Alus Darbnīca Labietis - Peternis Apinis

Double East Coast IPA with Columbus, Cascade, Centennial, Citra and Amarillo hops, From Latvia (8.2%).

Pours a cloudy, deep, reddish mahogany coloration with a medium, creamy, lasting head. Smells of bready, quite caramelly malt and citrus, resinous and earthy hops, with hints of grapefruit and pine coming through.

Taste is a great balance of bready, caramel malt and fruity, earthy, herbal and slightly floral and resinous hops, with citrus notes of grapefruit and tangerine, as well as some pine and strong earthy accents lingering in the aftertaste. Finishes with a strong bitterness and some grapefruit and earthy, herbal accents and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a proper old-school East Coast IPA with a very strong caramel malt backbone and bitter, earthy, herbal and resinous hops, with some fruity, zesty citrus accents as well. The caramel malt sweetness is balanced very well by the strong hop bitterness and I really like the focus on earthy, herbal, resinous hops here, with the zesty citrus accents adding a great, refreshing quality to this.

Yet another great beer from this obscure to me Latvian brewery that I've really enjoyed every beer I tried from. Good to know that the place I got these from has a whole bunch more wild and barrel-aged brews in stock that I can't wait to pick up.

Happy Easter weekend, everyone. Everything about my beers today relate to NBS BIF’s.

The first beer and glassware are from my friend @FBarber , with a beer style we don’t see often in this thread (or in my glass) but one that, as the can says, should be more popular, IMHO.

And the glassware is f*cking sublime. IJS.

Pours a reddish-tinged brown color that’s clear and sports a tan colored head. Beautiful beer. The nose features roasty malts, some cocoa, and I swear I smell ripe cherries. Lovely.

The taste is led by the roasty malts and those cherries I referenced, with a bit of cocoa and caramel at the back of the palate. The flavors combined with the crisp mouthfeel makes this an absolute delight to drink.

I need more rotbiers in my beer nerd life.

Pours a beautiful ruby red color with a sudsy, sizzling off white head that is anxious to leave and let you admire the strikingly beautiful body. The nose is funky and features strawberries, raspberries, cherries, and blueberries, and a nice vanilla note.

I already know I’m gonna love this.

The taste perfectly mirrors the nose, with that vanilla flavor the perfect complement to all the tart, juicy fruit flavors. This is stupendous - it’s a tart juice box for beer nerds.

The mouthfeel is bright and effervescent. I could drink this by the gallon.

Third Moon Brewing - Born To Die

Triple Black IPA, from Canada (10%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy, mocha-colored, lasting head. Smells of quite roasted, slightly caramelly malt and citrus, resinous hops, with notes of coffee, grapefruit and pine.

Taste is an excellent balance of roasted, caramel malt and fruity, bitter, spicy, resinous hops, with citrus notes of grapefruit and some coffee, licorice, pine and black pepper coming through as well. Finishes with a strong bitterness and some roasted malt, licorice, grapefruit and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium/rich body and medium carbonation.

While the tongue couldn't quite live up to what the quite roasted nose promised, being a bit more fruity, with strong grapefruit notes, this still makes for a very well-balanced and enjoyable Triple Black IPA without a hint of booziness and great body and mouthfeel to it. I never even realized this was 10% until i double-checked.

The balance of roasted malt, cofffee, licorice and bitter, resinous, citrus hops, with strong pine and bitterness, as well as a distinct grapefruit note lingering in the aftertaste make for quite an enjoyable brew here, although I might personally have hoped for a bit more roastiness and less grapefruit. Nevertheless this makes for an excellent, well-balanced and rather intense example of the style that I thoroughly enjoyed.

To The Point from Varietal. This is a special batch of Willet bourbon barrel-aged barleywine that was blended for Brouwers Cafe for their 21st Hard Liver barleywine festival. Comes in at 12.4% ABV.

Excited to try this one! Poured at fridge temp. Pours dark brown with zero head. Murky. The nose is insane. Big toffee and bourbon. A hint of grapefruit, along with notes of plums, raisins, peaches, vanilla, and oak. Just lovely.

The taste is fantastic. Werther's caramel meets bourbon! Those are definitely the dominant flavors. Secondary flavors include plums, leather, slight citrus peel, and oak. Warming and dry. The barrel definitely gives this a strong boozy presence, but it works great with the base barleywine.

    Overall, a fantastic barleywine!

    Holy Mountain - Black Beer

No canning date, although the bottom of the can did say 'barleywine' with the breweries triangle dot logo

Poured into a nonic at fridge temp and let warm up a bit(due to feral Norsemen jr's)

Pours a muddier cola brown with an aggressive sandy tan head that nearly overflowed. 4

Subtle chocolate and just shy of seared or charred malts. Some sweetness as well. 4

Dark and malty, followed by some chocolate and roastiness. Something else going on, but I can't say what, other than it's good! 4

Very smooth for how continuous the carbo is rising in the body, lighter carbo that fades away on the tongue pretty quickly, slight dryness. 4

Overall a very good dark beer that I think pulled off porter textbook flavors better than most porters. 4.

    Thanks @snaotheus!

    Hello Saturday people of NBW!
First up for today is a Bohemian Pilsner from Medusa that @WunderLlama sent me during NBW BIF #16 and I just found it again.
Canned last April, so not sure how accurate this will be.
The pour was yellow amber with a 1 finger white head that left excellent lacing.
The aroma was lost on my Covid damaged nose.
The taste started like a great Pilsner with the floral hops and slight bitterness that gives it the edge. A touch of pepper found its way into the mix as well.
After a few minutes it transitioned into more of a sweet ale- the floral notes disappeared and malts pushed forward. Still tasty though not too Pilsner like.
The feel with the active carbonation was great, no issues there. Crisp and clean.
Thanks Maynard for sending this my way!

Time to grab another new beer as I get ready to watch the Bruins (on TV) trying to win game #62!

Ghost Orchid 6.3% IPA from Bellwoods Brewery. Also a new to me brewery.

Appearance is fairly cloudy, looks like dark grapefruit. About a 1 inch head that goes away quickly but keeps some nice lacing.
The aroma is very nice: sweet oranges/tangerines with notes of white grape juice.
Body is touch lower than medium that's nicely carbonated.
Taste is oranges and clementines upfront with notes of white grapes and a hint of pine at the back-end.
Finish is on the lighter side. Has some nice dry bitterness that unfortunately fads quickly.

Not a fan of beers that have Nelson Sauvin hops as the star. Fortunately for me the Mosaic and Simcoe hops really blend in nicely with the Nelson hops.

The more I work thru this beer the more I like it. Really nice blend of hops, only 6.3% ABV and some nice bitterness at the finish. Hope this beer continues to show up in my area and other offerings from Bellwoods.

Dark brown, nearly black body, opaque in the glass; thin, quickly dissipating head, light khaki colored. Fantastic aroma; light sense of dark malt and cocoa; excellent whiskey barrel overtone; tobacco juice. The taste amplifies the smell characteristics; milk chocolate and cocoa; bold overarching bourbon flavor; raisins and dates; Red Man chewing tobacco. Heavy body; mildly chewy texture; big, boozy warmth and heat; residual sugars gently coat the palate.

This big beer exudes nice elements of straightforward English-style imperial stout married with a healthy aging in whiskey barrels, making for a well-crafted barrel aged stout. It is rich in flavor, aroma, and mouthfeel. A nice sipping beer during the early evening. The use of all English malts and hops give this beer distinction.

    Hustle
    6% AIPA by Rheingeist

Previous beers with this name have been a rye ale and a red lager. This years it's an AIPA. They must really like the name and are likely fans of Cincinnati legend Pete Rose aka Charlie Hustle.

Poured from a twelve ounce can, the body is a very slightly hazy yellow. Good initial head was white and fluffy. Lacing was modest

Aroma offered notes of peach and mango.

Taste followed nose but the fruits were offset by a mild bitterness and a modest malt backbone. Balanced. Hop bill of Amarillo, Mosaic, and Idaho 7 created a flavorful taste with a light body.

Carbonation was strong and mouthfeel solid.

Another solid beer from the Cincinnati brewers.

Good evening NBW. Happy Easter tomorrow to those who celebrate. Missed last weekend - universe got a tad out of balance with some unexpected time commitments, but no one here is worse for wear.

So tonight we have something quite different:

The tiny print up top says Belleflower Brewing Company x Girl That Designs. The info part of the label says it is Manifesting, a double fruited sour with mango, peach, and vlementine, 5.5%. It goes on that it has Maine grown pilsner malt, flaked wheat, flaked oats, Hallertau Blanc hops, house ale yeast. I can't find much info on this one. I assume Girl That Designs did the label art which I think is very fun and quite Maine-ish.

It pours like an orange soda. It's kinda, well, Metamucil orange with some cloudiness. Quick blush of bubbles, and after that it looks still. Not a super auspicious start.

The smell is just about fantastic, so we're gaining ground rapidly on the pour. Fruit and fruit, then more fruit. It's hard to pick out the individual contributors, but they are all there. Mango, peach, orange all jump out of the glass. Fruit bomb? Well, I'd like to catch even the faintest whiff of those Maine grains listed on the can but it's simply overwhelmingly fruity.

The taste follows with the fruits taking turns in the lead. The orange is definitely clementine. There's just a bit of ripe peach sweetness and a little tiny bit of peach. I'd have to honestly say I don't find it sour at all.

Light, bright, super-fresh, and easy. A little chalky feel. Nice orange oil sensation provides a little tingle.

Ok...it's a great tasting, great smelling, refreshing and light beverage. I like it just fine. The problem is I can't find the beer. It's drinking more like a soda. On a hot summer day with meat on the fire, a cooler full of this stuff would be an absolute ice cold killer as an accompaniment. I can convince myself - probably because I want to believe - that I'm getting just a wee bit of Pilsner malt as my pallet clears but I think its wishful thinking. No idea how I will score this one.

Brewers Notes: For 2023, we resurrected and re-invigorated our 0 IBU recipe for IwanttoBU DIPA with the inclusion of Citra Cryo and Simcoe Cryo to the original hop bill of Citra, Simcoe, and El Dorado. The nose is greeted with notes of tropical fruit, citrus zest, and delicate pine. Flavors of mango juice and ripe pineapples spill onto the palate, complemented with a backsplash orange and grapefruit. The beer finishes delightfully smooth with medium body and low bitterness.

Can poured into a pretentious beer glass , looks like fresh squeezed orange juice, hazy , two finger d
Fizzy foam cap, sticky, spotty lacings

The aroma is orange citrus , tropical fruit and a faint whiff of pine

    Taste is mango citrus orange,

Mouthfeel is medium, has a quick fizziness, smooth, low bitterness, no bitterness , that is this beers best feature

    Good beer

Lost Forty Brewing Good Weather ( Cold IPA ), 5.2% ABV; 3.57 overall

Pours a bright & effervescent gold with one finger off eggshell colored head. Okay head retention & lacing

S: Bready, grassy, not much there

T: Follows the nose, pretty dry, some lime up front. More lime, breadyness, a little grainyness & mineral dryness as this beer warms up, Finishes with grassy bitterness, kind of dry & a little bit of soapy hops

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, decent balance

As a rule, I'm not about Cold IPAs, this is drinkable, enough, but not one I wish I purchased a sixer of, but I did

Equlibrium ∂C/∂t. According to the brewer, this is "...the most technologically advanced DIPA we’ve made to date. It utilizes new hardware in unique ways to bring you a beer that’s on the same level as SOTL and Adrestia. Introducing Mass Fluxes into a Control Volume leads to a change in concentration over a change in time or dC/dt, which allows for the construction of a predictive juice model."
OK, whatever. Let's pour the can (dated 3/21/23) into a pint glass and see what we think.
Pours a very hazy medium honey-gold color with a persistent off-white head. Great lacing! Initial impression is grapefruit, peach, mango, pear, and orange. Mouthfeel is very soft and juicy; finish fades to a lingering citrus sweetness.
I've always enjoyed Equlibrium's IPAs, and this is one of their best to date. And the can is pretty cool too.
