It's now 11 miles away at a couple dozen locations within 50 miles. For some reason SN distribution always works this way. We become encircled by stores in every direction before distribution finally fills in the circle. I will be patient. I will drive up to 5 miles to get it.

Nope. Oberon has been on the shelves for a few weeks now and despite being a "summer" wheat ale there hasn't been a peep about it being released "too early".

Probably because "Oberon Day" has been established for a long time.

But yeah, even at 80° in northern Illinois today, I still think it's too early (44° predicted for Monday).

That said, I still bought a six-pack 'cause it's one of my all-time favorites.

Yeah, the Oberon release is a part of culture by beer release standards. It's associated with summer, but also with the transition from winter to spring. "Oberon Day" is timed with the start of baseball season, has received a government proclamation, and is so celebrated that midnight tappings get advertised.

I can still remember my first Oberon, on draft at the Maproom in Chicago at a bachelor party -- pub crawl for an old friend. Sometime in May of 2002.

I was recovering from the loss of a good friend and feeling lost about losing another party-friend through marriage (I was single at the time).

I took a chance because everyone said this beer was so good -- I've always bought (at least) one six-pack every year since.

I doubt the average person who drinks this beer or is wont to complain (or not complain) about seasonal creep knows anything about this. Cool stuff though. I've never heard of this before.

Big, BIG seller in Illinois, too.

When Bell's had stopped distributing in Ill for a while, I went to a beer fest in Wisconsin -- Larry was pouring at the Bell's table.

He looked at my White Sox cap and said, "I bet I know what you want."

    Best Oberon ever.

@zid first place that popped up on the beer finder* had 12 packs. $18.99, canned 3/2923 (I almost didn’t add the “23”, but sadly in this day and age there could have been two year old Summerfest kicking around).

*I used the “other” Sierra Nevada beer finder.

Got a 12 pack of cans at Wegmans yesterday. The wife has been very into lagers lately and I always enjoy them. Very happy this one came back.

Don't forget they (sadly) changed the color of the label.

When you do crack open the pack, please let us know if you notice the change in recipe (i.e., different hop varieties used).

    Cheers!

It's impossible to know how long this stuff will be available in any given area. I remember the last summer this was available it disappeared fairly quickly around me. On the other hand I know of a few places that still have Celebration (refrigerated). I must admit I have been tempted a time or two.

I feel like that would be pretty much impossible but there are some pretty talented BAs here so who knows.
