Is dank back?

I sure didn't think so.

 

I agree with the above post, there is just so much 'juice' on the shelves and craft beer taprooms that finding "dank" nowadays is like finding a needle in a haystack.

It certainly didn’t for me.

I am a Dankinator when it come to my hoppy beer selections.

 

Less galaxy and mosaic and more simcoe, chinook, Amarillo, CTZ, summit, cascade, citra, and centennial!

 

Never been my thing, so I can't say I missed places dialing that flavor profile back. I don't think it ever disappeared, but it went into hiding until the recent surge of supposed "West Coast" IPAs came around.

 

Personally I think "dank" and west-coast IPAs (WCIPAs) are exclusive entities. I've had plenty of NEIPAs that have a herbal or dank addition, but the bitter mouthfeel is what makes a WCIPA for me. I agree with the premise that dank flavors and WCIPAs are making a slight comeback, but I'm seeing more NIEPA with dank and herbal flavors (Sabro and Talus) and more WCIPAs (more bitter pine). The dankness can seem to add a unique flavor quality to NEIPAs. People have been making dank WCIPAs for a long time now. I think the overall trend is toward both of these, dank flavors in NEIPAs and WCIPAs, but not necessarily together.

 

I'm in the "it never went away" camp. I realize that there's lots of markets and they all will have varying access to styles and substyles, so I guess I'm just grateful rest it never went away in my area

 

In CA right now, hoping to find fresh Simtra, one of the dankest of the dank.

 

And there is “Juice” and then there’s the JUICE with a bunch of “natural flavors added” that tastes like cough syrup. Yuck

 

I don't think it ever went away but it fell out of favor a bit. I do think it's starting to make a comeback to a degree.

 

Does that make it Juicy Juice!?!

 

Fresh Torpedo Extra IPA has always been near when I needed to scratch that particular hop itch.

 

On average 3-4 out of every 10 IPAs I try qualify IMHO for being dank. Some more so than others. I find different types of dank: industrial, animal, food, plant-oriented. Here's one I had last night. 2 types of dank (dirty diesel & cheese funk) followed by sweet. Go figure. Rated world-class here. Cheers!
