    Hello,

I need to find a similar beer to the “Mountain Goat Summer Ale”. From my understanding this beer is brewed in Victoria Australia. This is my father in laws go to beer currently(he is from AUS) and he is coming to visit us in about two weeks. We live in Florida and I can not get this beer shipped or find it anywhere in FL.

Can anyone recommend a similar beer to the description posted below or if anyone has tried this beer? I need an alternative that I can get in the US - particularly Florida.

    Description of the Summer Ale:
“This one’s come about after a couple of summers playing around with aromatic, hoppy and sessionable ales like Skipping Girl and Goldilocks. There’s plenty of malted and unmalted wheat in the grist make up, and a big burst of fruity Nelson Sauvin and Motueka hops on the nose. For the tech-heads the numbers are: 20BU, 7EBC, 4.7%ABV.”

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!!

Sounds like a blonde wheat ale. Maybe something like Oberon.

Or—hear me out—Pops could try some tasty local Florida beer while he’s visiting and drink Mountain Goat Summer Ale when he’s back home Down Under.

Maybe not as hoppy aromatic, and a little stronger, but maybe he'd like an Oberon.

I am unfamiliar with the small(er) craft breweries in your area but that is likely your best bet (if you luck out) is to find a locally brewed beer that features those two New Zealand hops. Nelson Sauvin has been around for a while so likely a more readily available hop for local craft breweries. Motueka is not hard to find (e.g., last month I homebrewed a Motueka IPA) but not a well-known/used hop variety in my area.

Is your father-in-law a fan of Coopers Sparkling Ale? Maybe that will bring him a sense of ‘back home’ drinking?

    Cheers!

P.S. For folks who have an interest in the New Zealand hop scene, just yesterday I watched this video podcast:

browsing through untappd doesn’t sound like it’s overly hoppy. The description given with Nelson and Motueka sounds like it would be more tropical but the reviews I have seen sounds like it’s pretty light on the hop side. Description given mostly is citrusy from a hop perspective.

I would look for DankStar by Civil Society in Jupiter, FL. - American Pale Ale brewed with 2 Row malt and hopped with Nelson Sauvin, Simcoe and Mosaic. 5.5% ABV

Depending on where you are in FL, I would recommend stopping by Calusa, Magnanimous, or Tripping Animals to get something in the same ballpark as the Mountain Goat Summer Ale.

    From a BA review:

"Oh yeah loads of passionfruit and pineapple leap out of the can. Flavour is lots of tropical fruit."

    Oh well!?! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Cheers!

I'd email each of the breweries that is local to you with the same request that is in your original post here, and see which breweries answer with their suggestions for one or two of their beers. Then while F-I-L is visiting you'll have something to do to entertain him by visiting each brewery to follow up on their suggestions. If he's a beer lover he'll enjoy the challenge.

might be the difference between Untappd users vs BA users.

I live maybe 90 minutes down the road from Mountain Goat, and it's worth noting that it was bought out by one of the multinationals (in this case, Asahi) some years back and is one of those breweries whose beers have noticeably declined since the purchase, at least in my view.

That said, my initial Untappd review from 2018 noted the beer had a sherbety, citrusy quality. My subsequent check-in, which I think is post-acquisition (but don't quote me there), had no detail on it.

Honestly, any mildly hopped, citrusy pale ale would probably do, and as @draheim mentioned, tell him he's crazy not to be drinking local while he's there (and while you're at it, ask him if he'll mule some beers back for me!).

The can pictured below is the re-branded 2021 version, while the bottle is the 2018 version.

    Cheers

Do what I would do: Tell your FIL when he's in YOUR house in AMERICA he's going to drink American beer. Then pour him a Corona, squeeze a lime in there, give him (and his daughter/son) a slap on the butt, then walk away. If he doesn't like it he hop on that 47 hour flight back to The Under.

Or just pour him a Jai Alai. That's pretty good.

I received a can of Mega Mix Pale Ale in a gift pack a while back, and from my notes it sounds like it might be pretty close to what you're looking for. It is brewed by MIA Beer Co. in Doral. It gets high reviews here. Jai Alai, PseudoSue, and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale are all outstanding as well.

    Good luck! :beers:

Oops! Original thread title did not specify "wheat ale," which this is not. Still recommend it, though.
