    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

From the road today in Southern Minnesota, we'll now back to Central MN.

I will be doing a multi post here, because I wasn't able to post from my first stop at Whit Wort Brewing in Gibbon, MN, because I was too busy talking to the brewmaster.

First 2 are from Whit Wort.

Grandmas Cookie - American Brown Ale - 11.9% ABV

This beer is pretty good overall. It is also crazy dangerous, because it doesn't drink like a beer that's almost 12%. It was listed here in the 8% range, but they must have upped it greatly, and a correction has been submitted.

    On tap at the source.
Pours a very dark amber. There's a bit of a tan head on the beer. Decent lacing on the glass.
Nose has a bit of sweetness, hint of sugar cookie.
Taste is similar to the nose. Some sugar cookie flavor, but not over the top sweet. Slight roasted nut flavor kicks in the mix. There's a bit of bitterness on the back.
This beer has no burn at all. Does not drink like an almost 12% beer. There is a decent body overall.
    Interesting beer.

    3 Legged Bunny - Light Lager - 3.8% ABV

This beer packs a lot of flavor into a little beer. This beer also has a Belgian hint to it that was interesting to me. I did write an UT review live, but wrote it here after the fact.

Copied from my untapped review with edits and additions. Enjoyed on tap at the brewery

Clear golden pouring with a white head.
Malty, biscuit aroma, with a bitter aroma showing up.
Flavor is sweet up front. Hints of lemon, and a bit of bubblegum. Reminded me of a Belgian style almost.
Body is decent for the low ABV. Not watery at all.
    Interesting beer overall.

Now I am in Hutchinson, MN at Bobbing Bobber Brewing, and enjoying this.

Irish I Were Fishing - Irish Dry Stout - 4% ABV

I am happy with this one. Tons of flavor in this package. It tastes like a Guinness, and I am a fan of that beer. Impressed.

On tap at the brewery, and this is on a nitro tap
This beer pours pitch black. Nothing comes through when held up to light. Since it was nitro, it took a long time to actually pour. The head finally came to 1 finger, and tan. Decent retention, and beautiful sticky lacing on the glass.
The nose has notes of coffee and dark chocolate. Somewhat roasted smelling.
Taste is like the nose. Very roasted with a good coffee and dark chocolate flavor. Creamy flavor pops in from the nitro pour.
Creamy soft body from the nitro. Decent body. Dry finish.
I am a fan of the style, and this is well made.

Sorry for the long post. I might pop in once more today after I get home. Cheers

That bodes well for my potential side-by-side with such a partner for this beer.

I also wanted to mention, and I wonder if you agree, that I thought the Utopias 120 Minute worked best at warmer temperatures. I know my review mentioned haziness, but that seemed to be chill haze as I inadvertently let a small amount sit as I tended to other things. I also felt the hoppiness I noted bloomed with the increased temps, to my delight (and I'd guess not to your partner's)

Red Ale with juniper berries, from Latvia (5.5%).

Pours a cloudy, pale mahogany coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of grainy, toasted, slightly caramelly malt and juniper berries, with some hoppy, floral, earthy accents as well.

Taste is a great balance of grainy, toasted, slightly caramelly malt and floral, earthy, slightly herbal hops, with a strong juniper berry presence as well. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some juniper berry lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This makes for a nice red ale with a rather strong juniper berry presence, almost turning it into more of a fruit and field beer, but the toasted, grainy malts and bitter, floral and earthy hops shine through as well, delivering a great overall balance. While the juniper berries show through strongly here, they don't feel overpowering either. Overall, this makes for a rather nice, quite fruity red ale that goes down both refreshing and satisfying.

Poured from a 16oz can dated 11/01/22, thick, oily dark brown with a small dark brown head that fades away quickly, no lacing.
Booze is noticeable when opening the can, dark chocolate, molasses and oak fill the air, very aromatic. Taste matches the aroma quite nicely.
This is thick'n chewy and I think a bit more carbonation would add something. One of the better BA stouts, IMHO.

Hope everyone is having a safe, healthy and happy weekend!

Found some new to me fresh beers in the mix a sixer pack. This is one of them.

Grimm Hot 100 Cold IPA 7 5 ABV. Never had a cold IPA before. I don't anything about cold IPAs, I'm guessing this is a NEIPA brewed with lager yeast. Not even sure if that's a thing or a style.

Beer has a nice inch plus head that slowly fads to a thin layer of foam with nice lacing. Beer is a fairly opaque dull yellow.

Nice nose of kiwis and sweet berries.

Mouthfeel is lighter than medium. Has ample crisp carbonation.

Taste is starfruit, pineapple, kiwis, a hint of sweet berries, and some bitter citrus .

Finish is crisp, clean, fairly dry and the bitter citrus hangs around till the end. I imagine I could drink a couple of these without feeling full.

Whatever a cold IPA is I like this beer. Good burst of hops, well balanced with a nice clean crisp finish. Not sure how this compares to other cold IPAs but will seek out some others to try.

Same: I noted slight cloudiness in my review, but that was definitely chill haze, as it's pretty darn clear right now (I have a couple of sips left).

As to how it develops as it warms, I'm not sure if I like it more, less, or about the same; I'm tending toward the latter. It's more floral now, having taken another sip, and the hops do seem to come out more.

It reminds me of the old school BA drinking guides, which suggested that imperial IPAs are best enjoyed around cellar temperature, vice colder, fridge temperatures - a suggestion that obviously predates modern low-IBU murkbombs. Letting it warm really allows the hop expression to play more with the malt.

In early September of 2021 I went on my first blind date :stuck_out_tongue:…that date was with the one and only @snaotheus, he took me out for an hour or two on a short brewery tour of Ballard...where we were staying for a wedding we had to go to. I'm so glad I finally got to hang out with Ryan and it was an awesome hour or so of beer and talk...the first beer I had with him was at Stoup and I went with their NW Red ale...in that moment it was one of the greatest beers I had ever tried, at least that is what my brain told me, fast forward to a year and a half of failed trade posts and I just finally just caved and asked Ryan to send me some, this was after his threats to demolish my porch, to confirm how much I loved it...here it is in all of its glory and yes I'd peg this as a top 3 beer for me; I love everything about it.

This beer is symbolic to me because without this thread of beer loving friends I would've never met a fellow BA, tried this beer ever, or shared it with you all, the generosity of this group is special and I love coming here every weekend...OK enough emotion and talking, onto the beer, why were all here...

    Stoup - Northwest Red (American Amber/Red 5.5%)

Deep shade of amber, hints of red; substantial head, off white with shades of very light brown, the head that lingers and sticks around is a substantially thicker creamy looking cap; some lacing here and there, very close to crystal clear.

Nose is so pleasant; gentle, yet aromatic and balanced. There is some nuttiness, lightly sweet toasted malt presence; it definitely has hops on the nose but they are very subtle and lend just the slightest aromatic woodsy floral character.

Taste much like the nose bring an absolutely perfect balance; so many rich flavors all coming together in perfect balance; there’s a big toasted malt character and some nut like characteristics, the malt up front instantly gets knocked in check by a very noticeable hop presence; lightly spicy in nature with dashes of pine; the aftertaste just the slightest hint of chocolate.

This beer drinks much lighter than it is; it is light in body but has a full rich mouthfeel, it is enhanced by a smooth creamy carbonation; this beer finishes very clearn and dry; with a really nice tongue coating bitterness.

This beer is perfection to my palette. The combination of flavors and aromas; all so so balanced, highly drinkable and beautiful to look at. It is so simple yet so complex. This has to be one of my personal favorite beers. Thank you Ryan!

I will be back later, chock full of nerves watching tonight's game in my special glass from @Coronaeus with another beer from @snaotheus , see you all in a few hours.

cheers to @sulldaddy for this epic brew; Tree House Very Hazy DIPA, 8.6% ABV; 4.47 overall

Pours like straight up juice with one finger of eggshell colored head. Nice head retention & lacing

S: Citrus & tropical fruits, nose could've been better.

T: Grapefruit, Kiwi Fruit, grassiness, pineapple & dryness up front. Lime, peaches, oranges & pineapple as this beer warms up, acidic notes from the pineapple, some grassy notes as well. Finishes with pineapple & orange, plus limes

MF: Medium body, fairly restrained carbonation, carbonation goes creamy as this warms up; nice balance

Very nice take on the style just got better as this warmed up. If everything else was equal to the flavor, I would rated this higher

Pours a nicely hazy golden straw color and features a fluffy white head that provides significant lacing. Beautiful beer. The nose features tangerine, mango, apricot, and melon notes.

That tangerine flavor is up front, with plentiful room mid-palate for the mango and apricot, and a nice touch of melon and a bit of oats at the back of the palate. This is complex and packed with flavor.

The mouthfeel is full and on the softer side, per the style. This is my first beer from Bellwood’s, and I’m a fan.

Third new beer to me today, but only now able to fully engage…Swamp Head Brewery’s “Dam The Dank”, a DH WC IPA with Simcoe, Columbus, Citra and Equinox; DH with Simcoe, Columbus and Equinox:

No canning date; pale amber pour with excellent clarity; tight white head; poor cap retention; initially a thin ring with a few spots of lace, then nothing. Nose is weedy grapefruit and earthy pine. Taste follows nose; firm malt base; some bitterness through out. Medium light body, moderate minus carbonation; some sticky resin in the feel. Overall a very enjoyable WC style with a nice earthy linger.

That's perfectly fine, mate! I wondered if it might be a bit too long and weird for a beer review, and what sort of feedback it would get. All feedback is good if well meant, so thanks for yours and I'll take it on board when I get around to writing another one!

    Cheers!

No mushrooms were harmed in the production of this walkabout. Brain cells were indeed damaged, but only via the intoxicating effects of our favourite toxic, psychoactive product: alcohol!
