An IPA at nearly 12% has to be super sweet, doesn’t it? Throw in the fact that it’s Lagunitas, and there is no doubt. That said, I like it. I’ve always liked how the Lagunitas hop bills marry with their sweet malt profiles. Sucks, Hop Stoopid, Lag IPA…I really like/liked all of them, especially peak Sucks. Waldos’ scratches an itch, although it’s an itch that I don’t always have.

That's why Pliny the younger is so revered. It's nice and dry.

But yeah, sweet and a bit syrupy is totally part of the lagunitas flavor profile.

    Well....

If the brewery chose to use a lot of simple sugars as part of the fermentables that 12% beer would not be super sweet. But if they chose to just use malts/grains then the 12% beer may indeed be super sweet.

    Cheers!

I had the new Waldo’s while at a restaurant. I don’t review beers that I drink in a social setting because I think it is rude to take notes while everyone is focused on social interaction, but I recall liking it quite a bit

I saw it at TJs yesterday but didn't even pick up a single. I had it last year and Waldo's, just like SN Hoptimum, is an every few years purchase. They're just too boozy and sweet but sometimes you just want to scratch that itch.

It's pretty hard to dislike peak Sucks. Just saying.... :beers: I admit to being nostalgic for Hop Stoopid. I haven't had that in years and years.

The best hoppy beers lagunitas ever made in my opinion, and perhaps not surprising they are their least sweet offerings.

Aunt Sally's Sour Mash Rye was a good one too

Best hoppy beer Lagunitas ever made in my opinion was the first couple of batches of Born Yesterday. Sucks would be my next choice.

To be honest, I'm more nostalgic for their malty offerings, stout, cappucchino stout, Lucky 13, Hairy Eyeball and the list goes on.

I was pleasantly surprised with Waldos this year. I had it on draft about 5 years ago and almost couldn't finish it. It was really good this year. Bottled in early March, I figured it may be on it's way out. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

For a brewery that sold out (I'm not disrespecting it) the quality has remained pretty close to what it used to.

Glad it is back in sixers. If they could just find time to bring back OG Sucks and Cappuccino Stout (bombers baby but would welcome 4/6-pk offering), that would be great.

Can’t find by me to even have an opinion. Seem to hear a lot of that. Much hype and not as much distribution? Last few years has been stellar. Even their go to beer finder Total Wine is out. Closest is 2 hours from me. Heard Chicago had a bad batch so less to go around? Got me….I’m sad.

Waldos sucks the past 4-5 years, try Sierra Nevada hoptimum for the same price , 11.99 a sixer of triple ipa and it’s hoppier more dry and crisp, less sweet

Waldo and Sucks are actually two different beers.

I think Waldo’s is going for a different flavor profile (dank, malty) than Hoptimum (piney, drier (relatively speaking)), and age definitely plays a role as well — if you’re drinking Waldo’s at this point in the year, it’s definitely not fresh, and I could see Hoptimum’s flavor profile holding up a bit better over time.

YMMV I suppose, but as a consumer I won’t be one to complain that we have TWO affordable and widely distributed TIPAs available.

This year's Hoptimum is out in the wild. I think I saw it on Total Wine's website but I'm confident I know where I can find some in a 'fridge. I haven't had it in a few years. Maybe this year is the time. Actually I wish I had the option to buy one or two bottles to be honest.

Absolutely my feeling with these kind of beers. I'm not going to drink 6 before even the better made and packaged ones start to lose what balance they had
