this beer was an absolute stunner. I rarely finish a 500ml in one sitting but took this one down with no issues at all

I cross posted this with the NBS BIF#17. Im gonna be drinking west coast beers from that event for quite a long time thanks to @snaotheus and his crazy box bombs!
This is Three Ryes Men bourbon barrel aged barleywine from Reubens Brewing out of Seattle. This beer clocks in at 13.7%. I dont notice it while drinking, but when my glass is getting empty it catches up with me!

    onto my review:
Sampling a 22 oz bottle at cellar temp and poured into my snifter. The beer is a 2022 vintage and has a GABF gold medal winner tag wrapped around its neck! Cool!
The beer pours a rich dark mahogany color with some garnet highlights. Tons of very fine active streams of carbonation rise to the surface of the beer. A densely formed creamy beige head foams up about 3 cm and comes close to the top of my glass. I dont quite get all 22 oz into the snifter.
The aroma on this is beautiful! Lots of brown sugar and toffee and hints of raisins, with a hefty dose of bourbon and hints of vanilla. Smells pretty much like what I expect from the descriptors on label.
First sip reveals a medium to thick body with sticky texture that coats my lips on each sip.
Flavor is similar to the nose and malty and complex. Lots of toffee and brown sugar mixing as dominant notes and allowing some raisin and dark fruit to come through. The finish is also fairly dry on my palate. I never get any hop notes on this beer and the booze is not warming nor peppery , making this a slightly dangerous beer.
This is a very enjoyable malt forward bourbon barrel aged barleywine. Glad to have tried this one, and would gladly drink it again. Another solid beer from one of my new favorite west coast breweries!

A really nice wheat wine from Cabin Brewing in Calgary. Walnuts, almonds, caramel, honey, bitter citrus peel, wheat, brown sugar, and a bit of chocolate. Very enjoyable!

I have good access to Jackie O’s and their fine English style barleywines; if you’d ever like to trade, then lmk. Cheers.

Just tried Char No. 4 from Whiskey Hill/Butchertown and while I don't find myself at shares where a 750 can be appreciated as often anymore, I'm tempted to try to obtain a few of these since they're still available on the WH website.

But, on a positive note, I am a lightweight now, and I chugged the last third of this, and paired it with homegrown bong tokes, and the alcohol in this baby is just as potent as when it was "fresh", and I am feeling extremely nice. Cheers, y'all!

Big thanks to @DIM for this one! Last of the Steam Powered Trains from Grimm. A barleywine aged in cognac barrels. Comes in at 11% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a murky brown with basically no head. Small bubbles rising throughout, so definitely not still. The nose is great. I immediately get the cognac notes. Figs, toffee, prunes, bread, and a slight earthy note.

The taste is super intense. Tons of cognac, port, plums, raisins, toffee, and brown sugar. Definitely a sticky and creamy mouthfeel. Wow. Just a fantastic sipper. The alcohol is not detectable in any way. The aftertaste is full of fruity sweetness and caramel. Lovely.

So glad I got to try this one! Thanks so much for sending this one, Dan!

-Toppling Goliath - Meteora Barrel-Aged Barleywine-

Pours deep and brooding, dark brown… almost black. Rust-hued beige head bubbles up and quickly settles. Clear weight, but doesn’t seem overly heavy on the pour.

On the nose, notes of rich, caramelized dates & molasses. There are some undertones of dark chocolate and oatmeal raisin cookies.

The palate is rich & sweet, with subtle esters on the finish that leave a mild bitterness in its wake. The profile brings flavors of Werther’s caramels, fig jam, stroopwafel, and brown sugar. While coming on very sweet, the warmth, fruit, and subtle bitterness imparted by the barrel helps to balance the strength of the base barleywine.

As mentioned above, good weight that’s not overly bogging, with a low, even carbonation that cuts through and prevents an overly syrupy experience. The esters start to come forward on the mid-palate, accompanying a long finish with a touch of dry bitterness.
