Ad Cleanup (September 2023)

    This past week I tackled a bunch of ad issues. My main goal was to clean some things up, reduce some friction points, and improve the overall user experience.

    Global
    • Disabled ads (and site notices) on the log in and sign up pages
    • Disabled ads (and site notices) on core legal pages
    • Blocked "Politics" (and several other sensitive ad categories) in Google Ad Manger
    Logged In
    • Fixed desktop leaderboard container height to stop content jumping
    • Fixed mobile leaderboard container placement to stop it from splitting the page title and description on custom pages
    • Disabled ads on core user forms (add a beer/place, report an update, etc.)
    Logged Out
    • Had our ad partner remove an unused HTML injection that I recently discovered as it wasn't playing nice with our page layout
    Hate ads? So do I, but they help keep the lights on. Protip: Stay logged in to see fewer ads or completely free yourself from ads by joining the Respect Beer Society.

    I'm currently seeing an ad for Tenmu with a woman in just her underwear and 5 shirts that say "I Love My Husband but Sometimes I Wanna Square Up" in different fonts. NextGlass can't afford to take ads off the last place on the Internet where people want to talk about beer? They need Tenmu and boner pill ad money?

    Programmatic ads are typically based off of your browsing history.
