Omg my AP Calculus teacher was a Mr. Nelson - he used to give me shit for coming into class stoned after lunch. Still got a A though.

My early computering days fall somewhere between you and Roguer - I used WordPerfect but I only knew of Lotus 1-2-3, never actually used it. I had the VIC20 then Commodore 64/128, but went from there to an Amiga and then a Mac because I was taking programming classes in junior high at UC Berkeley and they were using Macs at that time (late 80's). I am severely limited in my DOS skills but I was very familiar with GUI programming when most folks were still fumbling around with text based crap.

For beer related things, I'm absolutely not touching BA on my phone. I post here on my PC, and often use a notepad app to actually compose my longer posts because fuck losing a multi-paragraph post due to the archaic infrastructure here. Also have built and helped run/admin multiple forums across a range of subjects, so I feel more at home here than on something like Instagram/FB but god is it clunkier than it needs to be. Untappd is incredibly fast on my phone, photos are seamlessly integrated, and it does fun things like tell me who has Pliny the Younger on tap nearby so I don't have to go stand in line at the brewery or pay attention to social media to try it.

Gosh, I remember Lotus 1-2-3, though, it was in college, and I know I just barely scratched the surface on it. I, maybe, used 1% of what it was designed for, but it was all I needed in school.

Later on, I did design a spread sheet for when I was in the restaurant business to close out the daily sales. I didn't have any clue of the formulas, or know how to program them, but I knew how to copy and paste to create it in Excel/Open Office. It took a while for me to do it, and probably way too long, but I did - somehow.

    @ovaltine

Whoa whoa whoa - I loved WordPerfect, and consider it superior to MS Word to this day! Never used Lotus, so I can't speak to it.

I really do feel that some of my preference for PC here is the design and architecture that Christine mentions. BA is simply designed more for PC, unlike Untappd - and that's not a criticism. They have different roles in our advocacy.

How about this example: Modern Times has a beer called Modem Tones (the name actually originated from a typo here on BA). It's a pastry stout, and a specific base they use. They then age it in a variety of barrels (usually bourbon but not always) and sometimes add an assortment of adjuncts. According to Untappd, there's 75 variants of Modem Tones. I've had just 36 of them.

Oh yeah, Modern Times is a great example of a brewery that does a ton of variants on one stout. Like, so damn many, to the point of different origin vanilla beans.

They're not unique in that, but they are part of a small subset. I'd wager that most of us could name at least a half dozen, if not many more, breweries that do the same with IPA variants. Heck, I suspect I could throw out two dozen off the top of my head, without hardship.

There are probably production reasons (i.e. costs) why stouts aren't as suspect to this "variation creep" as IPAs, along with the inherent ambivalence toward changing out hop varietals in terms of stouts, as opposed to IPAs. For all the variety in stouts here and there, the variety in IPAs seems, anecdotally at least, to be vastly greater.

I am amazed that I'm apparently the only BA user amongst us using my phone. That literally astounds me.

As for Untappd, I'm not a fan at any level. I literally go there maybe a half dozen times a year.

    Apparently I'm an outlier.

I have become a bigger UT user, but it's a lot due to work. Being in the industry - on the retail level - letting a customer know what I think about a beer is a lot easier on UT due to the size limitations on a review.

First can from the official first box haul from @snaotheus ! A very lager centric box, that I hope to do some sharing with y'all over the next 72 hours of putting beer in my belly!
Cant wait to see what comes next!

Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my .5L dimple mug. Date stamp is 3/07/2023. The beer pour a bright clear chestnut color with a fluffy beige colored head of 1cm . This foam fades to nothing by halfway through the sampling. No lattice on my glass.
Aroma is nutty and wheat bread with a little caramel. Hints of herbal tea hops create some balance, but the nose is definitely more malt forward.
First sip reveals a light crisp textured body with fine tingly carbonation. Beer drinks very easy on physical traits.
Flavor is again some wheat bread and caramel with a bit of toasted grain note here and less of the nutty character. I also get a slight bitterness and herbal tea note again that balances more here and dries out my palate after each sip.
Never any hint of the ABV on this very drinkable malty lager. Quite nice and glad to have had the opportunity to drink this one.

Chalk another young (Millennial here) one up for using the computer. I use BA on my phone but never review a beer on there if I can help it - the only time I do it is when I am out and want to add a short review.

I can review a beer on here on my phone, I did so earlier today at Pantown Brewing, and added to the database. It's just fewer steps to do so on my computer.

If I am able to visit my friends in Montana this summer, and I found out something today that might prevent it, it will be on my phone, since my computer will be back home in central MN.

    Lies!

I use BA on my phone about 90% of the time. Pictures are a bit of a pain in the ass, and I don't always get notifications/alerts, but it's not enough to convince me to go over to the laptop

2nd beer from the lager box from @snaotheus thank you for the nice range of beers in this salvo!
Ill cross post this in the what NW beer are you drinking thread also. this is Wayfinder Brewing from Portland Oregon and their Luna Muerta Vienna Lager. 5.3% ABV

Haul hint for my target: This beer is NOT in your box(es) that I shipped today!

    onto my review:[IMG]

Pouring a cellar temp 16 oz can into my .5L dimple mug. Date stamp is 1/27/23. A soft fluffy, pillowy eggshell white head foams up about 3 cm and fades to a wispy surface covering after a few minutes. Very scattered lattice when I swirl the mug.
Beer pours a clear copper color with a few lazy streams of carbonation rising to the surface.
Aroma is some toasted grains and dark bread and only a little caramel. I do get a bit of an herbal hop note buried in the background. No hint of any ABV here.
First sip reveals a light to medium body with smooth texture and very fine and prickly carbonation. The carbonation foams up a lot in my mouth if I swirl the beer.
Flavor is similar to the nose advertisements. I get some toasted grain and multigrain bread not very sweet malts here. I do get a little lemon, which I often find in amberish lagers, and then the beer rolls to a slight bitter herbal tea bite. this bite also dries out my palate significantly. A well balanced lager with interesting flavors that keep me enjoying the beer until my mug is empty. nice beer!

much prefer laptop to my phone for reviewing beers.
Can do beer pics in forums with my phone if needed and have done a review or two, but mostly its me and the laptop (and my yellow chair) with a beer at the table.

Forget about doing gifs on my phone...so many broken image links I wont be trying that anymore.

I used to bring a small flip pad notebook and take notes at bars and breweries and then transcribe em into BA. Now I hardly ever go to a bar and if Im at a brewery I mostly just drink the beer and chat with who is around.

Anyway, who else is drinkin beers from a haul box tonight besides me and @WunderLlama ?
