First ever Jackie O’s barleywine! I was a little worried it would be sweet due to the style, and having honey in it. Nope! This is so good! Thanks @DIM

Old Timey from Masthead, aged 18 months in bourbon barrels.

Stewed dates and raisins drizzled with caramel and plenty of booze primarily. This is good overall, up front in particular, but the finish drops off a bit. Still plenty of booze but it dries out with light, odd notes of powdery fruit flavored candy and a hint of something almost vegetal.

Wow...There's nothing wrong with this beer. Smells like honey, lemon and caramel and tastes like burnt brown sugar and raisin and herbs..Its also thick and sticky...i've had a few 2017's, this is aging into something really great..glad I have another to try in a couple years

Welcome home Tom, hope you had a wonderful trip! Did you manage to find any Italian barley wine? I'll open varsity whenever you say.

LOL, heaven's no as i was primarily in tourist trapville! I was excited to see a 7.7 beer (Ceres) that struck me as a bland macro beer. Trip was awesome as Da Boss and i toured Italy with 50 new made friends. I think my theme song was from "Too Much" from Dave Mathews Band back in the day as much pasta, bread, and wine was consumed. Will reach back around in the near future regarding Varsity!
    Cheers!

Paragon from Lervig (Norway). This is a barleywine aged in bourbon barrels for 18 months, and comes in at 13.8% ABV. 2021 bottle.

Poured at fridge temp but allowed to warm for a while before sampling. Pours a very dark brown with a thin layer of head. The nose is full of bourbon, vanilla, candied malts, blackberry jam, toffee, figs, and plums. There is a slight sherry note as well. Just lovely.

The taste is as good as I remember from previous vintages. Toffee, grape peels, brown sugar, bourbon, plums, tannins, a slight alcohol taste, a hint of ginger, and a touch of clove. Very smooth and delicious. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice fruity/boozy aftertaste.

Glad it was a great trip! We really loved Italy when we toured it back in 2018. Venice, Florence, Rome, Pisa, and Cinque Terre. Such different and unique places! I remember stumbling across a pub in Rome that had some amazing beer.

2021 Mother of all Storms, just shy of 2 years old at this point. My last bottle.

I absolutely love this one. It certainly has the sweetness to be called an English barleywine but it has more of a balancing bitterness than most American examples of this style. Toffee is abundant but there is a bitter charred quality to it, there is vanilla but it's kind of earthy, the figs aren't sugared, etc etc etc.

In summation, this is big and bold but beautifully balanced. I haven't had this often enough to say if it has improved with age or not, but it's damn fine at 2 years out. An all-time great that I hope to come across again.

Bought one of these like 4 years ago and thought it needed more time. There’s still 10 of them on the same shelf at the same store, so I decided to try it again. This is crazy! Brown sugar bomb with an almost blueberry note. Tastes like blueberry pie!

what beer is that , from what store? I might have to pay a visit and try that. One of my best beer experiences was amburana based Bamburana from Oskar Blues/Cigar City Collab. that beer was soo good. would love to see that one again.

Cross posted with NB Weekend thread. Figured Id share here too with my barleywine fiends!
Beer is Courtesy of @snaotheus as part of NBS BIF #17 Thank you! this is Fremont Brewing from Seattle, Washington and their Brew 7000, an English Barleywine at 13.9% ABV. Ive enjoyed several beers from this brewery and expect that this one will be enjoyable as well.

    onto my review:

Sampling a waxed 22 oz bottle from April 22 2023. Beer is part of a BIF package. Sampling with my fremont stemless tulip sample glass.
the beer pours a rich , deep mahogany color with the little light that passes through reveals some garnet highlights. A dense beige head of about 1 cm foams up but is gone not long after the pour has filled my glass.
The aroma is pretty robust and malt driven with toffee and brown sugar and a good dose of bourbon. I dont get any wooden barrel notes on the nose and there isnt any fusol boozy notes, just bourbon hints. Also no hop characters on the nose.
First sip reveals a medium bodied and sticky textured beer. the carbonation is very fine and only slightly tingly. Drinks as a sipper because of the stickiness.
Flavor is definitely on the sweet side of things. I get some brown sugar and toffee with a bit of vanilla and bourbon notes too. Brown sugar seems to carry the flavor a little more than on the nose. Again no hop presence here. I do get some warmth from the booze on each swallow, but there isnt any accompanying pepper booze bite though.
The beer is tasty and enjoyable, maybe not the most complex barleywine as I dont get a lot of fruitiness or tobacco or anything , but I do enjoy it for what it does have sweet malts and some warming booze. Nice beer

The beer is called London Balling from Against the Grain brewery. Never heard of them except this beer. Town and Country discount liquors in Plainville. They have a pretty nice walk in cooler with lots of good stuff IPA-wise. They don’t get too many crazy rare things, but once in a while you can find something. This one is probably 4 or 5 years old, so it’s definitely a risk. They might not all be good since they’re not in a cellar

Gonna be a helluva BIF @Beersnake1 , I'm so excited I have to have a barleywine!

From Dancing Gnome, a collaboration with Jackie O's. Bourbon Barrel Aged Barleywine whose base was brewed with Meadowfoam honey and laid to rest in Russel's Reserve barrels.

This is really nice, plenty of earthy honey, lightly charred caramel, and smooth whiskey take center stage. At the edges are sugary roasted nuts, marshmallow, stone fruit, and vanilla with just a bit of a lingering boozy, oaky bite. Not super sweet overall, this strikes a pretty nice balance. The light carbonation is reminiscent of a classic Jackie barleywine but the body is just a touch thinner. Thoroughly enjoying this overall.
