Welcome one and all to (in my humble opinion) the best recurring thread on BA. This is where we come together each weekend to share our thoughts on any new beers we're enjoying. The guidelines are simple....enjoy a new beer, then share your thoughts on some combination of its appearance, aroma, taste and feel. It's a great way to identify beers you may want to check out (or avoid), and to live vicariously through others. As much as I enjoy trying out new beer, the real power of beer to me is its ability to bring people together, and this thread shows that you don't have to be in the same room to make that happen.

With that said, let's get to the review!

Purchased in ~Spring of 2022 and somehow just now getting around to trying it out. Right off the bat I'll say that this is a good looking beer. I'm pretty consistent in stating in my reviews that I find stouts all look very, very similar which makes them a bit challenging for me to rate. That said, there are still ways to stand out from the pack, and this beer does so nicely. Excellent head retention, and dark tan head that looks great. Combine that with really nice lacing and you have yourself a good looking beer.

Aroma, while not overly complex, has also held up well. Really nice roast balanced by caramel and dark chocolate.

Taste is heavy on the roast, with less of the sweetness than I detected on the nose. A tiny bit of dark chocolate shows up very late on the finish. Overall feel is fairly thin.

Overall, will this beer blow you away? No, but it's a very good, simple stout that would be quite enjoyable on a night out with friends where you want to enjoy a few beers without getting blasted. I have a soft spot for good beers with plenty of taste at reasonable ABVs, and a good stout at 5.6% fits squarely in that category. Great way to start the weekend for me.

Unrelated....my wife and I are headed to England in a few days for vacation. If anybody has any "must visit" pubs in London, York, the Cotswolds, Bath, or Bournemouth, feel free to tack them onto the end of your post, or hit me up with a direct message.

    Thanks @Roy_Hobbs for the start.

Today's starting beer for me is a nice light lager from a local Minneapolis brewery, Pryes.

    Pryes Pragmatic Pils
    [IMG]
Appearance: Clear yellow gold, big head.

    Smell: Light sweetness, light bread

Taste: Mild sweetness, with a breadiness that follows through the middle and the finish. Light citrus touch at the end. Light bodied and easy drinking.

Overall: I had no idea this was a 4.2% beer, good flavor for a lower abv beer! I'm tempted to bring this to football tailgating a time or two this fall. Great light lager!

. .medium carbonation with a close to medium body which adds up to a decent feel for this type of beer
.. very clear light amber appearance with an almost non existent head.
....aroma is malt, cereal and that dry dusty aroma that comes off of grain. Almost, just almost I can sense the beginning of some skunkiness
...taste is very similar to aroma with the malt being very out front but that dry, semi bitter grain building and lingering in the aftertaste.
...judging it within in its own category its pretty good, goes well with food[IMG]

    A ‘Standard’ beer?

Today’s beer is interesting in several ways. First it is a collaboratively brewed beer between William Reed (owner of Standard Tap and International Bar in Philly) and Mainstay Brewing. Below is an extract from the Standard Tap online beer menu:

    “INTL Pils [LUKR]

Mainstay collaboration brew with William Reed and the International Bar. This Pilsner is inspired by the terroir of classic Saaz hops used in the first Bohemian Pilsners and the drinkability of a lighter international Pils style. Golden straw in color with a light but firm body, this beer has a balanced, dry herbal finish. Brewed with German Pils malt and 100% Czech Saaz hops. 4.9% ABV.”

As mentioned above, this beer was poured using a LUKR side-pull faucet.

Served in a Pilsner glass with the logo of INTL:

    Appearance:

Straw yellow with a firm white head. It is a beauty in this fancy glass!

    Aroma:

Bready Pilsner malt aroma accompanied with a herbal/spicy hop aroma.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a combination of bready Pilsner malt flavor plus herbal/spicy hop flavors. A firm bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is very good! It is pleasantly balanced with bready Pilsner malt and herbal/spicy hop flavors.

I am a big fan of the fancy Pilsner glass. Not only nice to look at but it accentuates the characteristics of this beer.

    Cheers!

I hope that you and your wife have a great vacation. I traveled frequently to the UK for business but that was a long time ago so I have no contemporary tips for you. I started homebrewing back in the 90's so I could drink a beer like the cask ales I enjoyed drinking in England; my first batch of homebrew was a Muntons kit branded as "Traditional Bitter Ale". I would love to hear about the beers you enjoy during your travels if you are willing to provide some quick write ups (maybe post them in NBW threads?).

    Cheers!

Good day BAs! Well, let's see if BA lets me post here - no luck on WBAYDN.

    Today's New Breakfast Beer:

The Headless Gourdsman – from Founders. Four pack of 12 oz bottles. On room temperature shelf at Riverside Liquors, Grand Rapids, MI. Acquired 13/09/23, $ 18.00 (Including tax), $ 0.375/fl oz. Reviewed 16/09/23 (Review 3150). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Bottle stamped “Bottled On: 06.29.23 1042 6”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 64.9 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 68.0 degrees F.
    Appearance – 3.
First pour – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear.
Body – Medium Amber (SRM 12), clear. Under direct light and when rear-lite, same.
Head: Average (Maximum 4 cm, aggressive center pour), beige, high density. Quickly reducing to a 0.35 cm regular crown and a thin complete cap.
Lacing – Poor. A single irregular wave of small to medium bubbles remains.
Aroma – 3.5 – Initially very weak generic spiciness. No yeast, no malt, no hops, no barrels. No ethanol (13.5 % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins slightly sweet with a weak maple overtone and some slight generic spiciness. No Pumpkin. No yeast, no malt, no hops. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Slight gastric warming, very smooth. Alcohol is well hidden.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium; creamy; soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.5 Basically an alcohol delivery system, easy to pound and probably not offensive to anyone.
    Rating 3.47, rDev -14.1%

Which brings up the question "Should beers with no pumpkin be classified as "Pumpkin Beers"?" if they only contain a quantity of traditional pumpkin spices but are pumpkin-free? I vote NO! They should be classified under "Herb and Spice Beers.

I agree. If it has no pumpkin, a beer should not be a pumpkin beer and belongs in the other category. Not exactly sure why a pumpkin beer isn't a fruit and field beer to begin with other than the yearly proliferation.

    Batch #4 bottled January, 2019.

Rusty amber in color with a small amount of fizzy, short-lived head. Aroma is really nice. Even after 4.5 years the blackberries still shine through and are complemented by a light, musty funk. The blackberries are a little less obvious on the tongue, but there's more depth and nuance that's a little difficult to describe. Mixed berries, slightly earthy and very low acidity. Very light and easy to drink. Overall, a tasty wild ale.

Crystal clear, light amber body; decent carbonation; thick, white head, fluffy and lasting. Low-key malt nose; light cereal grain with a gentle caramel note. The taste presents a lightly sweet and toasty flavor; mild caramel; mild hop bitterness; well-hidden alcohol presence. Medium-light body; crisp; soft dryness offsetting the lightly sticky residual sugars.

A nice, well-rounded festbier, balanced and easy drinking.

Good afternoon, Weekenders! I'm just now finishing up my breakfast/brunch beer, Abomination's Midday Snack.

Midnight Snack is a series of imperial pastry stouts, all themed with different ingredients and clocking in at 14% ABV. Midday Snack, appropriately, clocks in at "only" 7.7% ABV. I don't know if this, too, will be a series; I believe this is the first iteration. I wouldn't be surprised.

This beer is brewed with peanut butter, banana, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate sauce.

Summary: this concept is better executed in the much higher ABV formats. The flavor concept is certainly there, and it's very tasty, but it lacks the impact and richness of a super potent pastry stout.

Therein lies the rub: it's still a pastry stout, and therefore not for everyone; but it's also weaker than the best pastry stouts, so it's not exactly for fans of that style, either. It's just kind of in the middle.

Again, it's very tasty. I don't regret the purchase of a four pack. But I'll likely stick to its higher ABV cousins.

Do you think the amber color is an artifact of the glass you chose?

It has been a couple of years since I drank a Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier beer but my recollection is that it was golden colored like this:
