Sure, the Season Ticket first off is a guarantee of 1 of each release where you get a discount and some extras for prepaying. That's mostly it, but I'm always looking for more ways to add value for the people who take that leap of faith. This time, we wanted to give Season Ticket holders an early window to buy up some extra and anyone who logged in during the first 20 minutes of that pre-sale could buy some extra. That eventually needed to be cut off to fulfill our promise of a public sale, which still had over 1000 4-packs. Those did not last long.

Why Limit 3 and not less? For starters, look at all the continued availability of Dread & Breakfast from July and that can serve as an answer to your question. In my opinion, that was the most exciting, creative, interesting, and best tasting Deep Wood beer of the year and got an equal push, if not more. Everyone was coming up to me at FoBAB saying how great it is, yet it didn't come close to selling out in July and is still available today. A beer like Lumberstruck and Coconut Deth though sold out in minutes the July before. A lot of time, work, and costs went into DB VSOD and we aren't dying to be sitting on it for months and months due to throttling sales with a low limit during the window when everyone was ready to buy it. It's really hard to predict how a $50/4-pack will sell for in this climate, during that short 1 hour window, and we will be wrong 100% of the time I've learned. So we do our best in so many ways try to be fair, but also need to look out for our balance sheet + p&l to ensure the health of the barrel-aged program and continued investments in these 2-3 year projects.

Really appreciate that thoughtful response. I'm lucky to live out of state and have a proxy. Current season ticket holder and plan to be for as long as you all offer the option. The way this whole barrel aged release is run is so much smoother than many others in the industry. Thank you guys for making quality beers, as accessible as you can, and at a relative great value.

It's so good, but probably got hurt by not having a "V.S.O." or "Double Barrel" in the name, despite most of those barrels being extended age barrels.

Really insightful and this is the quality BeerAdvocate content I think we are all here for. Thanks for the responsiveness. I agree with your subsequent post that anything with Double Barrel in the name will fly like hot cakes and this one was no exception. I personally loved Dread and Breakfast and am definitely surprised when I see it still in stock.

Congrats on a successful release- I know you all will continue to build on the success with each release, which helps salve some of the fomo. On to the next one!

You clearly know the sales better than anyone, but I venture to say it was also a strange release for summer - Lumberstruck and the fruited barleywines over the years were an easier sell for me. I enjoyed my 4pack of Dread and Breakfast but that was enough for me at the time, and now with other choices I'm less inclined to pick up more.

Has anyone seen DT, Cafe Deth, or Deth by Cherries in distro in Chicago yet? Any indication on distro for Ryeway and Straight Jacket? I'm hoping those make it to MN. Winter is long and deep wood beers make it better.

DT and Cafe have made the Chicago distro rounds. Cherries is brewery only. Ryeway and SJ have always hit Chicago distribution in prior years so assuming the same now. Hope they make it up to MN for you!

90 minutes late to the party and DBVSOD is gone. Bummer.

Ironically I was thinking there should be plenty left since Dread & Breakfast is still available. Next time.

BA really needs to get to get a dislike button going for posts like this.

There were 3 chances to get this beer to go. It will be on draft for a while. There's still time to delete!!!!!

    Why? He was respectful.

Also, only one chance, unless you are a ticket holder (steep upstart cost for wanting just this beer), and presale for ticket holders only.

It’s a fair and reasonable question as long as you are nice about it and not an asshole. And, his post was just that.

I thought it was common knowledge that the longer the acronym the quicker is sells out. The coffee and fruited beers that don't have long acronyms would move quicker if they had more adjuncts something like- Double Barrel Aged Coffee Bean, Chocolate, Cherry, and Fig Oatmeal Stout or DBACBCCFOS would fly off the shelves

I saw Beer Crunchers response after reading, but my first thought was you were guaranteed YOUR allocation of 1 pack per ticket. Asking for the ability to be guaranteed more on top of what you paid for (especially 3 more packs) seems to reek of entitlement. Some people buy more than one season ticket if I recall correctly so they CAN be guaranteed more beer.

I really doubt he was complaining about season ticket holders not getting a full allotment if he isn't a season ticket holder.

    Agree he was respectful.

We must have read the post differently. I read it as him saying he missed out on the general sale (as in, all of the sales), and did so because that was his only option, and it sold out so quick. I read it as him saying, “why was the threshold set to 3, and it sold out so QUICK, when there wasn’t even enough for all ticket holders, let alone me as a non ticket holder”.

    Maybe I interpreted it incorrectly.

This was my intention. I am not a pass holder, didn’t have it in the household budget this year unfortunately. Brought up the season pass situation as evidence of the high demand among pass holders even outside of the lightning quick sale.

Lighten up Francis- there’s still time to delete your post. I was genuinely curious as to the thought process of how they set a higher limit when Boss Ryeway and DBVSOJ were limit two and DBVSOD was said to “clown” DBVSOJ (and even the pass holders had to be cutoff). I was not complaining, but respectfully asking a known, insightful resource for some information, which he delivered in spades and we all have a little more information about the behind the scenes than before I asked my question. Go shout at some clouds.
