Greetings from the East coast! Not sure what the craft beer scene is in the Portland area but wanted to let y'all know one of our Virginia hype breweries, The Veil, has been the featured brewery partner for this month's pop-up at Function PDX. Looks like it goes through the end of June. Just found out about it but scrolling through Untappd check-ins it seems like a lot of locals have checked it out with some good reviews. Cheers and chugs!

Portland actually gets pretty regular drops of Veil stuff. I've enjoyed what I've had with the exception of Crucial Aunt. That was a bitter boozy mess.

I was more bummed missing out on Monkish being there last month. I've never seen Monkish beers out here.

Is Wander doing a month there again this year? (before y'all tell me to just go ask them I'm back in the Finger Lakes for a week)

Not sure. I know Cellarmaker is there for July.

Nice I wasn't aware they sent out beers that far West on a regular basis though I know they do out of market random drops from time to time. At least for shipping beers to consumers they say they stick to states in which are able to deliver within 2 days.

"Regular" might be a bit strong, but we do get periodic drops of Veil stuff (as @SeaAle alluded to). Seems like every three or four months I'll suddenly see something from Veil (usually an IPA or APA) at several different places around town.

The stuff I've been able to try has been OK, for the most part. Had a glass of Alone Alone back in February, which is the last time I can recall seeing anything from Veil.

Is there anything currently available over at Function that you'd particularly recommend?

I went on Tuesday, presently the IPAs are all hazy, the sours are all fruited, and the stouts are all pastrified. I had a pour of "Lord Whangdoodle 2020 Cookie Creature" which was aged in like four different barrels and with half a dozen adjuncts for about two years. I would not rate it as high as I see it on untappd right now.

Here's their lineup for the rest of the year:
    AUG: @yakimachief Showcase w/ @cloudburstbrew + @pinthousebrewing + @hopbutcher + @otherhalfnyc
    SEPT: Fresh Hops w/ @singlehillbrewing
    OCT: @SinglecutBeer
    NOV: @bowandarrowbrewing
    DEC: @pizzaportbrewingco

Maybe I'm off the hype train these days, but I don't know a lot of these folks. I am super stoked for Pizza Port in December though, I'll definitely be in for that!

I couldn't find out how to see what Veil beers Function has so can't really make any recommendations. I live about an hour away from Veil but not all into them too much. It's been a while since I had anything. As @aventinus stated, their Sours are fruited (heavily) often very thick and seems like in their Stouts they throw in a ton of adjuncts in just about every one they do. Neither of which are my thing. If they have a straight up BA Stout those are often really good. Circle of Wolves Barleywine is excellent. As for IPAs, after having so many early on they all began to taste pretty much the same but I do enjoy their "flagships" Master Shredder and Crucial Taunt though they only brew / can once every couple months so i wouldn't necessarily call them true flagships. I've had some of the Broz Night and ferrari series beers which I have really enjoyed as well.

Bow and Arrow is in Albuquerque, NM, and is Native American/woman-owned. They do a lot of hazy IPAs, lagers, and wild/sour ales. I've tried maybe a half dozen of their beers, and enjoyed most of them.

I only know Singlecut because they have a beer called Softly Spoken Magic Spells. (The lyric is better than the beer.)

I, too, am stoked for Pizza Port.

I wouldn't miss out on the Single Hill pop up for fresh hop season. They're one of the best in the game for that time of year.

I stopped in on Sunday and had the flight: a lager (quite good), two hazy IPAs (one great, one eh) and 2 smoothie goses (not bad - taster sized was enough). I also grabbed a 4 pack for the road with a couple hazy (pinkferrari, which I had and enjoyed and Bug Man, still in the fridge), Hollow Place (pastry stout with apple brandy) and Luxurious Luxury (big smoothie gose with a bunch of berries collab with Evil Twin) which I mistook for another IPA.

I really dig what Function is doing. The last few years of the many that I lived in LA had a lot of Monkish in them, so that was a treat.

Agreed, but Sept seems less than ideal timing, especially the first two weeks or so.

As I'd never been to Function before, thought I would stop by.

Interesting place. They currently have 6 veil beers on tap, which include a hazy IPA and dipa, two gose, a hefe and a ba pastry stout. They also have a good selection of cans and bottles.

It's a bit pricey. $8 a pint for everything other than the stout, or $5 for a half pour. The stout is $8 for an 8 ounce pour. 16 ounce cans are $8 a pop, or $28 for a 4 pack. Bottles look to be quads and stouts and are spendy as well (in excess of $30).

If you're a fan of Veil stuff, then this is a great opportunity. If not, don't expect to have your mind blown by any of the beers available. If you're a fan of Grape Lotion pastry stouts, the Veil version will totally be your jam.

I would add that it appears PDX must have gotten another drop of Veil stuff. NW Growlers for example, currently has Blue Ferrari NEIPA and Crucial Aunt mango DIPA on tap. I'm assuming prices there are a bit better than over at Function.

Veil makes some nice beers. One of the few east coast places that I've had quality WCIPAs from in the days before hazies became the norm.

It's a new month and Cellarmaker has taken over Function for July... has anyone gone? Are the beers worth the hype?
