First up today for me is this great imperial stout with coconut from @Highbrow. This is Blammo from Cellarmaker. Love the label art!

Pours a deep, thick, dark brown/black with a decent head that slowly dissipates to thin ring. No lacing to speak of.

The nose is a delightful blend of milk chocolate and coconut. There is some roasted grain as well and a difficult to place slightly spicy note too.

Taste is similarly coconut and sweet milk chocolate primarily. The coconut has a toasted character. The spice on the nose is not present on the tongue.

The body is thick and full. Slightly oily. Not syrupy. Very good.

This is a top tier coconut stout that I’d gladly have again and am thankful to have tried. Thanks Titus!

Bottled my 2nd batch of home brewed beer and thought I'd celebrate, I chose from the beer fridge Old Irving's Peace Treaty, an Imperial Stout brewed in collaboration with Forbidden Roots, both from Chicago.

Thick, oily looking black pour, small khaki head, zip in the lacing department. Snot factory says peanut shells and chocolate as do the taste buds. Thick'n chewy texture. Other than the taste and smell, this would have been pretty good. Label says brewed and canned by Old Irving in collaboration with Forbidden Root.

...being old, I looked up the word "collaboration", much to my surprise it didn't include "screwed up by".....

Packaged on 4/10/23 - enjoyed on 4/22/23 - poured from a 12oz can into my Radeberger pokal.

Nearly clear, very pale lemon chiffon liquid with an active, even finger of bubbles up top. Mediocre retention; faintly soapy lacing.

Faint floral/citrus in the nose as well as clean lager notes.

Crisp palate entry with a low but distinct jasmine rice note and hints of marmalade, honeydew, and white grapes. Moderate bitterness, faintly fruity/earthy, but clean. Very faintly tart ("yuzu" indeed!), dry, refreshing finish.

Light bodied with gentle carbonation and restrained alcohol.

More than the sum of its parts, and quite enjoyable with lunch on a hot day, but I do prefer the toasted/puffed rice flavors on offer from something like Harland's rice lager.

Take me out to the ball game...this ones for you @FBarber

I didn't plan to have a new beer on this fun filled today because we were too damn busy, that is until my father in law slapped the beer below into my hand...Went to the Phillies game with the kids, our in laws and my brother in laws family also met us there; such an amazingly fun experience. It was our youngest's first and our oldest's second, but first that he will remember. I quickly jotted down my thoughts on this beer as I drank it; I think this beer's enjoyment was enhanced by how it came to me and just the great feelings all of us had.

Right before said beer was slapped into my hand…too much fun…

    Beer…

    Look…NA

Nice pop to the nose; cracker and grain first and foremost, touch a bright and light honey, mild yellow citrus; as it warms the sweetness becomes more dominant, maybe even too much so.

Taste is cracker like, sweet, little grassy, lemony citrus; the combination of sweet and lemon is refreshing and well balanced; sweetness is appropriate and not over the top when at proper temperature.

Light body; quite crisp and bright; a medium nicely placed bitterness on the finish, light sweetness that finishes mostly dry but it does linger a little on the palette.

This beer was quite tasty, would gladly revisit in the future if I was willing to pay stadium prices. Thanks Opa for the surprise beer!!

    ----------------

Now we anxiously watch game 3 around 7 o'clock while I catch up during intermission...cheers everyone and go leafs go…

Honestly there’s not much to be said, I’m a convert. This is an incredible pint at a great price (I paid 16.99 for the 12er).

Great clarity. Sudsy head. Sweet earthy nose with sharp carbonation on the palate.

Full bodied. Malt meets earthy hops. The Czech liveliness and spicy, peppery body is quite something.

Finish is earthy and clean. Begs for another sip.

Aroma coconut, mango, vanilla, peach, and guava. Unusual but pleasant. 4.5

Mouthfeel is pretty big, soft carbonation, not dry or sticky, and at 8.2% it goes down very easy once you get used to it. 4.5

Overall this a really interesting beer and for me it worked very well. I would give it a shot. 4.5 I still have plenty more.

Hello, NBW friends. My beers (and glassware) tonight are tied to NBW BIFers, with a special nod on beer #2 to @cavedave.

When I first started to participate in this thread back in 2015, Dave and Marie (utopiajane) were running things, and to be honest, I was a bit intimidated because it was apparent that the group that participated in this thread was tight and (from what I discerned) they took this beer review thingie very seriously and my beer review skills were (and still are) ….. rudimentary.

They couldn’t have been more accepting of the newbie that I was, and today after 8 years, this is still my favorite recurring thread on the site. That’s a direct credit to Dave and the graciousness which he led this thread with all those years ago.

My first beer is from my friend @Roguer and is from the porch smashing he perpetrated on me courtesy of NBS BIF #17. When he strikes, he strikes bigly. What a magnificent beer nerd he is.

PS: the glassware is courtesy of @beerloserLI and a long ago NBS BIFer. It’s a favorite of mine for multiple beer styles.

    Now how about a beer?

Pours a hazy, almost turbid peach color with a creamy white head that I immediately associate with Tree House hop bombs. Beautiful beer. The nose is dank and features peaches, guava, pineapple, and tangerine. No sign of the coconut.

This drinks REALLY juicy, with ripe peaches, the guava, some pineapple, a bit of tangy, and maybe a smidge of coconut. It’s like a tropical juice box for grownups - and no site of alcohol in this 8% ABV beer. That’s almost felonious.

The mouthfeel is a bit watery, but not distractingly so. This is an easy drinking juice bomb that should come with a warning label, because it could definitely smack you if you plowed through two or three pints, which would be very easy to do given the drinkability.

Tawny, dirty brown body, opaque in the glass; thin, patchy, light khaki colored head. Faint aroma; light roasted grains; a smidgen of whiskey. Strange taste; raisins and red wine; no significant malt or whiskey flavors. Medium-heavy body; fairly smooth; slightly tart; rather astringent as the beer opens up.

A little sour tasting overall and nothing like a wee heavy let alone with wheated whiskey barrel connotations. The bottle label notes of chocolate covered cherries in the aroma (!?) but not in the taste. For taste, they trumpet malted milk balls and crème brûlée with the mouthfeel being silky. Sorry, there is none of this in the beer I'm drinking. I don't know what happened, but this beer doesn't strike me as any kind of wee heavy. It has more of a thin, watery aspect with strong notes of red wine or sherry barrel aging.

    One month old.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 5/4 inch slightly off-white head over a hazy golden body with sticky lacing.

Nose of citrus, tropical fruit, and sweet citrus with a hint of pine.

Taste follows nose very closely with flavors almost off the Richter!
Finish is orange peel and slight pine bitterness.

Nice feel with carbonation above average for the style.

Overall, glad to have finally tried this as it just reached distribution status here in Vermont!

Alus Darbnīca Labietis - Pelašķu Velns

Imperial Dark Ale with Citra hops, yarrow and St. John's wort, from Latvia (9.9%).

Pours a deep, dark mahogany coloration with a ruby red sheen when held up to the light and a medium, creamy, lasting head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, chocolate and lighter coffee and licorice, with some herbal accents coming through as well.

Taste is a great balance of roasted, caramel malt, chocolate, coffee and lighter peppery spice, dark fruit, with notes of fig and raisin, as well as hints of citrus zest, licorice, tobacco and herbal notes reminiscent of rosemary and bog myrtle. Finishes bittersweet, with some chocolate, peppery spice, licorice and herbal accents lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a very interesting and well-balanced brew with a great harmony of sweet, roasted and bitter, as well as spicy, herbal and slightly fruity accents. The herbal additions certainly come though noticeably, lending a very different character to this beer and fitting in well with the peppery spice and licorice, perhaps adding to it, being reminiscent of bog myrtle, which has a certain anise note to me. The Citra hops also add a subtle hint of lemon peel, which somehow fits in nicely here.

Overall, this makes for a very unique drinking experience that feels rich, well-balanced and full of character.

    Varietal Casita Lager
16-ounce can purchased at ABV in Hillsboro, OR. Date stamp reads "BB 10/2023". Poured in a nonic half-pint.

(Note: The label says this has an ABV of 4.5%, as opposed to the 5.5% listed in the beer's BA profile.)

    Look:
Body is a slightly hazy pale straw color. Head is snowy white and thin, and quickly shrinks to an uneven skin with a tenacious ring at the edge of the glass. Leaves some lacing behind.

    Smell:
Cereal-like, slightly sweet malt. Hint of sulfur. Light hit of grassy hops in the finish.

    Taste:
Starts with a real nice toasted malt flavor. Grainy and somewhat cracker-ish through the middle. Not too sweet. Finishes with more bitterness than I was expecting. Clean and refreshing.

Feel: Light-bodied with brisk carbonation. Crisp finish.

    Overall:
Sometimes you just want a beer-flavored beer, and you could do a lot worse than this one. Clean, well-made, no off-flavors. The toasty malt flavors and mild hoppy finish lift this one up a notch. I'm glad I tried it.

Hoppin' Frog - Sour Raspberry Dark Berliner

16oz can served in a pair of WABL sample glasses. Can appears to be dated "best by" October 06, 2025. Got it from @Ozzylizard in NBS BIF #17.

Pours a murky brown with a slight reddish-amber tint. Some carbonation on the pour, no head at rest. There is a tiny amount of carbonation. Smell is definitely berry / fruity, tart -- not terribly intense.

Taste is raspberry...jam (my mind went through juice then syrup to jam to puree and then back to jam during the ellipsis). It's tart, but more in an unsweetened fruit way than an acidic beer way. I get a tiny hint of the kettle sour flavor, but it's pretty well overpowered by the raspberry flavor.

Mouthfeel is thick and kind of still, a little bit of what I'll call sludge (not meaning it in a negative way). Overall...generally I'm not a fan of kettle sours, but Mr. Lizard has taken it upon himself to try to prove me wrong, and he did a pretty good job here. It reminds me a bit of the "Twice the Daily Serving" beers from Trillium that I've tried via @WunderLlama in previous iterations of the same BIF, which I also liked.

I rarely post in this thread, but felt maybe a contribution can help someone decide on trying this new Odell beer. Since I found Odell's Mountain Standard to be a good hazy IPA, I had to try the Imperial version.

Odell Mountain Standard Imperial Hazy IPA. 9% abv single with a 7/30/23 exp date

    L- 3.75
Orange hazy liquid at about 70% transparency with a small, floppy off white cap.

    N-3.75
Orange and Apricot dominate the nose, a touch of yeast funk and hop aroma.

    T-3.25
Blood orange, some grapefruit and a touch of apricot with a powdery saccharine floral sweetness at first. Reminds me of a dry hop addition similar to Sierra’s Powder Day IPA. Then a fair amount of nondescript hop and alcohol bitterness and dryness keeping things in check.

    M-3.25
Mouthfeel is medium in body with a touch of glycerin slickness acting as a counterpoint to the dry hop and alcohol finish. The alcohol is not hidden and is on the verge of being a bit too aggressive. Longer term aftertaste is quite mouth drying.

    O-3.25
Quite a departure from my well liked Mountain Standard IPA. Less fresh and juicy with less identifiable hop character. Not as refined and with less hop character than Myrcenary. Kind of like some of the Voodoo hazy strong IPAs, with less varied NE fruit components. I’ve got 2 more cans and am not sure I will be consuming them any time soon. Maybe it will grow on me the next time.

Taste follows big bready biscuit start, caramel, grass, and brown sugar. 4

Mouthfeel is above average, not sticky or dry, a good amount of carbonation, and at 8.8% it is malty, a tad sweet, but very easy sipping. 4.25
