Well you drink more than I do and your doctor will probably tell you that you are drinking too much and are on a path to get the problems you are trying to avoid.

My first experience with Black Ops was also my first experience with an infected beer. This seems to be a recurring problem with that one - and a darn good reason for a drain pour.

This is precisely my thinking: alcohol isn't exactly healthy (separate thread for those who want to debate that  ), so why punish myself with something I really don't enjoy? If it's literally the only thing to which you have access and you want a buzz (say, a dive bar with limited selection), sure, maybe grin and bear it, but if I'm at home and I have access to, well, literally anything else, I'm not going to keep drinking something I don't enjoy.

    Zagacki.

Although I will caveat that I've had way more drain pours (still not many) than books I chose not to finish.

That's a fair point if you're at a dive bar, or drinking only to get buzzed or drunk. Granted, if I know I'm not going to enjoy the beer selection while out, I probably simply won't have beer. Nothing wrong with a sober night and a glass of water. Your point that people are often drinking only for the effect is well taken - but a nasty shot is much easier to take than 12 or more ounces of a nasty beer. Hell, if you're doing doubles, you grin and bear it once, for the effect of two beers. That's a lot easier of a sell than, "Hey, keep drinking that vomit-flavored beer for the next 30 minutes, and then do it again!"

If I'm at home, though, I'd rather simply reach for something better than keep punishing my palate with a mistake. In economics, that's called following bad money with good money, and it's something you're not supposed to do. :stuck_out_tongue:

And all of that is aside from the fact that here, on BeerAdvocate, where the motto is literally "Respect Beer," people are going to tend to want a solid, and therefore tasty, product. Just about everyone here is going to enjoy the effects of alcohol, but that doesn't mean they are drinking solely for that reason. Your argument is a bit disingenuous, probably unintentionally, when you introduce the concept that drinking alcohol will get you buzzed, but then suggest that anyone who doesn't want to drink bad beer doesn't want to get buzzed. Chances are, they'd just rather get buzzed while drinking something they actually enjoy.

As one other point of contention, one could very easily make your argument not about booze, but about food: "food will affect you the same regardless of whether it is good or bad," as in, it will correct your hunger. Do you continue to eat food that you find absolutely disgusting (and I don't mean merely disagreeable)? I mean, maybe; some people may do so out of purely economic reasons. I suspect most people will not, even if the food is entirely safe to consume.

None of that is remotely true ... but I am ensuring that what I pour, I enjoy.

Cave creek Chili Beer. I love beer. I love spicy. I don’t love them together. I got through two sips and dumped the rest.

I will occasionally drain pour. Mostly if it's a beer I don't particularly love and want to just move onto something else. Even still, I'll usually drink about half of it to make up my mind before dumping. It's pretty rare that I dump though, and sometimes the bad beers are fun to laugh at and figure out where it went wrong

My thought about Dave's Cave Creek and it being nasty is because of the clear glass bottles. ZAP! That beer was rarely ever good, entire pepper w stem rammed into the bottle, but I got lucky and had freshies back when it was a new thing in the 1980's...It became a shelf piece for many retailers. Cheap tasting beer (kinda Mexican lager) and random heat. There are much better chili pepper beers and fruit & field brews today it's amazing. Cheers!

Both my current and previous docs have said there is nothing wrong with the amount I drink and that I am in great health. What's next in your attempt to pick a fight with me? Are you going to tell me my doctors are quacks and didn't go to medical school?

Read this article https://www.usnews.com/news/health-..., March 31, 2023 (,of heart disease and death.

It says "7 standard drinks or more a week — Your risk of heart disease or stroke increases significantly at this level." Did you not say that you have 10 a week? At one point it was thought that one or two a day is actually good for you, but recent studies say that is wrong. This was something I had heard on the news maybe in the past month so that is why I said what I said and your next doctor's visit may be giving you different advice. This is just one article so are you saying you know more than these people? What qualifies you to say that they are wrong?

I definitely do not know more than the folks who did that research. But those researchers don't know as much about me as my current and former PCPs. Point is, the data in those studies are aggregate numbers. They are taking into account some control variable, I am sure, but they still don't know as much about my individual health as my current and former PCPs. My current and former PCPs know my diet, exercise routine, health history, and family health history, and both agree that staying under ten drinks per week and under four drinks on any given night is perfectly fine.

I'm still puzzled as to why you take issue with me pouring out beers that I'm not not into instead of just choking them down. Alcohol is poison. Period. Why would I drink poison if I'm not really enjoying it? Moreover, why is it so difficult for you to respect this perspective? I am not taking issue with you never drain pouring a beer, why are you taking issue with me doing it? Again, I am puzzled.

A while ago there were a ton of threads on here about drain pours, and it seemed like a ton of people not only were dumping half their beers, but were proud of it.
I'll say there have been very few times that I;ve dumped a beer - aside from infections and such. One in particular was a half a bomber of Soutern Tier Creme Brulee stout - way too sweet, and I couldn't even consider capping it to put in my fridge for the following day.
The only others I've dumped are old homebrew that was oxidised, possibly buggy, etc.

Only distinct drain pours of mine I remember is Cave Creek Chile beer and DFH Festina Peche (was a newbie at the time, it tasted like bile to me, now I consider it quite tame compared to other sours). Bottom line, craft beer is expensive. I'll try and just work through the beer vs pouring it out.

I’m the opposite. Even a mediocre beer takes only 30 minutes to drink—a lousy book takes days or weeks to finish, depending on your pace. And there’s absolutely nothing quite like drinking a shitty beer while reading a terrible book.

That's entirely true, I'm just an old-school book nerd, and it takes a lot to get me to quit a book. But it has happened before.
