I've had the same impression from other golden barleywines. It's not that it's bad, just not necessarily what I'm looking for.

It seems like the stronger malt base is needed to hold everything together. All the flavors in this beer are good, just not cohesive.

Really want to know how old this is. Tastes like bigfoot with 5+ years on it. Really good american barleywine!

I recently had a 30 month barrel aged barleywine from cycle brewing that I did not appreciate. Entirely too syrupy and sweet.

Skipped a bunch of other repeats but had to get this one in - Central Waters 3 year bourbon barrel barleywine. Might be my favorite of the bunch.

i've heard similar reviews from Cycle offerings. Very sweet and adjunct heavy (for the stouts, anyway)

I really like this sunday, but I wouldn't pony up for another bottle. I do my best to avoid the typical bomber up charges.

I agree - Cycle is crazy expensive. There are a bunch that sit on shelves here.

I don’t understand the purpose of going through the trouble to barrel age a beer just to drown out the flavor of it with excessive sweetness and adjuncts-Especially if they are nice barrels. We have breweries where I live that get BTAC barrels and condition the beer on loads of cakes, cookies and candy. Wtf?!? Just why?!? Let the barrel speak!!!

The bourbon barrel aging makes it sweet enough. Adding sweetness just throws it way too far into 'betus territory more often than not.

I'll spend big $$ for a unique or singular experience. Cycle is good but...

It's what "we" asked for. The reason they do it is because it was the trend that sold.

It's been a minute since i have enjoyed a barleywine. Actually, getting into a 2022 Wheatwine from Firestone Walker courtesy of @Resistance88. This one was aged in barrels for a year and also rested with coffee, cocoa nibs, and cinnamon. This is an interesting mix with the cinnamon standing out prominently and the nibs not far behind. The barrel and coffee are very much in the background and act to balance which it does pretty well for my palate. Overall a fun beer to try, rated 4.02.
    Cheers!

Onto round 2 and enjoying one of my favorite non-barreled ABW's. This was bottled in 9-2020; sad to say i have one bottle left. Classic dark fruits are popping thru nicely, and the ample hopping has held up very well.
    Cheers!

Just opened this 2013 bottle I’ve been holding on to—first couple sips are super tasty with a nice blend of brown sugar, caramel, vanilla and bourbon. Cheers!

    Hello all
I rarely drink American barleywines, but I stumbled across this one and it's alright. Didn't notice the stamp until I reviewed.

16oz can stamped M1217 13:55 presumably nearly 2 years old poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp 13% 90 IBU. Purchased recently at room temp. The beer pours opaque medium amber with khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. Slight lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength with caramel malt, oak and fading bourbon. The taste is bittersweet caramel with mild cardboard and bourbon barrel. Strong bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Alcohol is very well hidden for the ABV. Overall, very good if a bit faded. Still enjoyable.

    Cheers all!

This one is among the best Barleywines i have ever had . Really haopy i have another one . No signs of oxidation whatsoever
Per a text i sent Arizcards and discussed it similarly with @Beer_Economicus ( The Budweiser County Fan)
"just finished this one. aged great . I usually dislike bwines cuz they start getting sweet but this was a perfect marriage of malts, barrel and time! light toffee and caramel flavors , with some golden raisin notes and nice warmth on the finish"
