Poured from a 16 ounce can into a Teku glass.

Look- Straw, very hazy, plentiful visible large particulate, white frothy head, average head retention and lacing.

Smell- Clementine, apricot, floral, medium strength of scent.

Taste- Weak clementine and strawberry, overwhelming astringent, highly herbaceous, weak strength of flavor.

Feel- Medium body, highly astringent, average carbonation, mildly mouth coating, high bitterness.

Overall- Great straw color with so many particulate it looks like a snow globe. Very pleasant bouquet of clementine, apricot and floral notes with medium strength. Flavors were very weak and overwhelmed by astringent herbal character. This beer had medium body, but it’s feel again was marred by extreme astringency. Overall the look and smell of this beer were great, but unfortunately the flavors and feel left much to be desired.

Fizzy , sudsy mouthfeel that settles to a tart tanginess , clean, crisp, tangy

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Well, I had an amazing time in Annandale with @LesDewitt4beer , @Mdog , @cheeseheadinMinneapolis , and @GreenBayBA tonight. Great meeting all of you (in the case of GreenBayBA, once again), and it was just a blast. I hope to meet up with you all again sometime. Now, I'm back home, and it's time for a new beer.

This isn't my first new beer of the night, but it's the first I'm going to post here tonight.

cheeseheadinMinneapolis so kindly gave me this beer
    [IMG]
Bock - Bull Falls Brewing - Wausau, WI - 7.2% ABV

I am really digging this beer tonight. The feeling of it is just wonderful, as is the flavor. I am quite happy and impressed with it, and so thankful it was given to me.

    From a can

This beer pours dark brown in color. When I hold it up to the light it looks like more of an amber color. Since it is darker, I can't really see through it, but, it does look somewhat clear. The head comes out to 2 finger, and somewhat tan in color. Frothy looking and decent retention. At the end, there's just 2 arcs of lacing on my glass.
The aroma is somewhat light. Some cola notes to it. Malty, biscuit hints as well.
Taste - Fairly mellow right away. The flavor in this beer builds somewhat. I get some notes of cola, and caramel. There's a faint nutty flavor that comes into play in this beer as well.
I am liking this body. Nice and smooth, like silk. yet full feeling at the same time.
I am really enjoying this beer. Quite tasty tonight.

All right, see you all tomorrow. Cheers all!

    Howdy BA!

This is the last of the beers I received from @TurkeysDrinkBeer back in August 2022. Either I'm a slow drinker or those beers are exceptionally well camouflaged. Anyway, the beer was consumed and it was sen-bloody-sational!

L: In the glass, it's a rusty black, the colour of a tinned dark cherry. A fragile rim of dirty white head clings to the edge of the glass. Slow-moving, small bubbles can be seen moving up the glass in orderly columns.

S: Musty oranges, plums, figs, dates and brown sugar overlay cricket balls, old cupboards of clothes and cloth, and your grandma's Christmas spice rack (your grandmother - mine was Ukrainian so she didn't have one!).

T: The taste is tangy, musty, port-like, sweet, syrupy, barrelish and despite that mishmash of sensations, utterly balanced. There's an orchard of plums, figs, and grape skins. Sweet, sugary musk sticks vie with alcoholic warmth and mulled wine with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Not one flavour note dominates, leading to an incredible ride of dialled-back, toned-down and considered flavours, all of which come together and call for winter nights, crackling fires and old, leathery furniture.

M: It's quite full and still in the mouth, but it plays to that dialled-back flavour notes and ratchets everything up another notch.

O: This is the ultimate synergy of flavour, mouthfeel and nose. As noted, nothing jumps out as dominating the beer, but taken as a whole the beer delivers a uniquely smooth and luxurious experience.

I noted somewhere else that losing Hair of the Dog is a tragedy, even for a beer nerd 10,000km away, and this beer does nothing to change my thoughts.

    Cheers!

Clear golden liquid, numerous active carbonation streams, frothy white one finger foam cap, reduces to a think layer , spotty lacings

Good day BAs! Well, I'm back again after sucking down another from @2beerdogs and NBW BIF 17:

It's always difficult for me to post comments about beers that seem 'way below average, particularly when they've been received in something like NBW BIF ###! Usually I just post the review and don't comment elsewhere. However, some of this weekends earlier reviews have given me courage, so here goes:

Dead Man’s Game from The Lost Abbey. 12.7 fl oz bottle from @2beerdogs in NBW BIF #17. Reviewed 25/06/23 (Review 3129). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated bottle. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 51 degrees F (Label suggests 50 – 55 F) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 56.3 degrees F.
    Appearance – 3.5
First pour – Deep Amber (SRM 15), hazy.
Body – Chocolate Brown (SRM 20), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear lite, light penetrates at the edges only – ruby at the bottom and gold at the top. Moderate amount of sediment remains in the bottle and a ring occurs at the top edge of the liquid.
Head: None. Eventually a partial bubble ring evolves.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4.5 – When the cork is “Popped,” concord grapes rule. After a while, caramel takes over. No yeast, no hops. No ethanol (14% ABV, according to the label).
Flavor – 4 – Begins sweet and caramel-ly. Perhaps a little dark fruit. No yeast, no hops. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No ethanol flavor but mild gastric warming happens. No trace of tannic acid or vanillin. Ends with a touch of dry malt flavor.
Palate – 3 – Medium; tending to syrupy; nearly flat.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 (After deducting 0.25 point for an undated personal container) the initial grape odor makes me think of Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination – particularly since it rapidly dispenses and is replaced. Maybe that aroma is one of the goals – along with the low carbonation – Dead Man indeed!
    Rating 3.89, rDev -10.4%

To me, this seems like a failed batch that was sort of drinkable, so they bottled it anyway. Or this was just a bad bottle. Sorry Derek - I wanted to give this a good review.

Welcome to New Beer Sunday #957! Today is part two of my weekend exploration of two new beers from a great Chicago brewery, this one provided via trade by a great Wisconsin Beer Advocate, @Danmullens1

Hop Butcher For The World Live From Chicago

    Can Notes:
Obtained via trade with BA @Danmullens1 in mid-May, refrigerated upon returning home until today. 16 oz canned 4/18/23 10:13:22 AM with can stamp note "Now In Stereo". 6.75% ABV, Simcoe, Citra, Galaxy & Talus-Hopped India Pale Ale. Brewed and Canned By Hop Butcher For The World in Chicago, Illinois and Bedford Park, Illinois. Tasting Notes: Fruit Cocktail, Pleasant Pine, Sweet Grapefruit.

Appearance: About a 12 oz primary pour into a teku glass. Golden peach murky pour, creamy rich bright white head lingers for a few minutes before leaving clumpy lacing. 4.25

    Aroma:
Peach, grapefruit, citrus, pine. Bright, sweet, bold in strength, definitely drawing me in. 4.25

    Taste:
Pine steps on the metal bringing a pleasant to me bitterness, citrus bringing bursts of sweetness in between the pine assertiveness, but cannot displace. Grapefruit lingering in the back smoking a cigarette. Nice. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Dry and bitter, hits me stronger than the ABV but that could be my declining tolerance over the last few years. Bitter over sweet, though both work well and like the alternating experience of bitter pine interrupted by bursts of of citrus, like biting into an orange tic tac in between sips. Gentle carbonation, medium creamy body. Dry pine citrus finish extending the enjoyment. 4.5

    Overall:
This is an excellent offering, hits my preferred flavor and bitter profiles. With each new Hop Butcher I come across, I appreciate their brewery more and more. Really appreciative of this beer provided by Dan, and will be seeking future releases of this one for my refrigerator. 4.25

Looking forward to catching up on previous week threads and enjoying a return to nice temps here (70s to low 80s). Cheers!

I think this is the first new one for me this weekend, late to the party for sure!

Courtesy of @Whyteboar for another Founders Treat

    Founders - KBS Chocolate Cherry

    Bottled 12.6.22

Poured at fridge temp into a tulip glass

Pours that deep brown I've come to know for KBS with a fluffy tan head that settled into a .5F ring and loose cap. 4

Aroma is largely coffee paired with milk baking chocolate, fairly recognizable KBS. Perhaps the cherry comes out more as it warms up, but I didn't notice it from fridge temp to about 40°. 4

Striking but brief cherry sweetness, chocolate, touch of lightly bitter coffee and a hint of lingering dark overripe cherry. 4.25

Body is warming from the first sip, pleasantly full, I'd say just having crossed the line from medium to thick, which is a great place for my personal tastes. Only light carbo and lingering cherry cordial candy taste. 4.5

Overall I think after all the cellar gold of Founders sent to me by @Whyteboar, fresh (or nearly fresh) can be as good as aged! I think the cherry was correctly advertised as far as being able to taste it, only thing was I couldn't quite pick it up on the nose, but this was a great breakfast replacement (it's coffee, right?) and I'd certainly have it again. 4.25

    Attended a great get-together yesterday with @GreenBayBA , @LesDewitt4beer , @Victory_Sabre1973 , and @cheeseheadinMinneapolis --see yesterdays WBAYDN? thread for the shenanigans.

Received this beer from @GreenBayBA , Central Waters Passion for Pineapple:
Appearance: Yellow sludge with an ok head.

    Smell: Sweet pineapple puree.

Taste: Big pineapple taste upfront and throughout, moderate bitterness comes in halfway through, then finishes with a blend of pineapple and bitterness. Hugely fruity and pretty heavy feeling.

Overall: Got this from @GreenBayBA, thanks! Really intense pineapple experience with this beer, I guess I'm getting my recommended daily allowance of fruit! Pretty heavy feeling beer for an IPA.

Poured from tap at Winking Lizard, the body is a yellow-orange with large white head. Nice lacing throughout the drinking. Good looking beer in the glass.

A simple beer with wafts of black cherry. I waited for the fake cherry taste, but it never came. Just a nice muted but present cherry flavor. Delicious.

Good carbonation and an unexpected very smooth finish. Good mouthfeel.

Very much a pleasant surprise that was easy drinking and refreshing. I’ll have to try it from bottle or can to see if it matches tap poured.

Larry, do you happen to know if this beer was solely fermented with Brett? My understanding is that to obtain a lot of barnyard funk you need to first ferment with an ale yeast strain (preferably a Belgian Trappist/Abbey yeast strain) and then secondarily ferment with Brett. A beer brewed solely with Brett will be ‘cleaner’ in comparison:

    “A 100% Brett fermented beer

I have personally not produced a beer solely fermented with Brett yeast but from my readings those beers tend to be less funky with fruity (esters) being the primary feature from the yeast. Perhaps with extended time in the bottle (e.g., bottle conditioned beer) some funk will express itself. In this way, with patience a single batch of beer could be the equivalent of differing beers, offering differing flavor profiles over time.”

    https://www.morebeer.com/articles/Brettanomyces

    Cheers!

P.S. You may already know this but a traditional (Finnish) Sahti is fermented with baker’s yeast: “For authentic sahti you need baker’s yeast…”

    Good afternoon NBW
My 21 year old is home from college working this summer and things like this just wind up in my fridge.
    Busch Light Peach
12oz can stamped 22NOV23 SJ1636 poured into a vintage footed bar glass at fridge temp 4.1% ABV. The beer pours very bright light yellow with nearly white head. The head recedes to a pencil thin ring and scattered bubbles. Minimal lacing. The aroma is moderately strong peach (ripe, sweet, mildly artificial). The taste is more of the same with heavy peach flavor, sweetness tapering off into mild diacetyl with no appreciable bitterness. Mouthfeel is thin bodied with above average carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall, truth in advertising.

    Cheers all!
