    from last night:

CW 2-year aged bourbon barrel barleywine

been a bit since i’ve had the 1-year (“regular”) brewers reserve bourbon barrel barleywine. this one was more bourbon forward (that’s probably obvious) and less hop-forward with a thicker, stickers mouthfeel. very good barleywine. cheers!!

Yeah, my initial comparison to §ucaba the other day turned out to be off the mark. It wasn’t a drain pour but it was not as good as I’d hoped (this became more evident as the glass warmed). I’m pretty sure I kept this bottle refrigerated for most of its life so that probably helped compared to a bottle sitting for years at room temp. To be fair, the label does say “best enjoyed fresh,” I just never saw that before I opened it—but for a barleywine, that disclaimer in itself might be considered something of a red flag.

Grabbed this can up in Alberta to revisit. Perepllut from Blindman Brewing. A wonderful barleywine without anything added. It says on the can that this will age gracefully for many years. I will have to try this experiment.

Malts, toffee, very slight citrus, oak, honey, figs, and raisins. Really smooth, with almost no alcohol heat. A nice nutty flavor comes through as it warms. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is a slight mix of bitter citrus peel, a touch of leather, and sweet toffee. Such a great beer.

Having this beauty courtesy of @CarolinaCardinals , All That You Desire But Only For a Moment from Burial. Thanks much Tom!

This is magnificent, like a very decadent dessert. Rich, creme brulee like charred brown sugar, a potent date note, and some sort of sweet bourbon cocktail dominate this one. At the edges are nice role-playing notes of vanilla, light cocoa, and caramel. Quite a treat!

Hey Tom, should we get into those Varsity's soon?

Yeah, I don’t know why Transient isn’t all over these threads. @HIGHPA got me hooked on them, but this batch is from Tavour. This Bubba blend is spectacular. No f’ing around with oddball stuff. Bourbon maple BLiS barrel and Elijah Craig barrel rule the flavor profile. Hot alcohol burn.

Much better than the scotch barrel aged version. That one was like eating a handful of raw peat. Not sure how long you should age scotch ales, but at $20 I’m not willing to find out with this one

A big shout out to Dan (@DIM ) for this one! Skofouke from Tired Hands. A hoppy barleywine. Not a type of beer that many breweries attempt these days!

Poured at fridge temp. Pours an opaque orange/light brown with minimal head. The nose is hop dominated. Both pine and citrus peel notes come through for me. This is accompanied by notes of apple, grass, pineapple, and a bit of leather.

The taste is really nice. Definitely a hop monster here. Maybe more than Bigfoot. Dominated by pine needles and grapefruit peel. Very slight hint of caramel, along with leather, grass, and a touch of malts. This really comes through as a hoppy barleywine, and it's possibly even a bit too hoppy for me. Could definitely mellow out over time.

Super dry on the finish. Aftertaste is citrus peel. Really fun beer - thanks again, Dan!

Alrighty, pulled out the Rum Barrel edition of Town Brewing's Varsity Barleywine about an hour ago to get to the preferred sipping temperature. Onto cracking it and the review:
Nose is very nice with notes of dark fruit, baked dark bread, and a hint of rum.
Taste is very good as the very large malt base gives notes of brown sugar, raisins, and toffee. The barrel gives a hint of chocolate along with the rum barrel flavor and a warming quality with each sip. Finishes with an appropriate amount of sweetness.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, with each sip being very smooth and satisfying.
Overall, rum barrels are not great if not used properly so i went into this with some trepidation but man, this turned out to be one well done brew by the Town Brewing team! Look forward to the Bourbon Barrel addition of this! Overall score 4.43.
    Cheers!
    Tom

Didn't read @CarolinaCardinals post above, joining him with a Rum barrel Varsity Barleywine. Thanks for sending this my way Tom!

Rum barrel beers have been hit or miss with me historically but the last couple have been good. Going into this cautious optimism...

Oftentimes rum barreled beers come across as harshly woody with minimal liquor notes to me. This one though is explosively, deliciously rummy! I get tons of of charred brown sugar, lots of coconutty rum, plus hints of banana and baker's chocolate. This is big, brazen, and an absolute treat, thanks again Tom!

Edit- nice review sir, looks like we have some overlapping impressions and a wariness regarding rum barrels lol

A fantastic one tonight! Falcon & The Falconer from Skookum. A blend of 24 month old spelt wine aged in bourbon barrels and 15 month old barleywine aged in rye barrels. Comes in at 12% ABV. Very barrel forward! Great notes of toffee, tons of rye, dates, molasses, and more rye! This was bottled 18 months ago and it's still awesome. Cheers!
