Well after a touch of digging I did not see one of these and after having a particular porter in mind for over a week now, thought - "why not?"

    Wasatch - Polygamy Porter

Yes, it's a fairly 'okay' rated porter here on BA and certainly no Black Butte, but for whatever reason it has been on the mind and pestering me.

First off I saw this beer on a 'offensive beer list' a while back. Is it offensive? Perhaps. I think it's more satirical, and coming from descendants of Utah pioneers (Mormon and more-than-likely polygamist) I think it's a hilarious and needed jab at the culture, and taking into consideration it's nearly nationwide distributed is even better

But onto the specifics of the beer.

    Best by 9.18.23

Purchased refrigerated at a grocery store for about $1.50

Poured at fridge temp into a weizen glass.

Pours a deep chestnut nearly coffee brown/black with an aggressive head that settles into a thin ring and cap. 4

Off the can I get some bitter but sweetened coffee, can tell the caramel is there but chocolate is lost. Followed by a fairly roasty after-note. Off the glass is similar but heavier on the roastiness. 4

Bitter coffee and astringent forward, which gives way to a slight earthy hop bite. Chocolate is dark and bitter similar to a heavy cacao Ghirardelli bar. After a lingering of that a soft sweet aftertaste finishes out very softly. 3.5

Body is fairly light, and I'm sure much better than it's 4% predecessor. Moderately carbonated that goes down smooth and pleasantly. 3.75

Overall, I definitely expected more caramel and chocolate, but was met with more roasty coffee and hops. While not out-of-this-world, it does represent the style fairly in my opinion.
It aspires to be a Black Butte and it's certainly not my favorite porter (shout out to Melvin - Scenario) I wasn't disappointed by my sought after consumption or experience. 3.75

So let it begin, I want to hear your likes, dislikes, reviews and commentary on this great style of dark beer.

    Cheers!

I've been drinking a boatload of PCT Porter from Crux brewing. It's an excellent beer, smooth and rich with flavors of milk chocolate, whole grain bread, a touch of toasted crust. Wonderful in the middle of a cold cold snap or with lunch on a hot work day. It may beat out black Butte in my book, but it's close

I went to a couple of stores earlier today hoping to buy Anchor Porter but so far no luck. If I do luck out and find some Anchor Porter I will be back.

    Cheers!

This is one of my favorite annual porter releases, and has held up well since the November 30, 2023, with the coffee not dropping a lick. Highly recommend each Fall.

Went out Black Butte hunting with no luck but some fresh Fresh Squeezed, and SN Fan Favorites, were a nice consolation.

I have a store or two more to check in the coming weeks. It’s been due for a revisit.

Had a can of Mayflower Porter with chowder and fried clams at some joint in Plymouth, MA this past weekend. It did not suck.

Wish I could find a quality porter out my way, everything on shelves are the usual suspects of the IPA/DIPA/Pastry Stout/Sour quagmire and something like a porter gets pushed off into oblivion.

I couldn't buy a porter even if I wanted to right now without travelling out of state - and that's a definite disgrace.

Haven’t had it in years but I remember drinking this maybe a decade ago and thinking wow this is really special stuff. Ditto for founders porter, which I can find but usually not in date

Isn’t Mayflower Porter available to you?

According to the brewery’s website: “Need help finding our beers? We service all of New England.”

    https://www.mayflowerbrewing.com/connect/distributors/

    Cheers!

P.S. If it is not a regularly stocked product at your local beer retailer(s) perhaps you could request they special order it for you?

I tried that one albeit a few years ago and I don't remember being super impressed by it. Maybe I will get a single and give it another try.
