What would you like to see in a BeerAdvocate mobile app?

I'm not saying that one is coming any time soon, nor do I want to dwell on our past attempts or why we need or don't need an app, but rather let's focus on features that you'd like to see in a BeerAdvocate mobile app. This could range from basic must haves found in other apps (beer-related or other) to completely new ideas designed for BeerAdvocate.

    So, what's your wishlist?

Interactive Mapping so one can see at a glance what is in an area.

BA is fast to use, runs smoothly but I would be happy with an app if that should ever happen.

Many of us have « complained » in the past about having to use a third party to host image here.

I’m out of the loop for such tech issues or improvements, I just trust you’ll do the right thing at the right time.

Echoing the above, I’m hoping for an easy way to post photos. The mobile webpage is incredibly smooth and easy to use, in a way that is almost something I take for granted—until I try reading something else online that freezes up or is glitchy. Would an app improve on that experience?

More data and graphs showing movement of ratings over time. Easily accessible lists for top rated overall, style region, geo location.

Photo recognition (ie find beer by label) or bar code reader.

Nearby places based on your location like in the good old days

    • Create an AI that searches keywords in my reviews and compares beers I rated highly with those of other users to recommend new beers I, as an individual whose taste it knows, would like.
    • Have the AI actually give beers a rating specific to me (the rating can be color coded to indicate a degree of confidence in the rating — high, medium, low — based on data sets available).
    • Let me enter in my preferred retailers and bars so it can specifically recommend beers available for sale in those establishments
    • If at all possible, include canning/bottling data with those recommendations to up the beer nerd appreciation; this may have to be a second gen feature once everyone is using it to convince sellers to provide that data.
    • Include a beer preferences user survey when people sign up to aid the AI for new users with few reviews
    • Include some sort of gamification with people actually rating the beers that the AI pre-rated for them to see how close it got … giving people points and possibly allowing them to allot points to or grade the AI on a per-beer basis.
    Also…
    • Include custom beer-related emojis. Maybe allow higher users to unlock new emoji sets available only to them or first to them. Introduce “one month only” emojis.
    • Integrate Untappd data into this new much cooler app.
    • Make it more convenient than the website.

Definitely an easy way to upload photos!

Just having the app again would be so nice! Everyone's ideas above are really good, I emphasize the echo of easier way to upload photos.
I don't know if this is even possible, but it would be neat to be able to scan a tap list to see and have the ba ratings get pulled up? Like google translate if you will.

Also.... let's get the styles fixed up for the new app! #SplitUpSaison

This is going to sound like blackmail, but interactive mapping is probably the only feature that would cause me to download and use an app.

...I see a mobile app as a quick way to explore and boast about (i.e., document) recent beer experiences and finds while on the move...in that regard, I concur with @WillieThreebiers and @shanex:
    • interactive mapping
    • direct photo upload

If UT and BA are going to continue to work together, some sort of cross platform check-in system where if you check in a beer on one, and your accounts are linked, it checks in the same beer on the other app.

Obviously I prefer BA because reviews can be more descriptive, so there's probably a limitation there on word count, but I'm sure that can be accounted for by cutting off the paragraph if checking in on BA and pushing it to UT.

Vivino, the wine rating app, has the capability of scanning wine lists and scanning labels and getting you to the profile page of the said wine. It's crazy!

I agree with this. Bringing back the "Nearby" feature to show local breweries and beer bars/stores that are in the Places database

All this AI stuff in action would be pretty gnarly. You're thinking in the NOW...I'm still hung up on line graphs

I will echo others here, and state an interactive map would be helpful, and a "nearby" feature would be a reason for me to set controls to allow the app to see location data, which I suspect would increase the value of app downloads to BA.

I agree that uploading photos should not be dependent on using a hosting service. I would undoubtedly upload photos more if the app solved that, too.

I can and do use the site daily on my phone, but not running it through my browser would presumably increase stability and availability.

The BA website is nice, basic, and works well. An app with a more phone friendly interface would be nice. Plus the ability to add photos directly would be nice. Also like the recommendation some have made about a map interface to find beers or merchants more easily would be nice.

The mobile website works very well. If there is going to be an app, I would echo a few of the earlier comments on the need for a visually attractive and intuitive to use (and not overly complicated. For features, again echoing others' comments, ease of finding breweries and stores based on your location.

The wine app Vivino has the capability of using your phone's camera to take a picture of label and the app displays all the info on Vivino about that wine bottle. A similar feature would be awesome.

 At least we’re both thinking about fun new ways to use the data.

A BA app shouldn’t just be a repackaging of what already exists, IMO. If folks want more convenient beer ticking, a place for sharing what they’re drinking with friends and/or maps, there’s already a great app that does all that.

Why reinvent the wheel? Untappd has really nice search and tracking features, with an interactive map. Simply add a custom check-in feature to Untappd specifically for BA users, with a more BA-like user interface for ratings. Generate a composite rating and display the summary text in the normal Untappd user interface. And, ideally, cross-pollinate the Untappd and BA web sites with user check-ins from the other.
