I was a bit confused because I thought this was a new beer but according to Instagram its just a rebrand of the Light Lager. They said its same beer but this is 3.5% abv and the old Narragansett Light is 3.8% abv. Either way, its seems to be a pointless rebrand to me and you have to wonder if the Lager is next. Heres the old can design btw.

and this is the one that preceded the above one I think.

    From the above:
Some bad "history" there. The "96" light beers came out in the last half of the 1970s (when just about every brewer was jumping on the light bandwagon after the success of Miller Lite) not the " '60s " - at the time Narragansett was a subsidiary of Falstaff, which in turn was owned by Paul Kalmanovitz's S&P Corp., which also owned General Brewing Co., brewer of Lucky. (S&P also owned Texas' Pearl and, in the 1980s, would buy Pabst).

But they do get the "ugliest packages" right - but, of course, that was also the era of Generic beer and S&P brewed many of them.

Most of Lucky packaging in the 60s and 70s was pretty attractive. Lucky 96 and Lucky Red Carpet were S&P's ugly extensions. Their primary Generic Beer was more generic than most. They distributed theirs through their distributors to any retailer. Most generics were packaged (at least in CA) with specific chain store identification. They even went so far as to paint some of their trucks with Generic Beer in black and white.

I loved the Red Carpet beer can! (Beer was pretty good, too, IIRC - "pretty good" = "Better than Lucky Lager" but might have been just the can that made me think so?) If you got dizzy reading it, you knew it was time to quit.

I tried Lucky Lager in the fall of 69 when I moved from the Northwest to Southern CA and saw a label that I was familiar with. I thought it was OK, with a bitter bite. That was before S&P (Maier) took over Lucky (General Brewing). The S&P products, including their version of Lucky, had a house flavor that was not distinctive -- just remarkably bland. I tried the (S&P) Red Carpet once but don't remember it -- maybe after having one too many Rainier Ales?

Ran in the Providence Half Marathon this Sunday and got free drink tickets and this blue Atlantic can was one of my freebies. Nice watery lager to rehydrate after hot run around town.
