; minor bit of coarse carbonation; relatively thin head, white colored and semi-creamy texture. Wonderful initial aroma of delicate cereal grain which gives way to a nice fragrance of fresh berries and tropical fruit. Simple pleasing taste; not much grain flavor per se but a nice bit of fruitiness and weak tea. Medium body; mildly coarse of the palate with a gentle underlying warmth.

This is a decent beer but the weakest in flavor of all the Hanabi beers I've had to date.
