Sadly, the makers of the best NEIPAs, WCIPAs and stouts in the province of Ontario is closing. it’s always disappointing when a brewery closes, but when it is one of the best, it is doubly so… https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs3l51Rgn8a/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Was wondering if someone would post this. I've lived in NYC for about 6.5 years now after moving from Toronto for work. I've gotten almost all my beer friends down here into Barncat at this point, and it's among my favorite breweries anywhere in North America when it comes to stouts and IPAs. So sad it'll be gone - a couple of great guys put a lot of heart and soul into that business and it really showed.
I don’t drink their beer as much as I’d like to; they are just a little out of the way for me and their hours made shopping their difficult. They were on par with so many of the hyped up US IPA factories. It’s the IPAs I’ll miss the most. Badlands hasn’t been as good as they used to be over the past few months. Third Moon is good. Recent Rouge River has been exceptional. But, Barncat was the best in the GTA. Bellwoods stouts have gotten really good over the past couple years, but I’ll still miss the Barncat stouts too. Very disappointing.
I definitely always had to go out of my way to plan a visit there - my wife's parents still live in Woodstock Ontario, so luckily for me it was always on the way home just off the 401, and we could even make a weekend trip if it was closed. Heck, I think I even called once when I knew I was going to be 20 mins past closed and they stayed there for me. Agreed with everything you said above - only had a handful of Third Moon and Badlands, but they're great. Bellwoods stouts are always good, but often quite different from Barncat's. Barncat's first-ever can, Triple Simcoe, is to this day the best TIPA I've ever had. Very little in this world competes with Cats in Space and Space Juice. Very few places anywhere are making barrel-aged stouts without additives as fun and drinkable as Barncat. Anyway, thanks for making a thread so we can sulk
Although I haven't been able to drink much of their beers, the ones I had were really great. On top of the IPAs and stouts, as mentioned before, a couple of years ago they did a festbier that was exceptional. They are going to be missed.
