I can understand Steveh's hesitancy based on the description of the Diamant hop's flavors.

However, if Mr. Carey is to be believed (based on their podcast), and the Pils is very, very similar to last year's brewery-only 22 Pils, then those flavors are highly unlikely to be prominent or noticeable in this beer.

At this point we're all speculating, so the only way to find out is to buy and see.

    Just trying to
Me 2. That’s kind of why I wanted to talk people off the ledge. Sure it’s a newer hop, but it’s still a noble hop, blended with 4 classic noble hops by Dan Carey. This isn’t a risky purchase. And Diamant certainly won’t be offensive. It’s not like Carey added mosaic to the recipe. This will taste similar to Pils 22, which seemingly was a test run for the beer that has become New Glarus Pilsner. Do we think Dan Carey’s pilsner is going to suck, or be strange? Of course not

a quick look at the reviews, and nobody mentioned berries. One guy said grapefruit and suggested it might be overly hoppy. The others mentioned all the classic notes we expect from pilsner, which I how I remember the beer

    Agreed.

I bought a case of 22 Pils, and had it on tap in New Glarus, and I, like you, only remember classic pilsner flavors, rather than any hints of orange or sweet berries.

I have a hard time thinking that Dan would put all of this effort into his 'perfect' pils and have it contain out-of-place citrus in berries hop flavors.

Well, since I think his Bohemian Pils was spot-on and he hasn't brewed it since 2008, who really knows what he's thinking?

But as always, I reserve judgment for after I've tried it myself. Doesn't mean I don't take note of ingredients.

But as to these new hops being considered true noble hops? I don't know -- but yeah, call me steadfast traditional. Citrus and berries aren't characters I equate with noble hops.

Can't disagree with either of these points. Maybe some wishful thinking on my part?

I took a peek on Untappd for some initial reviews. There are several mentions of citrus :flushed::slight_smile:

Greetings from the West Coast! Our daughter, who lives in the Twin Cities and has inherited from us a love of NG beer, shipped us a couple of 4-packs of the 30th Anniversary Quadruple.

We have not gotten into it yet, but look forward to it. Just interested in your comments & observations. Ratings so far are favorable.

By the way, enjoyed the discussion on Dan's quest for the perfect Pilsner. Living halfway between Seattle and Portland, this is ground-zero for the craft beer world. We have highly-skilled lager brewers here, but in a head-to-head contest, my money would still be on Dan.

I had a pils today. I didn't really do a "review drink," and I only had the one, so don't ask for detailed tasting notes. But I will say that I liked it, and yes it does have a little bit of a "bright" fruity note, and if you squint just right you might say it tastes a little citrus-y. However if I had not read this thread, I'm not sure I would have thought of grapefruit or orange

Is this available in stores? How did I miss this? Berliner Apfel, the World's Greatest Pilsner®️ (haven't had it yet), and a quad? New Glarus is stacking the roster right now.

A friend poured me a few ounces last night. Steve, I think you concerns were valid. Most won’t; but for someone as perceptive as you, I’m certain you will notice the diamant berry thing

it’s a beautiful pils, with a pinch of modernized hop character. I’ll drink lots of this. It is beautifully constructed, just not totally old school

side note - Art History’s Bella Strada uses a hefty does of Diamant. Had a pint of that on
Sunday evening. Much more pronounced in the Italian pilsner than the NG pilsner but I easily found the common thread between the two beers

    Per NGB Instagram,
"The 2nd R&D release of the year is here! Weizen Eisbock is a bottle-fermented behemoth coming in at 12% ABV and is meant to be enjoyed today at cellar temp. Expect this big beer to be luxurious and sweet and pack bold hints of clove. Weizen Eisbock is only available at the brewery in New Glarus and is of limited quantity. Cheers!"

Had my first one last night and 1,000,000% agree that was a fantastic beer. Bought a 6er and will hold the rest for warm summer days because that will be fantastic to sip on that on a warm evening. I did not detect any fruit/berry tones just some good pilsner character.

I was pretty pissed the last pils wasn't for sale at the depot when I was at NG last year, so I'm pretty pumped to pick this one up. Perfect time for this beer to be releasing!
