Happy Saturday, BA, whether you're sound asleep, just rising, or well into the evening!

This is Airwhale Hell from Anchorage Brewing Company in Alaska. The bottle has journeyed halfway across the world to my back deck, and it's being drunk on an Alaska-like, cold, wintery afternoon here in Oz. A lowering grey sky is sprinkling misty rain on our wet, waterlogged lawn. Footy is being played in the mud, and thoughts of Spring seem like far-fetched delusions of warmed, comfortable grandeur. This is a beer meant for this moment.

But you'd think I'd know better by now than to be drinking big, adjuncted Russian Imperial Stouts. You'd think I know that these beers annoy me with their cloying sweetness and over-the-top alcohol bill. You'd think so... But it's Groundhog Day, and I'm about to enter Old Man Yelling at Cloud (TM) territory...

It's a very nice beer; balanced, showcasing an unusual ingredient (Thai bananas), never hitting cloying territory, and not a chore to get through as some of these beers can be. So then why does it need to be 15%? Is the alcohol balancing the sweetness, keeping it this side of the cloy line? Is the alcohol giving the beer the kick it needs to go from novelty, sweet, adjuncted RIS to something I'd consider having again? I don't know, but I can't imagine the beer being too different at 10% compared to 15%. It warms me up. It allows me to sit outside while the sky fades from dull grey to brilliant black. But it annoys me! Why so bloody strong?

This single beer takes up 45% of the Australian weekly alcohol consumption guidelines in one 375ml (12.7Oz) package. Is that necessary? 49-year-old AzfromOz says no. 25-year-old AzfromOz might have begged to differ, but 25-year-old AzfromOz wouldn't have been able to afford this beer anyway! Ultimately it gets a decent score because it's a nice beer, and it might be a nice beer because it's so strong. But I wish it didn't need to be.

    Cheers!

Good day Az, thanks for starting today’s thread.

Nice little rant about the apparent “necessity” of some breweries to brew super high ABV beers, be it stouts, tripel IPAs. Personally I can drink and stomach them but my preferred ABV range still is between 7 to 10%.

Drinking La trappe Tripel, which peaks at just 8% and I don’t need really something stronger ATM.

    Cheers!

[IMG] Happy Saturday all. Kind of a long story, but still worth telling. My Mom’s Aunt and Uncle owned a store that was known for its meat many years ago. That store is now Kettlehead and on the bottom of this can it says Ode To DeRoy’s Market. My Mom is a DeRoy. Cheers all.

Nice presentation and an interesting opinion that has me thinking about the draw for high ABV brews. For me, it’s mostly about keeping the volume down…more beer at less ABV is usually more bathroom trips. If I’m drinking at night, a sipper beer seems the way to go. The other part is the look of horror / admiration from human ABV beer drinkers when you share something that’s triple their normal drink. $0.02

P.S. …and the flavor and mouthfeel on the high ABV are “usually” more satisfying. If a lower ABV has bold flavor and an “appropriate” mouthfeel for the style, I’m in.

That's why I'm a day drinker. My 15 trips to the toilet after one beer are well and truly in the rearview mirror by the time I'm heading to bed!

    Cheers!
