    Hello all,
I will be in Vienna for two nights & five nights in Budapest beginning July 25.

Any suggestions regarding good beer spots for either location would be greatly appreciated, (I wasn't seeing any current information for either place in the forums). Thank you!

Thanks for asking this question, I'll be in both of these towns with my wife in September, so I'll follow along with responses here.

I’m in Budapest right now, and there are a few spots I like.

    Bottle shops:
    - Csak a Jó Sör, as mentioned. You can have a beer here, as well.
    - BeerSelection. Same thing - good bottle shop with on-premise consumption as well.

    Beer bars:
    - Legfelsőbb Beeróság. A few taps and tons of bottles.
    - Hops Beer Bar. Same thing - a few taps and lots of bottles.

    Breweries:
    - Parabolic Lázárus. Good beer, fun taproom, right near the middle of the city.
    - Gravity Brewing. Interesting beers (the red was one of my favorite all-time for the style), cool but small taproom.
    - Ruin Brew. They only have like 4-ish beers, but it’s a little slice of America in there if you get homesick.

All of this is not to say there’s anything wrong with the other recommendations — I just haven’t been those places yet.

Lastly, if you come across anything from Brew Your Mind brewery in a bar or bottle shop, do yourself a favor and drink it

I will add I tried Madhouse by Mad Scientist last night and enjoyed it, a bistro that acts as the ‘tasting room’ for Mad Scientist.

Seconding the Brew Your Mind suggestion, tried their IPA, Still Dreaming at HOPS BEER BAR, and thought it was excellent. Drinking a Bright Lies from them right now and also very happy. The bartender at Hops Beer said he felt they were the best Hungarian brewery. Also this was my second time at Hops and they have an amazing selection of bottles / cans, a mix of Hungarian and European. Have not tried but got to go another Hungarian brewery, Horizont and a Pohjala, as I couldn’t resist. Could have easily picked ap another few, oh but not cheep.

My only other stop was at Legfelsőbb Beeróság, great space, my wife digged it (vs Hops which said had a bit a male vibe). Similar to Hops, small tap list and large bottle/can list. I assume primarily Hungarian but did not confirm, as I was only able to stay for a short visit.

In the perspective of this short day and a half in Budapest, also still feeling good about Madhouse.

Also un-beer related, I suggest visiting a thermal bath, did Gellert this time, beautiful space, though the Turkish bath I visited previously might be my favorite.

moving on a smaller town, Komarom. I Won’t report back unless the beer availability has changed there.

    Cheers

After my last post, I rode the bus down to Szekszárd, the town where Brew Your Mind is located, so I could drink the beer from the source. To a beer guy like me, totally worth two hours each way on the bus

Hello all, I am following up on my time in Vienna. I made it to Ammutson this evening & I have to say, what a first rate craft beer bar! I would highly recommend a visit, if ever in Vienna.

The bar is located on a quiet side street about 1 mile from the city center, (easy walk).

The draft selection isn't massive, 12 rotating taps of well selected European beers, (first beer on the list was Cantillon 100% Lambic) Aus, Spain, Swiss, Croatia & Hungry represented at the moment, (a ticker posts upcoming beers from various locations). Someone does their homework w/ these draft selections! The beers were fresh & in excellent condition. Also, there is a very good bottle selection, several Cantillon bottles to choose from along w/ many other European craft beer.

Service was outstanding. One gal working when the bar opened & she handled the crowd as it grew to 20+ people. A second bartender arrived an hour later & didn't miss a step.

Overall, an outstanding beer experience! I love it when these things come together:grin:!

Off to Slovakia & Hungry over the next several days. I will report back, cheers!

In the unlikely event you find your self in Komarno (the Slovakian side of Komarom, Hungary), there is a shop called the Gentleman's Beer Shop, seemed to be heavy on Czech beers, but some new school stuff too. I found that the markets, Tesco on the Slovak side - had a terrible selection where as the Tesco and Spar on the Hungarian side at least offered a wide variety of tickable beers.

I just returned to the states from my work trip to Austria/Slovakia/Hungry.
I touched on Vienna in a post above.

Slovakia & Budapest were interesting & enjoyable locations. We were in Trnava Slovakia for 2 nights. The Trnava beer scene is dominated by Czech Republic Pilsner Urquell, unfiltered & straight from the tank. All of the restaurants we visited provided proper & fresh pours for this fine beer!
Trnava also has the Sessler brewery. The brewery has a nice beer garden in a park like setting in the city's industrial area on the edge of town. The beers were decent, but nothing mind blowing, (their Czech dark lager was by far the best beer of the bunch). Overall, Trnava was a nice relatively small town with great food, coffee & beer.

From Slovakia we moved on to Budapest for five nights. On the first free day, I made my way to the Mad Garden Buda. The beer garden is an offsite location of the Mad Scientist Brewery.
Due to the off the beaten path location, this is defiantly not a popular tourist destination. But for a beer geek, it is well worth the adventure. A twenty minute train ride out of the city to District 10 Buda & a 20 minute GPS guided walk puts you near the location, I say near the location b/c Google Maps leaves you hanging a little. If you decide to visit, don't get discouraged by where GPS leads you, the brewery is on the backside of the building in a neighborhood setting, (just walk around to the back of the building & the garden entrance is there). There were 12 draft selections, (a wide range of ales & lagers) of which I sampled four. All the beers were very good and the service was first rate. Credit card & Hungarian Forints accepted, Euros not.

From there I returned to the city center to visit Jonas Kezmuves Sorhaz, (recommendation from @Redrover above). Unfortunately, this establishment is no more, (maybe a COVID victim). Too bad, it looked like it was a nice place.

Work kept me busy for the next 3 days, but I was able to breakaway the last afternoon & visit two other recommended locations, Gravity Brewery & CSAP SZEK bar (both within couple blocks of each other & well worth a visit to each). There were 14 draft beers available at Gravity. I had the Helles, Rye red & Imperial raspberry smoked porter. All three beers were outstanding. The Helles was one of the best I've ever had & I agree with @flagmantho ...the rye red was unique and fantastic.

A short walk from Gravity took me to a busy pedestrian street, lined with bars & restaurants, including CSAP SZEK craft beer bar. This is a true craft beer bar serving only beer from independent Hungarian breweries. Once again I took the advice of @flagmantho & drank the APA from Brew Your Mind Brewery. Wow, what an amazing mango forward APA, this beer was absolutely delicious. I only wish they would have had other beers from this brewery. My next beer was an Altbeer from a one man contract brewer in Budapest, Tacet Brewery, a very nice beer, true to the style. I had to finish my session with a return to the Brew Your Mind APA, then back to the hotel for the night.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to visit the other recommended locations, but I expect to be back within a year & will try the missed locations at that time & maybe sneak back & revisit these great bars & breweries!

Budapest is an awesome beer city and everything is within walking distance or an easy train ride away. Thanks for the great recommendations!

I'm glad you enjoyed Budapest! Isn't Brew Your Mind great? I managed to miss Csapszék but I'll put it on the list for next time

Curious, was the Jonas Kezmuves Sorhaz you tried to visit in Bikas Park, on the Buda side? When I looked it up previously it appeared to have moved there, not sure if google maps is out of date.

It was in the same spot on the river. I was able to look through the window & saw the sacked operation. Too bad, it’s a very nice area & would have been a great spot to enjoy a beer by the river!

I wasn’t aware of a new location. The spot I checked out was on the Pest side. Nothing I read directed me to the Buda side. Thanks for the information. Something to add for the next trip, cheers!

Hello all, I'm headed back to Budapest tomorrow for a week of work. I will definitely be visiting Gravity Brewery & CSAP SZEK beer bar again (very close to each other).

I will go back through the recommendations in this thread & try to visit the other spots, including Jonas Kezmuves Sorhaz, ( I found the new location) & Parabolic Lázárus Brewery.

Let me know if there are any new/old places to check out. Thanks!
