    Ahoy there, New Beer Weekenders!

Strap in for more of the whacky adventures of AzfromOz as he partakes of a bowl alongside a new herbed beer. Not sure Garret Oliver would approve of his beer matching, but then who made him the beer-matching police?

Anyway, this is The Place Beyond the Pines by Working Title Brewing Co., from up in Brisbane in sunny, beautiful Queensland, and which found its way to me via The One subscription pack from Carwyn Cellars in Melbourne.

Enjoy your weekend, enjoy your beers, and enjoy the simple pleasure of being able to log in and speak nonsense with your fellow beer nerds from around the world!

    Cheers!

    ...

Hey maaaaaannnnn. What's up? Hey, nice shirt; it's so.... peaceful... kind of like a shiny daffodil kissing the morning sun, man. The sun is so cool. I wish I was the sun. Well, I mean, I am a sun, you know? But man, the son? That'd be bitching.

Me? .....Oh, nothing. Just sharing this bowl of herb, man, with this herbed beer. You want some? I mean, like, you don't have to. I'm not judging. Hey, have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a judge? Man, those wigs are way fucking tripped out. Did you know they used to be made from horse hair? I mean, horses need hair, man. Do you reckon they were asked? Hey horse dude, can I borrow your hair? Why the long face? Sorry, bro, but I need some of your mane, man... What? No, you're stupid, horse-man!

The beer? Yeah. it's herbed. Well, not that kind of herb, you know? And that's why I have this bowl. Hey, you want some? I've got, like, plenty more around here somewhere. Where did I put it? Hey Herby, where are you? Awww come on... it's here somewhere.

Oh, yeah, the beer. Well, when I poured it I was like whoa! Check out the colour, man. It's so fucking amber, man. Like a shiny amber mosquito funeral casket from Jurassic Park. Man, Jurassic Park is so old, like 1993 man, older even than Jesus. Hey, did you know this is a Christmas beer? Yeah, it's been, like, just chillin' in my fridge since Christmas. Probably should have drunk it before now. But it was chillin' with its fillin', and ain't done no spillin'. Man, my rhymes are killin'! Fuck, I should be a poet. I'd be all like, "yo, read my poems, man!" So anyway, the beer had this awesome, sweet head that looked like fluffy egg whites, and the carbonation, man, was like "Get me out of here, dude" as it flew up the glass into the atmosphere. Hey, maybe it wants to hang with the sun too? Wouldn't that be cool? L: 4

Man, you should smell it. Come on, smell it. It wants you to smell it. It's saying "Smell me, bro! Smell me!" No? Well, that's ok. No-ones judgey here. I'm not like, man, I sentence you to smell this beer, you know? I would be an awesome judge though. Do you reckon judges do bowls? They'd be all like "I judge this to be an excellent bowl! I sentence it to be cremated!" So anyway, when I smelled this beer, I was like "Oh my God! The pine!" It was soooooo sweet, herby and dank, man. You know how pines smell, like, piney and weedy? Yeah, this was piney and weedy, man. Weedy, piney, clementiney you want some bowl then here have miney! Was there malt? I dunno, man, the pine was like, "get in my nose!" and I couldn't get much else. S: 3.5

The taste? Here. try some. Taste is so cool. Hey, you know what tastes good? Tacos. I could eat a taco for hours. Imagine how big that taco would be. It'd be like. "I pity the fool that doesn't eat me!" Mr Taco. Mr T! Mr T for Taco. BA Bataco. No - BA Battacus!! Ha!!! Fucking genius. Taco, ya crazy fool!

Oh yeah, the taste. What was I saying? Man, I'm hungry. You want some tacos? Oh, the beer. It's sweet and piney and dank just like when it stuffed itself in my nose, man. And it's bitter, like your angry neighbour bitter. Smacks you right in the back and sides of the tongue, but that's ok, I'm not a fighter. I'm like, if you want to be bitter, beer, then you be bitter. I'm down with that. It's made my tongue kinda numb, though. Comfortably numb. Like the song. Fuck that song use to sing to me. But anyway, maybe that's the bowl. You sure you don't want any? I've got plenty. No? That's cool, man. So anyway, I reckon this beer's just that bit too sweet, like it's had a bath in honey and forgotten to towel off. Or, like, maybe it did, and I'm the one with the honey problem... Fuck, my towel would be so sticky! Have you ever had a towel stick to you? That'd be pretty freaky.... T: 3.25

What's it like in the mouth? Well that's kind of personal, man! Oh, you mean the beer? Ha! Just fucking with ya, man! Seriously, though it's pretty thick... The beer is too!!!!! Ha, I'm so funny! There's a bit of prickle on the tongue, like I just popped a rough tab, but otherwise it's pretty nondescript. M: 3.5

Anyway, man, it's been great to see you! We should hang out more. Like, hang out because we're best friends, because you're super awesome, man. Maybe next time we can share a bowl, and get really super mechatronic high. That'd be cool. We'd be like, "Mechatron, assemble your bowl!" And all of the pieces of the bowl would fly together and kick the shit out of Godzilla or whomever the fuck he wants to fight. Mechatron wouldn't bother with this beer, though. He'd be like, it's a bit muddled, man; sweet, dank, bitter and herby, kinda like it's trying to go all Belgian mafia on my arse but then remembering it wants to be West Coast gangsta. But that's cool. I'm not judging, right? o: 3.25

    Now where are those tacos?

[IMG] Poured into a 20 tulip canned on 3/23/23. Pours a very attractive hazy yellow orange with a finger sticky white head that leaves thin lines of lace with nice retention. 4.25

Aroma is coconut, pineapple, passionfruit, peach, and apricot. 4.25

Taste follows coconut is the clear lead, but passionfruit, peach, pineapple, and apricot all lend a hand and make very pleasant. 4.25

Mouthfeel is medium, gentle carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 6.2% massive flavor but real easy going down. 4.5

Overall I am really enjoying, if you don’t like coconut stay away. 4.25 Thanks for another excellent opening @AzfromOz . Cheers

Good day BAs! Thanks @AzfromOz for the opening - sorry I couldn't force myself to read your exposition on your herbal brew. In general I enjoy your posts but today's was just too beyond the pale for me to read. I'm pretty much of a KISS kind of guy.

    My New Breakfast Beer is:

Knuckle Sandwich from Bootlegger’s Brewery. 16 fl oz can from @2beerdogs in NBW BIF 17. Reviewed 29/04/23 (Review 3086). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottom of can stamped “02/17/2023”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 47.4 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 55.2 degrees F.
    Appearance – 4.25
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Deep orange amber (SRM ?), opaque. Under direct light, looks like cider sans precipitate. When rear lite, translucent orange amber.
Head: Large (Maximum 4.7 cm, aggressive center pour), fulvous, high density, average retention, slowly retreating, leaving a 1.6 – 2.0 cm crown with an undulating upper rim and a complete rocky layer. After a couple of minutes exposed to air, the crown lightens from fulvous to between beige and wheat.
Lacing – Fair. Medium wide smooth three-dimensional band of tiny to small bubbles.
Aroma – 4 – Primarily hops – grapefruit rind and a bit of orange, no malt, no yeast. No ethanol (10 % ABV as marked on the label) aroma.
Flavor – 4 – Follows the nose – mild grapefruit with a bit of malt balancing the finish. Neither yeast nor ethanol. Very weak gastric warming. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Full; just short of creamy; lively but soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.5 Very drinkable DIPA – the whole is much greater than the sum of the parts! If this were available locally, I’d have a few four-packs on hand.
    Rating 4.12, rDev -3.15%

[IMG] Canned on 1/23/23. Pours a very attractive near pitch black with a 2 plus finger mocha head that leaves a few streaks of lace, with nice retention. 4.5

Aroma is metallic, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, and alcohol. 3.25

Taste follows metallic alcohol, coffee, cocoa, vanilla, and dark chocolate. 3.25

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium, gentle carbonation, not dry, and at 8.9% it drinks bigger because of the noticeable alcohol, but still easy enough drinking. 3.25

Overall this one is obviously a disappointment for me, just really scattered and strange flavors. Surprised because they are better than this stout. 3.5

Petskull Brewing The Superior bourbon barrel-aged Scotch ale. Brewed for the store where I make most of my craft beer purchases. It is the first beer I have experienced that appears to be over 100% ABV. The look is dark crimson red, with no foam, just a light off-white ring on top. The smell is malt, raisin, rye toast, almond, dark chocolate, and bourbon. The taste is Robitussin, almond, vanilla, aluminum, pumpernickel bread, and bourbon. It is not a very nice blend. The mouthfeel is syrupy, thin, and sticky, with low-medium carbonation. My expectations for this beer were low, so I am not too disappointed that I don't like this beer. I am going to see a lot of BAs who are not from Wisconsin in-person over the next two months. I will give the rest of this four-pack to some of them. Maybe they will like it.

Would you like lime with that?

The above is a question I associate with a server providing a bottle of Corona to a customer (somebody other than me since I don’t order Corona beer).

But for today this question will relate to: Founders Mas Agave Clasica Lime.

I have never had a Mas Agave of any kind/flavor and the only reason I have this bottle is because I saw this beer in the mix-a-six section of my local supermarket and I figured what the heck, give it a try.

Below is how this beer is detailed on the Founders website:

    “Mas Agave Clasica Lime

    Barrel-Aged Imperial Lime Gose

    ABV:10%

    IBUs:15

    RateBeer Rating: 97

We love cocktails. Like, really love them. If you ask us, few are more refreshing than the tart and tangy margarita and this barrel-aged beer pays tribute to that perennial classic. We took an imperial gose brewed with agave, lime and sea salt and then aged it in tequila barrels. Consider it a party in a bottle. ¡Más Agave Clásica Lime!”

I will confess that I did not read the beer label carefully and when I put this beer in my six-pack holder, I did not take note this beer was barrel aged. Well, I enjoy drinking tequila so this will just make things more festive!

    Served in my tulip glass:

    Appearance:

A deep gold - amber color with a thin white head which dissipates quickly.

    Aroma:

An interesting combination of lime, tequila, margarita mix, etc.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with the aforementioned flavor of lime, margarita mix, tequila but there is more here: salty, hint of vanilla, some sourness,…

    Mouthfeel:

Light – medium bodied with a bit of syrup-like as the beer warms/opens up.

    Overall:

This is not the sort of beer I would typically choose but I did enjoy the complexity of flavors that this beer provides; I thought it was very good.

If I see this beer again in a mix-a-six section I will buy another bottle (or two).

Central Waters Brewing Life of Illusion DDHNEIPA. Unlike the last beer, my expectations for this beer are high. This brewery usually exceeds high expectations, at the most reasonable prices in all of craft beer. The look is murky sunflower yellow, with minimal foam. The smell exploded from the can. Sweet and fruity. Beautiful. Mango, kiwi, lemon, lime, pineapple, and white grape. The taste is champagne-like, with a fruity finish. White grape, mango, lemon, cantaloupe, and kiwi. Delicious. The mouthfeel is juicy, thick, full, and rich, with medium carbonation. This is a delicious DDHNEIPA. Fresh, and an amazing value. You cannot beat this. There are notable breweries who send undated 4-pack NEIPAs to Wisconsin, and want us to pay around $30 for them. Please go away. We are good.

Good morning, Weekenders! We're kicking off our new beers not with something from NBS BIF #17 (not yet), but with some more Tree House:

This is The Space Between Truths, a blended BA stout.

Blended BA stouts from Tree House are usually simultaneously very good and disappointing. This one is neither - it's straight up world class.

The closest comp I immediately mentally summon is Cigar City's El Catador release Primordial Unity (which stands as my 2nd-highest rated beer of all time, behind only PTE). It's not quite at that level, but to even get into the same territory is high praise from me. (Our esteemed NBW reviewer @DoctorZombies also rated it astonishingly high; I recommend you check out his review!)

Bourbon rules the roost here, but not in an aggressive way. Aroma and tasting notes are nearly identical: chocolate, molasses, coconut, vanilla, toffee, caramel, brown sugar, oak, red grape, corn, toast; minor char. There's a slight sharpness on the palate that doesn't quite reach "sour mash" levels.

So, what could be better in a zero-additive blended BA stout with various barrels, aged up to two years overall? Frankly, not much; this delivers the goods. It's more approachable than BCBS, but it's also thinner and less rich. That's ... about it. Vaguely, I wave my hands and say, "It needs more richness and depth!" but what, exactly, I mean by that is uncertain. It doesn't need to be sweeter, exactly; it's not lacking in complexity; it just needs some more oomph, some more something.

That said, this is world class. I'm super digging it, and wouldn't hesitate to buy a few more bottles to share and age.

Now, catching up with the earlier posts:

@AzfromOz thanks for the intro and once again kicking off the thread! Sure, you have a time zone advantage, but I appreciate the time and effort you put into every introduction. Now if only you could work on your alliterative skills .... @cavedave

@SawDog505 I'm not sure if the name of the beer involves a verb or a noun, as in, "Smooth beats (v) Miami," and Miami lost, or "Smooth beats (n), Miami!" :grinning: I'm not sure who "Smooth" is in the former scenario, so I'm sure this is just supposed to be a shout out to our fantastic local music scene.

Central Waters Brewing Number 25 Silver Amherst. An amazing value. It looks and smalls great. Yellow-orange thick, hazy, appearance, with a nice light white foamy cloud cover. The smell is like being in a field, with a light breeze, as mangoes surround you. It is bready, yeasty, but fruity. The taste is that of a Hefeweizen beer, but with strong yeast flavors, and strong mango flavors, instead of the frequent lemon flavors that often accompany wheat beers. It is a nice change. It is executed perfectly. The fruit-to-wheat ratio is perfect. I don't recall experiencing a beer similar to this. The mouthfeel is hearty, bready, thick, and full, with medium carbonation. I believe I paid less than 10 dollars for a 6-pack of this beer. It is delicious. This is an unbelievable value. I hope this beer remains as a year-round option. This is the ultimate session beer. I am absolutely impressed.

Good weekend to all. I have two Three Floyds selections planned for the weekend. I never cared about going to Dark Lord (which has returned), but really miss their taproom (which has and likely will not). Going with their "Session IPA" today and their new to me at least February stout release tomorrow.

    Three Floyds Rites of Ramm

Bottle Notes: Single 12 oz bottle purchased refrigerated at Beer on the Wall for $2.50 on 4/15/23, refrigerated until opening. Bottled 3/22/23, 5.0% ABV, India Pale Ale brewed and bottled by Three Floyds in Munster, Indiana. A battle-tested, low ABV IPA built for the long, arduous road ahead.

Appearance: Primary pour with top off into a nucleated tulip pint glass. Foggy base, mild persistent carbonation, generous full foamy head lingers for several minutes leaving a creamy full cover over the base, and soapy lacing in it's wake. 3.75

Aroma: Mild dank, citrus, pine and lemon. Takes effort to reach, ok. 3.5

Taste: Consistent with the aroma though much stronger flavors burst through, a vitamin c tablet like citrus is front and center, tangerine and pine follow. Chill, flavors blend well. 4.0

Mouthfeel: Significantly dry, hop bitterness attempts to contain the sweet strong persistent flavors and does an OK job but sweetness reigns here with a light touch. Drinks a bit stronger than the 5% ABV, but still easy for the style. Sweetness tingles on the finish. 4.25

    Overall:
This is a solid "session IPA, packs a punch flavor and strength wise, though that is no surprise with Three Floyds. I'd grab this again, but they have so many winners in their portfolio, this is more of an occasional selection than regular rotation. This speaks more to the quality of Three Floyds than this particular selection. Drink and enjoy with confidence, glad I picked this up. 4.0

@GreenBayBA - With you on skipping most of the hype breweries coming through town. Hope you will enjoy the Revolution BA Scotch Ale I'm bringing up next month more than your Petskull (first I heard of this brewery) selection.

    Cheers!

I really wish I'd gotten to visit them. I worked a ton of time in Tomah and Wisconsin Rapids - I got my masters degree from UW and Wisconsin is like my second home. But out in Tomah and Rapids, the beer scene was shockingly dismal at the time. I'd stop a couple places in Madison to stock up after landing. The only time I could manage to drive out to Central Waters they were, unfortunately, closed. Scream III from New Glarus - that one I did stumble upon and loved it. Some good ones from Tyranena, 3 Sheep, and a couple unexpected gems from Potosi. Ale Asylum, of course and I was pretty fond of Great Dane Brewpub's Stone of Scone and Capital's Autmnal Fire which I had the good fortune to sample as fresh as it gets at the brewery before they shipped it up to Point for bottling. I enjoy your posts, especially about CW beers. I don't travel anymore, but certainly some fond memories.

A cool morning to start the day, but it is warming up fast and we should be in the 80s today.
Dogs have been walked, and we're going shopping.

Today's new beer is Madonna iipa from Zero Gravity in Burlington, VT.
A hazy bright orange/tangerine color. White head with some pretty lace.
Aroma of pineapple, melon, lemon, grapefruit, a little caramel, and a little pine.
Taste follows the nose. Citrus a little more prominent.
    Some hop bitterness.
    Very nice beer!
