Greece is not a country that comes up very often when discussing craft beer, but truth be said the scene has exploded in recent years with a lot of breweries popping up around the country, including some of the most remote and tiny of islands. To me this is fascinating and worth some exploring.

I have therefore decided to spend as much of my vacation in the country exploring the local craft beers. While I do not intend to travel a lot within the country while stationed here, I have nonetheless managed to procure a plethora of beers from all around the country, via an online service called Beer24.gr. Furthermore, I plan to join a Beer Fest, hosted in Greece’s 2nd biggest city (Thessaloniki), with over 30 participating breweries (from some of the biggest Independent craft producers to some nano breweries ran by a couple of dudes).

Valia Calda (Ioannina, Epirus Region). This is a brewery from the insanely underrated Greek city of Ioannina. The region that this city is the capital of is not very well known to foreigners as it’s mostly mountainous (Alpine) and does not scream of your typical Greece. This beer (whose name means Warm Valley in the local Vlach dialect) is the flagship lager of this brewery.

Back from a gravel ride on this sunny Sunday. Managed to kiss the ground once and met some friends. 8)

Post bike ride beers are the best. Cheers!

    Hey folks,
Sippin on an N/A Guinness Zero this morning, nursing my cramps and ego.

Yesterday did not go according to anyone's plan. Higher DNF (did not finish) rate than usual for Leadville 100, where in a good year half of all starters finish under 30 hours, but heat, dehydration, and then diarrhea leading to horrific, crippling abductor (???!!!) cramps took me out right after the turn-around in Winfield, about mile 50-51. Tried to rally with banana, salt tabs, electrolytes, nothing doing and I spent the next 2-3 hours just wracked with pain and more cramping. Never felt anything like it. Twice the cramping just knocked me right over and I couldn't stand for minutes... Oof.

So it is what it is - planned well, trained like hell, but sometimes things don't go to plan even when you're doing everything right (I drank 3 flasks every 3-4 hours which is a lot for me), stayed on top of food (350-400 cals an hour), made all cut-offs, but yeah.... poop happened (4 times).

Hope your day is better than mine, less sore, and a little less stupid.

UPSIDE? I can have beer today! I'll tune in later!

    Cheers...

Haven’t had too many craft in Crete last year, but SOLO was by a mile the best brewery and beers to be found there.

Nothing wrong either with Fix dark lager, Mythos etc.

Dude, I know it didn't go as you planned but just by standing at the starting line of a 100 mile race, running, you won! The percentage of the population that has the mental stamina to even go there is miniscule. That race is a monster with about 14,000 feet vertical and a peak altitude of 12,600 at Hope Pass is no joke. Relax, recover and replan.....cheers!!!

Thanks Vann - yeah, it's tough. This one had my number early even WITH doing everything right yesterday. Never had cramping like that, just thrown-to-the side kind of pain. Glad I gave it a 2nd shot but not sure... that the LT100 is for me. 100k and below? Yeah... Cheers!

    G'day all!

I'm drinking the only Lambic that I've seen locally; we used to get quite a few. This is a 2014 bottling and is pretty darn amazing.

    Prost!

Good day BAs! Off to a decent start to the day - My groundhog Brandine (formally the groundhog known as Brando) was out at 0745 eating apples in my back yard and the sun is sort of shining. Today will be spent cleaning turtle tanks and bottling beer as we prepare for our trip to New England so my wife can buy more fabric for her collection (The quilter with the most fabric when they die, WINS!) Back to VT, NH, ME, MA, NY (gotta drive through it), and maybe CT. I just gotta decide what books I'll be reading while I wait in the car - some Nabokov for sure, maybe some "James S. A. Corey", maybe some Komunyakaa, and Upton Sinclair. I just hope I can find some good beer along the way.

    Today's New Breakfast Beer is Froggy's Seventh Heaven, a Rare Beer Club selection from Hoppin' Frog;

This is a "Belgian Strong Dark Ale" style, a bit of an unusual exploration from the Frog. To my taste, this follows the general pathway of the style, but isn't special. Rating 4.15, rDev -2.8%.

Happy Sunday BA's! Thanks @The_Kriek_Freak for opening the bar in Greece. Those are beers you don't normally see here.
    Your meal looks delicious @Shanex.

I've read five or six Expanse novels but it's been several years. I may have to pick them up again. I always enjoy that he doesn't ignore physics during space travel.

It was, went to this place with a relative and pizza certainly wasn’t an option for me even in the shades.

Carpaccio, beef or any other products is ideal in this heat. Couldn’t even finish those fries either.

4 "Expanse" down, 5 to go (Unless the next two don't get better - less whiney!)
