Given the recent news, I figured it might be good to start an Anchor Lookout Thread. This way those of us who want it can find some fresh (as fresh as can be) Anchor beers in New England before they dry up completely.

My first online search showed it at (surprise) Total Wine in Burlington, MA. However the labels were the old kind. Not sure if Total Wine just didn't update the picture, or if it is in fact super old Anchor beer.

My other thought was to go to Downtown Wine and Spirits in Davis Square. They have a section in the back with incredibly old beer, but beer that can be aged. For example, Bigfoot, Brooklyn Monster Ale...etc. Even a 2008 Celebration Ale I think. There's a chance there might be some Our Special Ale and/or Old Foghorn there.

    Happy hunting!

    Cheers

I just flashed back to the early 90’s, hanging out at the homebrew shop and explaining to anyone that would listen just how important, and different, Anchor Steam Beer was. Cheers to many great years!

Started my craft journey in 2002.

Vivid memories of Anchor beers and the Christmas beer. My buddy had a huge vertical I might be able to dig up a picture of from many years back.

Unbelievable where craft beer has gone. It’s so impressive and scary at the same time. Makes me miss bottles to be honest.

I'll be keeping my eyes peeled in southern CT. Anyone seen any magnums lately? May be worth the nostalgia to finally pick one up.

Glad to hear Downtown is still throwing down, though.

I mean, the demise of a legacy brewery is sad on one level . . . but who was honestly buying their beer regularly??

They never adapted to the current market. I see more of this happening in the next few years.

Some more recent information in one of the main threads indicates Sapporo fucked them over badly.

I’m well aware of their Sapporo woes. Doesn’t change the fact that the average craft consumer’s purchasing habits simply changed.

Nostalgia in a heavily saturated craft market does not equal long term success.

Definitely. Not disagreeing, but I wonder if a company who had more intent on keeping them afloat bought them if they’d still be around, albeit with less distribution.

This quickly went from pulling back to Cali only to ceasing operations. Sierra Nevada had interest in buying them, so it wasn’t a completely depleted asset.

But you’re right, they didn’t adapt well with the times aside from producing IPAs. Even before Sapporo.

I've got a few magnums of 2022 Christmas I was planning to age. I plan on drinking one aging another and parting ways my third if you would be interested. I also have 1 6pk left as well

I needed to explain CaLiFoRnIa CoMmOn at a tasting about a year ago and it took me all day to find a packy down here that even carried it. The first couple of big box liquor stores didn't have it and the first couple that said they had it on Beer Menus also didn't have it. It was surprisingly difficult to find.

Interestingly enough the six pack was almost a year old and I'd have pegged them at 3 months old. Excellent shelf life. Forgive my regurgitation of the same tired old hat but what a shame that FOMO, new/local/IPA is better has done to the industry.

    Thanks, I’ll let you know!

So, who’s the asshole who went to all the Total Wines in MA and bought literally all the cases of Anchor yesterday?

Just went to Burlington’s…cleaned out. Went to Everett who had a ton on Wednesday…cleaned out. They said someone came in yesterday and bought five cases…

I grabbed some Steam today at Carl’s in Kittery. Plenty left around 5:30.

Went to Wegmans in Medford where there were multiple six packs of Steam Wednesday. All gone.

Kind of funny when they announced cutting distribution no one cared and scooped it up (including myself).

Found multiple Anchor variety packs (Steam, Cali Lager, Liberty, and Tropical) at Kappy's in Malden this past Sunday. Dated in December of 2022, but I think this is the last packaging date for this variety pack.

Good thing is they broke up one of the 12 packs into singles. Was able to snag a couple Liberty Ales (don't care it's December bottled, probably will never see this again). They even had one last six pack of Porter!

I didn't grab singles of the December bottled Steam though. Holding out hope I can find something fresher in a random liquor store (struck out completely multiple places though).

I also saw Alcove in Boston has Steam on tap according to their website. Might swing by for one last pint.

Fortune Bar in Amesbury had Steam on draft over the weekend. Had a few glasses & said goodbye to an old friend.

They have Steam bottled in March at Brick and Mortar in Cambridge. I was able to have one last bottle this past weekend.
