So far in my limited number of seasons it's typically late August or early September for me at 3900' elevation in western NC. I think it's more dependent on the maturity of the ones than a specific date. If, when you squeeze them, they're crunchy and paper-like and spring back to shape, and they're starting to brown on the edges, they're probably ready or darned close.

Our Cascades are 2yrs old and we are bout to pick the 2nd growth of hop cones. It has been a really good growing season here in East Tennessee. The Prussian bine quit growing and the Hartwick hasn’t produced any cones. The Mt. Hood bine grew well and has some cones ready. All these are in their first year. I bout 2 Vista hop plants at the beginning of August. They are starting to grow up the fence. The goal is for them to survive winter and maybe make some cones next year. They will be for lager brews only. [IMG] [IMG]

Thanks, plus they put off a lot of shade for the maters and flowers. We brewed an IPA with the first hops a few weeks ago and it’s carbonating right now. Can’t wait to tear into it. Tasting some samples at kegging and it had a big melon aroma. I would have thought it would be more citrus when picking the hops but it’s big time melon.

We harvested the 2nd round Cascade and first hops of the Mt. Hood. We have 6oz dried Cascade and 1.5oz Mt. Hood. Now I have to figure out what to brew with them. Any ideas out there?[IMG]

Sounds like a great old school East Coast IPA. 2 row, some Munich and c-40, low ester English yeast, bitter with something with some character (Columbus or Chinook), use 3oz of the Cascade for dry hop after yeast drops, split the rest of the Cascade and the Mt. Hood between 10 minutes and FO.OG 1.060, aim for 50-60 IBUs

Finished my harvest. Dry May then return of rain gave the plants energy I guess.
Not up to past yields, but decent. Was surprised by my Sterling plants which usually give next to nothing or some small cones and was thinking of getting rid of them after this year. They actually produced some large cones after many years.

And it’s official, Gorm hop yard completely destroyed this year by drouth, over saturated ground, hailstones and finally disease.
No fresh hop ale this year. Same for the foundry hops but,,,, I got plenty from last year. Freezer needed cleaning anyways.

hope everybody else has a good season.

I harvested about 1/5 less Cascade than last year but it’s better than nothing. Brewing up a Cascade hopped Belgian pale today with aged and fresh hops.

Yeah, that stinks. I'm sure the drought and excess rain really stressed the plants. Do you know what disease was the final nail, and are you optimistic they'll come back next spring?

It was just a tad too early to pick mine when I left NC last Saturday, and I hope it's not a tad too late when I get back this coming Sunday.

Botritis is the culprit and all the hail damage was an easy way for it to spread and fast. Might be some mildew thrown in there as well.

sure, they will be back a long with some new goldings and fuggles.

if similar weather comes next year, doubt it, I will have to up my spraying schedual to get a mature crop.
    Hope your harvest is excellent

2.3 oz Cascade, 13.7 oz Goldings, all weighed wet
    [IMG]

Has anyone seen this before? It was on about a dozen of the Goldings. A few had tiny regular hops leaves peeking out from between the cone bracts. First time I've noticed it.

@riptorn, I’m not sure if mine are like that. But growing hops is new to me.
