It's a bold statement, but from what I've had from them, it could well be true.

    Good afternoon NBW
I only found one new oktoberfest beer in my travels of Indiana this last week.
    Mad Anthony's Oktoberfest

16oz undated can poured into a mug at fridge temp 5.5% ABV 22 IBU per can. The beer pours mostly bright light copper in color with khaki colored head. The head disappears quickly leaving a pencil thin ring and a handful of tiny scattered bubbles. No lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength featuring caramel and toasted malt. The taste is semisweet caramel & toasted malt, slightly nutty and mildly bitter. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a semi dry finish. Not super clean or crisp, but drinkable. Overall, ok for an Americanized Oktoberfest.

    Cheers all!

Morning, fellow NBWers, on this potentially New Beer Sunday.

I say potentially, because I'm not sure I've got it in me to make a run up the hill for some new beer today.

Right now, the wilds of Spokanistan are burning down. While I'm close enough to downtown Spokane to where I don't have to worry about being rendered homeless by fire, the air quality is currently amongst the worst in the world.
Yesterday , if it weren't for the fires, I would have been posting some beers from a brewery that is new to me that's up around Green Bluff. Some friends and I had decided we were going to drive up there, get some peaches from one of the various you pick farms there, and then visit Wildland Collective, a nanobrewery that has some connection to Townsend Cellars, a popular local winery. Unfortunately, between the smoke and the fact that the Oregon Rd fire, a little ways to the north of there, was 0% contained, we figured we'd best scrub those plans.

It's as bad as I've ever seen it here, having lived here since the mid-90s.
Here's something taken by a passenger flying into GEG Friday night. That's the town of Medical Lake below them:

That’s the other one I was going to mention (F-W) as the tippity top of barrel programs, then Central Waters just a smidge below those two.

With lunch made after a morning taking the kids for a bike ride, I’m cracking open this beast as I look to relax for an hour or so, before figuring out something to do for the rest of the afternoon.

The is Private Press Rings of Splendor, an imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels.

(side note: I love the vintage LP sleeve look of Private Press labels).

Pours a thick oily black with very minimal head that dissipates to barely a ring around the edge of the glass in seconds. No lacing.

Strong aromas of stewed stone fruits jump out first. Burnt sugar. A hint of dry wood with an even lesser hint of bourbon.

The taste has those stewed stone fruits in abundance. Also char, brown sugar and a little vanilla. The bourbon that isn’t strong in the nose comes through more forcefully on the tongue. Despite the 12.3% ABV, this beer is in no way boozy.

Thick, slightly oily body. Light bitter finish. Highly drinkable for such a big beer.

My limited experience with Private Press has been nothing but excellent. If I lived closer, I’d make every effort to get a membership. Great stuff!

    Cheers!

    Thanks!
My situation is much better than the people who have lost homes, as I'm practically downtown in a city of around a quarter mil, but I am also an asthmatic, so the smokey air is kind of an ass kicker for me.

Wasn't sure I was going to have time for a new beer write-up today, but managed to squeeze it in. And thanks for posting @woemad, sure helps keep everything in perspective.

It's another new Jack's Abby beer for me today. With how many new or new-to-me beers they have been putting out with their pilot line, plus how few beers I drink in a week, all my new beers may be from JA for a while. And with how good their recent stuff has been, it's a nice situation to be in.

    Brite as Hell
    5% Helles

Pours a bright gold with a two-finger white head that dissipates to a merrangue-like quarter finger and then down to a coating.

Aromas of white bread, malt sweetness, and a background of nearly-hidden floral hops that become more pronounced as it warms.

The taste starts off with cracker and white bread, adds a bit of honey in the middle, and then wraps things up with the return of those floral hops, which also bring some bitterness. On the finish, the hops come to the fore with some spice in addition to the floral notes. They linger on the aftertaste with some dryness leaving you ready for the next sip. The flavors are subtle yet distinct; nothing overdone, every in balance.

Fine but pretty high carbonation leads to a lager that dances on your tongue on the start of the sip, but without carb burn. Light-bodied and really refreshing.

Overall, another great pale lager from JA. I don't particularly like their House Lager, for whatever reason it just doesnt sit well on my palate, but I could drink this helles all day. They continue to impress with their small batch program.

Another outstanding Sante Adairius Rustic Ales beer sent my way by @Dimidiata. This is "Four Legs Good", a "Blond Quad", and it's fantastic.
Beautiful, bright golden color. Small amount of short-lived head receding to a thin ring and spotty cap. Aroma is tart, with apples, oak and some funk.

Taste is similar to the nose, with an earthy, apple funk and perfect notes from the oak to round things out. Not at all tart (although my palate is adjusted to such things). Very light tasting. The 9.9% is remarkably well hidden.

    Overall, this is excellent.

My wife purchased a 12-pack of Burlington Beer Co.'s Lighthouse Pilsner.
Poured from a 12oz undated can to a Pils glass at fridge temp.
The appearance checks off the Pilsner boxes, light gold color, continuous nucleation and a 3-finger head of tiny white bubbles. Lacing is medium.
A sniff says french baguette and lemongrass.
The taste is balanced in that this is not super “crisp”. It's maltier than most Pilsners, but hops show well after the swallow.
The mouthfeel is light with a slight oiliness. Carbonation is about right.
    A moderate to good Pilsner.

Hair of The Dog Brewing Co. -- Don (2023)

Poured a clear yet very dark purplish-brown color, opaque in the glass; no head. Outstanding aroma; charred grains and wood, cherries and plum, tobacco juice, leather. The taste amplifies the aroma; rich, earthy sweetness; cocoa and bitter chocolate, dark brown sugar; dried raisins and sweet figs; black licorice and anise; boozy undercurrent. Heavy body, smooth and sludgy of the palate; moderate sense of alcohol warmth counterbalances the sweetness.

Man alive! This is one fine beer!! It's non-carbonated by design, so there is no head per se, yet the pouring color is dark, deep and alluring, Everything improves from there. The taste and mouthfeel are dense and complex on the palate. The 17% ABV, while not hidden, certainly seems integrated in a fantastic way with the rest of the flavors and mouthfeel characteristics. I will be cellaring a couple of these to see how they age (and I'm thinking the beers will age gracefully).

...for some reason, I'm not feeling all that bad about ordering more Don (2022 and 2023) yesterday...:sunglasses:

Drekker/Look's collab Coffin Flop DNEIPA, 8.2% ABV. Pours hazy pale gold with a 1.5 finger white head that left some foamy lacing. Aroma is citrus. Taste follows plus pine, juicy and sweet, slight bitterness. Decent juicy mouthfeel, slightly dry close. Overall excellent.

I hear you. We planned our summer around my wife’s work schedule. Then she got two unexpected teaching contracts; one at the University she does some sessional work for and another at a college she has wanted to get working at for a few years now. Because of her other jobs, she’s ended up working 6-7 days a week since late May. No one is complaining though. She’ll end up clearing almost double what she has ever made before in her life. It’s great and will lead into more sustained contracts going forward. But, we had planned a few weeks at home with the kids together that ended up just being me. The kids have had about enough of my bad jokes and rehashed activities.

They are back at camp next week (phew), and then off again for one week before school starts back up. I’m hoping I have one more week in me!

    Cheers!

Man this brings back fond memories. A couple years ago a local packie had 4 packs of Tessellation at 4.99 per. Not sure why, they were all fresh. I must’ve drank through a case. Went back for a final stock up and they were finally all out. Definitely a great beer!

I got the four legged freaks red wine ba quad. Amazing stuff. Aromas and flavors of big raisin, plum, fig, date, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, red wine, oak, toast, biscuit, nutty; light molasses, chocolate, diacetyl, peppercorn, pine, herbal, grass, yeast earthiness. Light peppery yeast spiciness, herbal bitterness, and yeast/oak tannin tang in the finish. Medium carbonation and med full body. Very creamy silky feel. Light lingering sticky hop and oak tannin drying. Super smooth finish, no cloying sweetness, mild warmth and booze of 12.2% after the finish. Incredibly balanced, complex, and not too heavy on body. Spot on style. 4.35

Alright, after a lackluster showing yesterday, I'm back with some more promising beers today. First up is Sierra Nevada x Kehrwieder Brewery Oktoberfest Festbier (2023)

Pours a lovely vibrant golden color. Crystal clear and lightly effervescent. Thick three finger sudsy white head forms on the beer, lingers a bit, then dissipates leaving no residual head. Aroma has notes of bready, rich malts and a hint of toasted malt - @GuyFawkes referred to it as toasted oats and I think that's spot on. The are pretty varied on the nose - notes of grassy, spicy hops come through, but there is also a certain lightly fruity hop note coming through. Clearly the result of the variety of hops used in this beer.

Taste has notes of bready malts, some lightly toasted malt and honey. The hops bring some more traditional spicy, herbal, grassy notes, but then you get some light mango and grapefruit notes - subtle, but still, there. Its interesting - unique, but not at all in a bad way. Feel is medium bodied, smooth, easy drinking. Bright carbonation.

Overall its a nice spin on a festbier from Sierra Nevada and Kehrwieder. Maintains enough tradition to be recognizable, while incorporating some unique modern touches to make it a bit more unique. I bought a twelve back and will happily finish it off. Most importantly, I'm just so happy Sierra Nevada is back to doing these oktoberfest collabs.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25 = 4.15 (rDev +3.2%)
