At a few months shy of 3 years old the hops still have some bite while caramel is asserting itself nicely.

My Blue Jays are out, so my interest has decayed. One of these years!

Liking this even more than before. Malty underbelly starting to shine through.

MLB has brought me back in the fold with the revised rules and been watching the Diamondbacks much more this year. Was surprised that they took it to the Brewers two straight. Hopefully their pitching, defense, and clutch hitting will remain stellar against the Dodgers, but their batting lineup is a juggernaut! Anyway, good luck @DIM against the Braves!

Onto todays first choice, a BBA Barleywine from Jackie O's that was acquired last December. This is stellar, rated it a 4.43. Got the typical JO BW dark fruits soaked in Bourbon theme with a nice alcohol-tinged balance of the big malt base. Stellar! Hopefully we will get allocation in WNC for the 2023 edition.
    Cheers!
    Tom

Their $8 / 16 oz price hurts, but agreed they are always solid brews.

I had a ‘17 or ‘18 or whatever my first year was back in the day that was phenomenal, but these ‘19s just don’t do it for me. Barrel is there, but the actual barleywine just seems lost for style identity. It’s like a good lager. I’ll actually be glad to clear the last one to make room for something else.

Im trying to get through some barleywines and impy stouts as prep for the upcoming BIF featuring those styles. SO pumped for that one @Beersnake1 !!
This is small batch 05 wheatwine from Goose Island. This is a 13.3% wheatwine that featured addition of peaches and vanilla and was aged in Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels for two years. Beer was sent to me by @FBarber thank you for the opportunity!

    onto my review:
Sampling a 500 ml bottle at cellar temp and pouring into my snifter. Date stamp says to drink before March 6 2024. Looks like mission accomplished by me.
The beer came to me via a trade from @FBarber. Thank you!
The beer pours a very dark mahogany color and rests in the glass even darker coffee brown. no light passes through my glass. There are a few small chunks of sediment at the bottle of my glass. I did leave the last 1.5 oz or so in the bottle when I noticed some sediment in the pour.
Aroma on this one is toffee and brown sugar heavy with a little bourbon mixed in for good measure. I dont get much peach or vanilla on the nose. Certainly no hop notes here and the ABV is pretty well hidden with no spicy or fusol notes.
First sip reveals a medium body with pretty smooth texture and fine prickly carbonation. The carbonation is actually noisy with bubbling while the beer sits in my mouth. Only minimal stickyness on my lips with each sip. Overall less of a sipper on physical traits than I expected.
Flavor is sweet and malty, with toffee and brown sugar dominant. Again some bourbon comes through and on the finish I do get some peach notes, but these are subdued compared to the other flavors. Not much vanilla to my palate and never hops. Booze gives a little bit of warming after the swallow as the beer hits my gut.
Im enjoying this beer and wonder what it would have been like fresh with the peaches coming through more strongly.

    4.18 in the BA DB

No pic…see earlier one …of 2019 Firestone Walker Sucaba. Just very boring. Now I have room on the shelf for another line of stubby bottle…maybe some of the KBS blueberry.

4th D Old Ale (Fourth Dimentia) - Kuhnhenn

Exquisite, just a spectacular Old Ale ! This fires on all cylinders. The clear, dark walnut pour is black in the glass, with a wide dark walnut halo. The thin head is composed of fine chestnut bubbles that form a solid ring and fog fairly quickly. Spotty lacing has occasional patches, but the syrupy film produces voluptuous legs.

The aroma and flavors complement one another exceptionally well. Opening with rich plumb pudding, with a whiskey edge and progressing forward with toffee, charred malt, and chocolate, while the oak barrels and peat drone quietly in the background. Initial sweetness yields to bitterness without actually surrounding any ground. A loooong finish of baker’s chocolate and malt.

The body is dense, with a plush texture of soft fur. Abv leaves a light burning sensation on the tongue and throat, while fine carbonation prickles.

I paired it with a creamy and intense Stilton, which is a good call. They both come into high definition as a result. Anyone with easy access to this brewery is fortunate I intend.
