Impulsively drove 4 hours each way in the middle of the workday. Right choices were made. Came home with a bunch of beer and some near beer in larger bottles on left.

    So far:
Shittily lit 1-year is already so much better than I remember. Thinner than expected but spectacular.

2-year already quickly making up on that whole thinness thing despite failing to fix my lighting. All 3 kids getting fully into MST3K beyond. Prettyyyy niii-iiiice.

My beer group and my wife surprised me with a 40th bday tasting.

The SJ was 2017 and was infected
DB VSOJ was the star of the night.
KH was good but past its prime.
BA6k was sweet for sure but amazing!!! (Thanks @Resistance88)

Back with Beer for Kings, made with the first runnings before Beer for Commoners. Wheatwine with Nelson? Yes please and thank you @FBarber !

This is coming across as fresh tasting and vibrant to me. The wheat is soft and lightly grainy while the hops really pop with sweet citrus and grapes. The world needs more wheatwine.

This beer will warm your gut...I think this is a 2016. Real strong alcohol balanced by sweet vanilla. Not really tasting any cocao but I never do. great brew.

Tree House Mighty Oak. 70° and sunny isn’t typically Barleywine weather but this works really well surprisingly. Much better than the OG Mighty I had at the tap room the other day. That one was a bit too abrasive but this one is well rounded. Still plenty bitter but nice and fruity as well

last beer of the night for me. this is Chuckanut Brewing and their Barrel Aged Barleywine. 10.8% ABV
Another beer from the NBS BIF #17 shenanigans. thank you @snaotheus !

Cross posted in the New Beer weekend thread.

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp bottle poured into my snifter. Bottle is #237. Purchased at brewery and shipped to me by @snaotheus thank you!
The beer pours a dark mahogany color that reveals garnet highlights when held to a light source. Several active streams of carbonation rise to the surface. A fizzy beige head of 1.5 cm foams up on the pour and fades to a sturdy edge layer and one large island on the surface.
Aroma is fairly sweet up front. I get toffee, brown sugar, some werthers candy, some dark fruit notes too. No real hop character that I can detect here and the ABV is pretty well hidden on the nose.
First sip reveals a lighter body than anticipated and some very fine tingly carbonation. texture is fairly smooth and the beer drinks easy. No sticky notes that many barleywines have.
Flavor is similar to the nose with no surprises. I get some brown sugar and sweet toffee and again some dark fruit. I think plum or fig notes. generally a sweeter beer. ABV is only present in bitey finish with black pepper flavor. No warming on the swallow or in my belly. Hops dont make any case for themselves on flavor profile either.
this is a good barleywine, less full body than I would expect and flavor is good, but could be bolder too. I am glad to have tried it, but its not a top tier barleywine in my book.

I'd only ever had one before, Solstice d'hiver by Brasserie Dieu Du Ciela and unfortunately I just don't remember enough about it. Just drank my first in memory last night, weights and measures by Exhibit A. Very very nice.

My favorite styles of beer have shifted from stout and porter types to Belgian strong dark ale to quadrupel range, and in my taste the barleywine style is at home in there. I'm sure I'll enjoy many to come over the years

How did it compare to “Commoners?”

I didn't taste any overlap between the two, they are completely different styles. Commoners is listed as a light lager here but I don't think that's right maybe pale wheat ale is closer, and it used only liberty hops while Kings used nugget and Nelson.

My brief notes on Commoners, Light and clean with faint, bready sweetness and hints of berry, banana, and lemongrass.

I think that would be a much, much better category for the beer here.

really well done barleywine. leans more english than american as the malt and malt sweetness is the driving factor here. the bourbon barrel-aging cuts that natural sweetness quite well. really enjoyed this one. can’t wait to try the rye soon! cheers!!

    Greetings barleywine enthusiasts
Decided to open the only "2023" that I picked up this year.

Beautiful beer really. Lasting head and excellent clarity. The aroma is mild with caramel malt and citrus/pine. Taste is bittersweet burnt sugar caramel plus citrus and big pine. Strong bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with average carbonation and a semi dry finish. Plenty of hop resin left here to balance the impressive malt heft. Overall, excellent.

I normally hoard my barleywine, as I rarely come across them, but I picked up several more this weekend and felt this bottle was probably ripe for review. I was right. Cheers!
