Hacker Pschorr Münchner Gold -- 5.5 ABV
    [IMG]

    L -- Clear, bright gold with a firm, long-lasting white head 4.5

S -- Herbal hops and light bready malts. 3.75

T -- Mellow, lightly sweet bready malts with herbal hops in balance in both flavor and bitterness. 4.0

    F -- Mouthfeel is soft to crisp with a medium-light body. 4.25

O -- While I like a little more bready melanoidin character in a Helles, the pleasing drinkability and quenching satisfaction from this beer highlights why the style is brewed. Noch einmal Hell bitte! 4.5

Krombacher Hell. Found on sale at a local grocer at a pretty decent, $7 per 4-pack price. Best by 11-4-24 (one'a them). 5.0 ABV.

L -- Clear, deep gold with a firm, sticky long-lasting white head 4.5

S -- Light DMS, herbal hops, light citrus or mineral note. 3.75

T -- Herbal hops and mineral water up front. Lightly doughy malts back. Bitter, herbal hops in the finish and aftertaste. 3.5

F -- Mouthfeel is soft to lightly dry with a medium-light body. 4.25

O -- A Helles from Nordland? what to expect, but a pretty decent Dortmund, no? It's a very drinkable, quenching beer, but too hoppy and mineral in character for a good Munich Helles. But if you like Dortmunder Bier -- this is for you! 3.75

Local Hero, a "Modern Helles" from German brewer Crew Republic (5%).

Does exactly what it says on the tin. A fairly modern, hoppy Helles that goes down easy. Pretty nice one.

Tooting my horn for my local German-inspired brewery, Territorial Brewing. This beer just came on about 3-4 weeks ago, so it's fresh. However, it used to be a 5.7% abv beer, and I think the flavor from has suffered as a result. It's still a tasty beer, but I lowered my BA rating from 4.25 to 4.0.

5.3 is better for a Helles. Maybe they need to tweak the recipe a little more so they aren't relying on ABV for their character.

Yeah, after thinking about it a bit more while drinking it I think a tweak is needed. The beer is now a bit unbalanced after the last change and the hops are now masking some of that good malt flavor. The former version was like a mini maibock, and you know how I love my maibocks.

One of my favorite Helles and they're brewing one of my favorite Pils. Really cool to see this beer makes it to the US. Prost!

What, no love for Hofbrau Original? That was my desert island beer for a while and a great helles. But all of these look great to me and I’d love to spend a summer working through each of them. Prost!
