Absolutely! It's all but impossible to get the kids out of the water, there are some gorgeous reefs here and they are as excited as can be. Curious kids exploring is an absolute joy to watch.

This is the 44th NEW barleywine for me this year. It's still possible that I could hit 100!

I received this from @beergoot back in December as part of BIF 16. 2022 bourbon-barrel aged barleywine from Phantom Canyon Brewing in Colorado. One of only 72 bottles!! Aged for 3 months in Elijah Craig '14 year' barrels. Comes in at 10.5% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with almost no head. The nose is dominated by dark fruit, sweet toffee, and a hint of bourbon. A slight molasses note as well.

The taste is fantastic. The barrel stands out right away, which is surprising given that it was only aged for 3 months. Wow. Tons of toffee, bitter oak, slight vanilla, burnt brown sugar, and tons of malts. So smooth! Thanks, Dave!

    4.25/5

Do scotch ales have a place in here? Getting some (hopefully) very nice barrel aged ones today

Hi, Newbie to this place, but glad I found it.
Love Barley Wine and our micro brewery produces a very small batch of 300 or so bottles each year at 8.5% ABV. Not that I am promoting it for sale here, it sells very quickly when we release it at Christmas, but just thought some may be intrested that there are some out there who still love to make it. When we introduced the beer last Christmas, I have to say the vast majority of the locals living here in this area of the Highlands had not even heard of Barley Wine. Not really associated with this neck of the woods at all. Glad to say our introduction of the drink to this area has been met with some enthusiasm and a few converts.

A lot of people I mention it to have never heard of the style. How does that one taste at 8.5%? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one with that “low” of an abv

We like it, the flavour is strong enough to carry it and the ABV at the lower end of the spectrum to enable an extra one on an evening. Ours carries a deep treacle toffee/ liquorice flavour from the liberal use of crystal malts and plenty of residual sweetness at the expense of ABV as we mash quite low temp and short time for this type of brew.

Away from the Shire from Cherry St. Brewing. Barleywine aged in a blend of bourbon and brandy barrels. Comes in at 10.8% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with a thin layer of head. The nose is fantastic. Definitely picking up the brandy barrel here. Sweet toffee, plums, and raisin bread.

The taste is wonderful. Tons of brandy, bourbon, toffee, maple, brown sugar, and plums. Definitely on the sweet side, but it's not overdone. Lovely barleywine.

It definitely has been discussed a few times on here. The similarities are striking. I don't think we would kick you out if you posted a few

I definitely have a stack in the cellar (your generosity has played a large part in this!). I really have some work to do!

If the following counts as a "compelling case" then I have vastly underestimated my power of persuasion.:grin:

That can be a pretty typical strength for barley wine in the UK ( @Ewebrew is in Scotland).
(And don't forget that Bigfoot isn't much higher at 9.6%)

This was the compelling case I was referring to, Barley wine has plenty of room under the umbrella. Not referencing Scotch ale specifically, but I thought the sentiment applied.:beers:

‘Mighty’ from Tree House. Have one more to try and age, and two of the ‘oaked’ version. This is pretty good. Bigfoot with a richer, less TIPA profile

How's that? We don't get any Mothership stuff out here, sadly.
