Just realized one thing: The percentages do not reflect total percentage of all beer ratings/reviews in that month -- it's the percentage amongst only those 10 styles

Realized another thing: Forgot the link to the style groupings I mentioned

According to tracking data, my first strike has landed. Shipping more by this weekend, and in multiple directions. Pretty busy with work tomorrow, but I'll make it work. :grinning:

Paging @ovaltine for confirmation of a successful softening strike.

So @NorsemanOne kindly asked what kind of local food items I would like. I said I liked cookies but wanted something from Utah.
    So he sent cookies:

Each one of those cookies is about 4” in diameter and 1/2” thick. I may get a serious sugar headache soon.
    Thanks Jonathan!

It's interesting that you can actually see a very noticeable pattern of increasing hopheadedness from the very beginning, until it roughly flattened out maybe 2019-2021, and seems to be falling somewhat since then. Stouts seem to have had a slower growth, though it seems to be continuing to grow. But both curves are pretty noisy.

Interesting but unsurprising. While IPAs have dominated the craft beer obsession for a while now, the trend in breweries releasing more and more IPAs that are single-hop iterations of their other beers has only accelerated.

Look at our obvious example, Tree House. Every core beer (Julius, Haze, Green) has a number of iterations. I'll just use Green. Green, Very Green, Gggreennn, Vvvery Greennn, and I'm sure there are others. Julius has the same thing, but also with exclamation mark versions, an Emperor version, and more.

Then there are the "(Insert hop varietal here!) Double Dry Hopped" takes on just about everything.

You simply don't see that with other styles (to a lesser extent, perhaps, fruited sours). There's no "Tomahawk Double Dry Hopped Russian Imperial Stout" that's different from the single dry hopped version, the Citra dry hopped version, the Citra double dry hopped version ... I mean, yeah.

We make fun of this trend, but when you're tallying the number of reviews, the inevitable result is that IPAs will simply dominate.

Interesting compounding effect. "We like new IPAs!" results in more new IPAs, results in more new IPA entries in BA, but not necessarily a higher proportion of IPA drinking.

I don't have a way to get access about new beers added to the database. But I bet it would 100% support the "more new IPAs than new <anything else>" theory

That mirrors my own personal consumption. I almost never drink IPAs anymore unless they're sent to me.

Im sure @Todd would confirm this.

    Haul hint

    4.54/5 rDev +1.8%
    look: 4.75 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5
Brewers notes: (Triple IPA, 9.4% ABV, 16oz)

The Biggest One is a triple IPA brewed and dry-hopped with a preposterous amount of hops. It tastes like the nectar of freshly pressed oranges, mixed tropical fruit, and juicy summer stone fruit with a massive and coating mouthfeel. It's a Tree House hoppy beer gluttony in the best way possible.

Can purchased at tree house Tewksbury , canned 3.16 , opened 4.13 poured into a prentetious beer glass

    “ welcome baby maple”’

Hazy , syrupy dark hazy orange juice , capped my a dense creamy two finger off white foam cap, great retention , thick cloaking lacings , spotty lacings after some sips , settles to a ring

Aroma is orange citrus, mango, tropical fruits , bubble gum , peach

Taste is orange citrus, mango tropical fruits , bubble gum

Velvety smooth , creamy, slight sweetness , 9.4% Abv is very well hidden

    Very good beer , recommended

Based on a quick visual inspection, 26 of the last 100 beers added to the database have been IPA of one variety or another (ignoring one "low alcohol" IPA), and I think 13 have been stouts of one variety or another

I think for something like this, you're going to want:

    a) a sample size of at least 1000;

    b) beers not just by most recently added, but with enough time for reviews.

The first point is fairly obvious. The second is fairly subtle, but related to the first.

Let's say I discover a new brewery (Brewery X) with few entries on BA. That's pretty common. They do German lagers; sweet! So I add 12 new beers to BA, all German lagers.

But over the next three months, they are reviewed by, well, only me - and not even all of them.

On the flip side, over the next three months, Brewery Y adds three new IPAs, which are reviewed by a handful of people.

In terms of "recently added," Brewery X dominates the chart over Brewery Y, but that speaks very little to how many beers of each style are being reviewed, or even when the beers were released. To the latter point, when Tree House adds a beer, it doesn't take long to make it into the BA database; when my local breweries release a new beer, if I don't add it, it likely doesn't get added at all - or takes months after release.

In other words, there are two very big distinctions not made clear by that list: "recently added" versus "recently released," and "recently added" versus "actually reviewed by N number of people.

The recently added list is a decent start, but I'd argue the impact of adding 26 IPAs to the list is greater than 26% of the number of new reviews.

This portion of your excellent post intrigues me - does anyone in this esteemed group of beer nerds add beers that they don’t drink/review?

If you see me adding a beer, then you know I’m literally drinking that beer at that point in time. I can’t imagine adding a beer that I’m not looking at over the top of a glass, but I’m old school in that regard. Where does everyone else fall on this?
