Why all hazies taste the same

    True that it focused on haze and mouthfeel, but that's what I notice most about hazy IPAs. Drinking these things I am so often dismayed by what I call the acidic character. I mean, really sharp, scraggly brambles down the throat. I wonder where that comes from, or is it just the acids from stuffing too much hop in the kettle?

    I thought this might be where the misunderstanding came from. I wan't talking about Lagers in general, that would as ridiculous as saying all IPAs taste the same, but specific styles of Lagers, for example Pilsner.

    All I was really trying to say is that the statement "All NEIPAs taste the same" is just as ludicrous as "All Pilsners taste the same".

    That article is a result of it being trendy to hate on Hazy IPAs right now. I feel a lot of this disdain comes from Hazy IPAs taking up so much shelf room in stores, brewers axing different styles from their line up that aren’t performing as well and focusing on hazys, and the beer hipster attitude of disliking their mainstream success, not the taste of the Hazy IPAs themselves.

    I’ve had some Hazy IPAs I’ve liked (FW mind haze) and some I’ve absolutely despised (Hardywood Sheep Mullet) just like any other style

    This is what's known as "hop burn" and is caused by excessive dry-hopping.

    I don't care for the style, so I have no input here.
    Even light beers, with their lack of taste don't taste the same, as some are much worse than others.

    Pretending that all NEIPAs taste the same is how cool beer people let us know that they’re cool. Far too cool, in fact, to enjoy a thing many other people enjoy. In 3 years when lagers have completed their transition from previously under appreciated style to being something the average craft beer drinker enjoys and many breweries emphasize, we’ll see posts and articles about how lagers are overdone and simplistic, and gruits offer a much wider array of flavor profiles.

    I think you’re on to something here. I don’t like hazies much at all. I love a good ipa, but hazies aren’t really my thing. I similarly don’t like Belgian tripels at all either. But I rarely find myself frustrated with Belgian tripels like I do hazies and I believe this to be precisely for the reason you described.

    It’s not totally unwarranted frustration, in my opinion. Sifting through four packs of colorful cans only to find again and again that they are hazies or going to a brewery/bar and 80% of the taps are hazies does indeed suck if you’re more into pilsners, porters, Vienna lagers, and brown ales (like myself).

    I am not a fan of hop burn. If the beer is packaged (i.e., canned) you can let it sit for a period of time (a couple/few weeks) in the refrigerator to mitigate the hop burn. Just decant while pouring and leave the sediment behind in the can. Yeah, a bit counterintuitive in that IPAs are typically advocated to be consumed very quickly but for some beer brands a few weeks of 'aging' in the fridge can be beneficial.

    Yesterday I attended the Logjammin' Lager beer festival in Philly; a short 'trip report' here:

    I got into a conversation with a brewery owner/head brewer and the topic of Juicy/Hazy IPAs came up. He advocated that a 'change' which would be beneficial to these sorts of beers would be a drier finish to improve drinkability. In other words make them very hazy, very juicy, but perhaps 'back off' the mouthfeel a bit it make it a 'better' beer as regards drinkability. A interesting thought/concept.

    I agree that the frustrations with it are definitely reasonable (except for the hipster one), especially the part where you go go a brewery and 80 percent of their taps are hazy IPAs. Unfortunately I think this trend is here to stay, just the type of beer that takes up the lion share of the taps and shelf space will change every couple of years. But at the
    same time I also get that they have to sell what’s going to make them the most money at the time, it’s just frustrating on a personal level

    Interesting. I agree that sometimes they can run too heavy and sweet. I would like to see this trend overall. I also find that just a touch of "green" or herbal hop flavors can sometimes clean the palate a bit to cut down the sweetness. That's just my preference though. There's a fine balance though as too much green or dryness can ruin the flavor and drinkability.

    If you are interested in something you are more likely to see the nuances, if you are uninterested in something then examples of that thing likely blur together.

    Plenty of excellent Hazies, just not a preferred style of mine. I like my IPA bitter, and those Californian ones particularly but also Belgian or English IPAs.

    The market is about saturated with them, even more so in the US and it’s probably here to stay. In a different (also interesting) thread, we had the style of beers and their popularity by decades. It’s been a number of years with the Hazy craze already.

    Personal preference goes to more “traditional” style, by that I mean those that have been around for many decades. Tripels, Stouts, Porters. IPAs also aren’t spring chicken of course thanks to the Brits and their then Indian colony, hazies are more a recent trend.
