    I want to say 'no thanks' but I recall that chocolate-covered crickets have been marketed somewhere in the past, and I'd probably try them, so why not have crickets in beer too? You can drink the beer to wash down the chocolate-covered crickets. Yum! :grin:

    Okay, so it's not like they're putting crickets in the necks of Corona bottles or anything, just toasting crickets to use as a barley supplement in the production of porter. I hope they have a naming contest. What's Spanish for "Jumpin' Jiminy"? :laughing:

    Chapulines have long been a delicacy. I’m all for this. I’d just hope the beers are labeled for those of us who try to avoid eating animals.

    NO, no. They should put the obligatory cricket at the bottom of each bottle, like the worm in Mezcal.

    There’s quite a gap between something having a “similar taste to barley” and being a malt substitute in beer. The question isn’t, “Do I want to consume crickets?” … The question is, “Does yeast want to consume crickets?” :wink:

    Although, it seems like the crickets might be used as additional ingredient, more for adding a roasted flavor to enhance the malt rather than a fermentable addition or (dare I use the word?) an adjunct.

    Attention Homebrewers: Free ingredients.

    So, a few weeks back, I noticed every time I first entered the mud room, there was a Cave cricket on the floor. Well, some say they're Camel crickets. I don't know. They big and meaty.

    I see them in the cellar but the mud room was new. So I put some of them sticky traps down and after 2 days they looked like this.:astonished:

    Put new traps down and = Nothing. I wiped them out. Unless... they're smarter than I think. "Hey, Jiminy, stay away from them sticky things. Pass it on."

    Man, I tell ya - I'm just happy they don't chirp like standard crickets. I'd drive you mad.

    I'd definitely try it. The idea of a flavoring additive that delivers roasted malt flavors plus proteins (which I understand has some role in the final beer flavor or mouthfeel or something) but doesn't add additional fermentable sugars is interesting. Could it help create a more richly flavored dark beer that was still light bodied and lower abv?

    I'd be very surprised if some of the cartels didn't have investments or full ownership of some part of the malt supply chain in Mexico. They're all highly diversified, proficient in agricultural production, and highly skilled in post harvest processing and large scale logistical undertakings.

    Paging Benchtop's Chapulin Exchange... Or their Gusano Borracho

    I love chapulines... Salt and pepper or Mex Spiced especially. They're awesome. Better for you than potato chips and after a few beers you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.
