Per Facebook, New Glarus is releasing a new IPA

"For years, fans of New Glarus Brewing have been asking when Brewmaster Dan Carey would make another American IPA, and the answer is now. New Glarus IPA clocks in at an assertive and drinkable 60 IBUs. Brewmaster Dan Carey searched fields of individual hop farms for this new beer, combining both old-school and emerging, experimental American hops along with a new German variety. The result is an unusual and unique hop profile.
Balanced dry hopping creates an elegant nose for this IPA and you can expect it to pour an intriguing golden blonde. Enjoy New Glarus IPA in moderation as it finishes at 15 degrees Plato and 6.75% ABV. This is Dan Carey’s riff on the American IPA tradition just for Wisconsin friends and neighbors."

It's been a while, but if I recall I was not a big fan of Scream. I'll certainly give the new one a try though.

Just curious: for those who thought the use of Diamant (?) in the pils was weird, what did you think of it?

I do think there is a touch of je ne sais quoi brightness in the pils, which if you were sensitive to, it could be distracting. It's fine for me though

For me, I am super sensitive to garlic/green onion in IPAs, if there's even a hint of it, it's a no for me dawg

    Grabbed the Pilsner.

Not bad at all. It's also not anything special though. It doesn't make up for cutting out Kid Kolsch for this year.

Funny. That was my opinion of Kid Kölsch.

I got a 12 pack of the Pilsner at Festival Foods in Portage. $14.99 on sale (regularly at $16.99). It is solid and I will be on the lookout for some more as this is a nice drinker.

That diamant hop adds a little something something like a harmony note laying over more traditional noble hops. It’s really subtle. 99.9% or customers won’t notice it. I’m sure a few on this platform will though, especially if they put it next to a really traditional euro pils like krombacher, Urquell, ect

I would like to try this next time I get over to Wisconsin. One of my favorite NG pilsners back in the day was NG Unplugged Bohemian Lager.

I thought their Pils was about as good as gets for a US made Pils..

Just listened to episode 37 of the NG podcast

    Takeaways

    1. New seasonal ipa. No caramel malt, designed to be different than moon man and scream. A mix of old school American hops and new experimental Hallertau hops. Wants it to smell like a dank forest. 6.75% ABV. Dan wanted to create an ipa with quick snappy bitterness that can make its presence known but retreat quickly

    2. He said they bought plenty of these hops so don’t be surprised if IPA returns in 2024

    3. A quick pilsner tangent happened at the end of the pod that mentioned how different Edel pils and NG Pils are. Dan said edel pils was inspired by a great pint of Budvar he had while in Germany. Budvar is all saaz hops and a double decoction mash. Dan didn’t say how closely the edel pils recipe followed the budvar recipe but we can assume it’s fairly similar.

I honestly preferred Scream back when it was a completely clear IPA; the last few I had were kinda hazy and muted some of the qualities I liked about Scream (and IIPA back in the day). I'm hoping this new IPA is a throwback.

Also, I just saw the current beer calendar on their IG, I'm excited for Enigma 23 in August (or whatever it was). A non-fruited sour brown should be pretty fun, as I liked Wild Sour Ale back in the day (still have some bottles, which I think have gone bad lol).

Not sure if Enigma 23 is the same recipe, but it always used to be one of my favorites from them. Glad to hear it’s returning.

Dan said that they brewed many many trial batches, with many different hop combos. He admitted they did a blind taste test of trial batches and the Citra/mosaic combo won 1 of the sensory tests. He elaborated though, that they just felt like the market has enough of that beer already, and they aimed to do something a bit different. Modern German hops and more old school American hops. I’m personally pretty excited for a 12pk

Yeah I loved that one as well. My tasting notes say the last one I had tasted like funky tart dollar store mac and cheese boiled in lacquer. Lol

I love NG, but the new ipa is a miss for me. I get a lot of diesel/fuel flavor, it's unpleasant to drink after a while.

I've gotten that sort of character from certain newer hop varietals -- I can't pinpoint which one(s) in particular, but yeah -- not the flavor for me.

I actually liked it personally, felt like it wasn't flashy but was just a solid go-to with a nice amount of bitterness for balance. The hop combo is nothing special imo, but that's almost a plus for me at this point.

Really just sounds like I should continue to reach for Moon Man when I want an old school Pale Ale.
