Hey, I’m Dave. My favorite beer as a youngster was Stroh’s; growing up in WV it was “near beer”. Many AALs later I started to dabble in home brewing in the early 2000s, and fell into the rabbit hole of craft beer, and keeping a beer log. Still log my beers to this day.

I retired the end of January 2015 and one of the first things I did was to join this site. It’s been a great ride here.

Before COVID the wife and I traveled a lot, and I have had the good fortune of visiting breweries in this country, and a few abroad. I plan on taking our RV from where we live in SW FL to the Rockies this May/June, and will hit a few breweries along the way as well as meet up with some BA friends. Looking forward to my next beer adventures.

I like most styles of beer, and enjoy BA Stouts and IPAs the most frequently. I’ll close by saying “Thank You” to Todd for maintaining such a welcoming and vibrant site, and a shout out to the mods and everyone else who contributes and participates.

    Cheers y’all!

"Better Late Than Never" is acceptable when you're retired. It's nice to know more about you and your busy level of beer advocacy. Keep it going.

    Cheers to you too!

Nice introduction Dave! You have one day seniority on me here.

Seems like you are settling into your new condo nicely, though do miss your pictures from your previous condo near the gulf and Tropicana Dome.

Looking forward to seeing you again next month! Need to find out the final roster soon so I bring up enough beer.

Also, congratulations on your prestigious Beer Advocate March Beer Madness Championship! You made that tournament your bitch! :sunglasses:

    Cheers!

Thanks Jason! I have noticed that you and I joined BA practically the same day. The tournament was lots of fun and you did a terrific job organizing and running it. I look forward to next year!

Our meet up in May is going to be a blast, seeing old friends, meeting new ones, and of course drinking great beer.

    Cheers!

Thanks! The stove clock is a feature I’ve had in the past, and I’m pleased to utilize the one I have now…you know what they say, “It’s beer 30 somewhere!” Cheers!

West Virginia was, along with a number of other US states, a "3.2" state, which limited the alcohol content of beer to less than 3.2 alcohol by weight - in some cases, the 3.2 beer was sold only by certain licensed retailers or age groups. . (3.2 ABW equals about 4% ABV.)

Interestingly, unlike many of the others where the limit was in effect since Repeal, WV did allow beer with an alcohol content of up to 5% ABW between 1935 and 1945.

...but 3.2 ABW was not "near beer", better known these days as "Non-alcoholic" beer (the legal definitions are above).

For Stroh, according to stats from the state of Ohio (also a 3.2 state for certain retail licenses) in the late 1970s, the so-called "high-test" Stroh's Beer was found to be 3.87% ABW (~4.9 ABV) while the 3.2 Stroh's was 3.06% ABW (~3.9 ABV).

Yeah, well I've seen others call 3.2 "near beer" in the past (maybe even here on the BA forums). I mean, I never lived or visited a 3.2-only state (I went to MN and CO, but I knew the deal about where to buy the so-called "Full Strength" beer) but I'd imagine it was still better than "no more than 0.5% ABV" NA stuff.

My favorite aspect was Coors used to (maybe still does) actually make two different Coors Light beers. I mean, for a difference of 0.1% - why bother?
Of course, they were likely brewing High Gravity Coors Light, so they just had to keep the carbonated water faucet open a bit longer for the 3.2 version.
