Good evening NBW denizens, and thank you @JackHorzempa for kicking us off.
It will be one and done for me as I had one of the beers that @Rug sent me in Stouts and Barleywines BIF#1 - Dread and Breakfast from Revolution.
Poured stout black with a light brown head of 1 finger which was both less dense and shorter lived than expected.
Of course, considering the ABV, I should be surprised it had a head at all.
The aroma is sadly lost on me, stupid Covid.
The taste was so well blended and balanced that the bourbon, while present, was more an essence than a flavor. Sweet malt base which flies in the face of the other BBA stouts from them that I have tried; the smooth dark fruit and coffee and chocolate. Really nice.
The feel belied the ABV. A little less viscous than I would have expected but still well within specs.
OA, I drank it a bit faster than I should have but enjoyed it so much that I had trouble stopping. Good beer. Really good beer.

Very likely my last for the weekend, as I plan to take tomorrow off. This is Central Waters barleywine aged for 5 years in bourbon barrels. That's a long freaking time! Apparently the ABV is 14.9% although this isn't stated on the can. Canned on February 22nd of this year.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with a good amount of light brown head. The nose is heavy on the booze. I can't say I'm surprised after 5 years in the barrel! Lots of bourbon and oak.

The taste follows the nose. I feel like I'm drinking bourbon right now. Some vanilla and oak come through, along with some really nice notes of caramel. I also pick up faint hints of plum and raisin. Really nice and smooth!

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice boozy aftertaste.

Thanks to @Bhubbard34 for this Tired Hands Cerb Remix IPA ( with Melons, Peaches & Marshmallow ), 7.1% ABV; 4.21 overall

Pours a very hazed gold with a thumb of cream-colored head. Sheets of lacing & pretty good head retention

S: Peaches, melons & citrus, hints of vanilla once warm

T: Follows the nose, with some dryness & marshmallow up front. Green melon, marshmallow, passionfruit & nectarine as this beer warms up, a touch of cattyness too. Finishes dry-ish with vanilla, green melon, dryness & a touch of lime

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation. Once the beer warms up, it becomes creamier, nicely balanced

A good & interesting take on the style, drinks very easy

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz tulip glass canned on 10/27/23. Pours an attractive hazy yellow with a solid finger sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Aroma is peach, mandarin, honey dew, apricot, white grapes, and pink grapefruit rind. 4.25

Taste follows peach, mandarin, honey dew, apricot, white grapes, and pink grapefruit. 4.25

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, soft gentle carbonation, maybe a tad sticky and dry, and at 8% big flavor and easy enough going down. 4

Overall this is not a favorite from them, still very nice and I am not sad I have more. 4

Before I dive into New Beer Sunday #978,

    Condolences:
    • Sorry to hear about everything going on @snaotheus . Hope things improve on all fronts through the holidays and in the new year.
    • Sorry also for the loss of your longtime friend @mschrei .
    Happier times:
    • Glad to see Orin get some love her, glad you enjoyed @Roguer !
    • Nice updates from your trip @ovaltine , looks like you had fun with great company and solid beers.
Today is the second of two DIPAs planned, this one local after my venture into North Dakota. The tasting notes from Hop Butcher For The World indicate this offering has similar taste profile as my Drekker offering yesterday. Looking forward to seeing how they compare and contrast.

Hop Butcher For The World Elder Secrets of an Ancient Past

Can Notes: Purchased 10/30/23 at store temperature for $4.50 from Beer on the Wall, refrigerated at home until opening. 10/23/23 10:49:18 can date, can stamp Joey F'N Tuesday. 16 oz can, 7.5% ABV El Dorado & Vic Secret-Hopped Double India Pale Ale. Tasting Notes Candied Orange, Grassy Pine and Juicy Pineapple. Artwork by Dan Grzeca, Brewed and Canned by Hop Butcher For The World in Chicago, Illinois and Bedford Park, Illinois.

Appearance: Poured about 3/4 of the can into a nucleated glass. Pure orange juice not from concentrate appearance, creamy generous bright white bubbly head lingers a bit, does not quit settling into a rich cover over the base. 4.25

    Aroma:
Nice balance coming out, with sweet orange and tangerine balanced by a hoppy pine and lemon, medium plus strength, like what I'm getting. 4.0

    Taste:
Similar to the aroma, though with an pure alcohol at first and then after waiting a few minutes, a nice blend of orange, tangerine and pine blending well. Let this one warm a bit for peak performance, about .50-.75 better for my palate as a result. 4.25

    Mouthfeel:
Light and easy, perhaps a bit below the ABV. Creamy medium plus body, barley there carbonation, nice balance with sweetness slightly winning out, orange and tangerine linger nicely on the finish. 4.5

    Overall:
This is a very nice breakfast offering, juicy, piney, balanced, creamy rich and refreshing. I find HB 3-4 weeks post canning at peak performance and this falls in that mode. Would definitely pick up one or two four packs of this during future releases. Glad I am able to enjoy this today. 4.25

This offering was more balanced and suited to my taste than the Drekker offering yesterday. While I don't buy a lot of NEIPAs, Hop Butcher is one of the few breweries available here I can purchase that style with confidence. Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday to close out the weekend heading into the short work week for those who partake.

    Cheers!

Good morning, Weekenders! I kicked off my Sunday early, as I got up early and knocked out a bunch of house work (and coffee). So, here we are:

Half Acre Double Barrel Catch Hell - 15.3% ABV imperial stout with vanilla and Madagascar cinnamon, twice-aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels (22 total months)

Wow, what a beer! This beer has all the potential in the world, and it certainly delivers.

Bourbon is the star of the show on the nose, and that translates well to the palate. It's a world class decadent DBA flavored imperial stout. The only thing that keeps it from being nearly peerless is that the cinnamon tends to overpower a bit - which, well, cinnamon tends to do unless you carefully rein it in.

What else can I say? Oh, wait, I did say more. Full notes in the review below.

My kind of thinking: nobody’s here, but I want to be outside, so I’m finding something to do out there. 40 ish hours in my cinderblock office working with people who give not one crap about anything meaningful lately is good enough reason for me to want to commune in nature.

    Autumn
    8.2% IPA by Treehouse

    Pint can. Date 10-09-23.

An apricot yellow body with fluffy white head. Very good lacing throughout the tasting.

Aroma is delightfully hoppy with orange juice and peach tones as one might expect from a galaxy bomb.

Taste is hoppy but low bitterness as expected by IPA style (New England). No pine or dankness, but a straight hoppy citrus and peach flavor. Lightly sweet but not overly so. Finish is clean. No sign of the ABV.

Mouthfeel is very good: soft and luxurious. Carbonation good.

Another excellent beer from masters at Treehouse.

This morning’s new breakfast beer - Central Waters’ 3 Year Aged Brewer’s Reserve BBA Barleywine. An IP trade this summer with @Number1Framer in Milwaukee where he gave me the whole 5 year set, so I’m assuming this beer was canned in 2023…An American Barleywine Ale:

Poured at 58°. Fast fizzy light tan head began to disappear before I could take the photo; poor cap retention left a few very small islands of micro dots, a brief thin ring and no lace; no legs on swirl; dark ruby color with excellent clarity. Oaky bourbon and caramel malt nose; boozy exhale. Oaky bourbon entry; sweet caramel malt right behind; hop bitterness has fallen off with aging; muted dark fruit in background. Medium light body; alcohol burn on tip of tongue; full on mouth warmth from 14% abv; dry wooden barrel tongue coating. Overall, a little on the oaky side for me; drinks hot and thin; long oak linger.

    Initial notes from blind tasting:
    Deep mahogany colour.
Khaki head starts fluffy and drops off to a thin ring.
Nose definitely presents as barleywine. First off, a decadent melange of date, toffee, burnt brown sugar, and maybe a hint of whiskey barrel.
Flavor is warm, definitely sweet in the expected way for a barleywine. Again, dates, fig, toffee, charred caramel, hints of fruit that go in a mildly boozy direction: apple, apple brandy, and Bourbon.
Mouthfeel is on the slightly heftier side for a barleywine, but oh so good.
    ---
After the reveal, more time sipping & pondering:

The flavors of date, fig, and toffee really wash around. At times, a hint of toasted almond meets vanilla is also chiming in, but it really features the dark and sweet notes. The Bourbon barrel comes through in most nuanced, round, deep way. This is a glorious sipper.

Pours a thick, black color; initial thin, dark brown head that quickly dissipates. Outstanding aroma of coconut and charred grain; dark chocolate; tobacco juice; a little boozy. Deep sweet and boozy taste; sweet and milk chocolate; dark, dried fruits, dates and figs; subliminal booziness. Unbelievable heavy body; rich and thickly oily; oozes silkiness and thick viscosity; relatively light note of alcohol dryness.

This is a stunning American stout collaboration. The mouthfeel is truly unbelievable with its density and smoothness. The taste and aroma are also way above par, deeply complex and nuanced.

This beer pours black but with a definite brown hue about it. The aroma is very pleasant with hints of bourbon, wood, and the unmistakable sweetness of an imperial stout. The flavor is not overpowering and it is extremely balanced between a mellow sweetness and a lingering but subtle bitterness. The mouthfeel is smooth, but more carbonated than I was expecting. This is a great barrel aged imperial stout and I would definitely seek it again.

Drekker Cherry Cobbler Slang Du Jour Sour à la Mode, 6.4% ABV. Pours thick and opaque maroon with a one-finger pink head that left puree residue. Aroma is cherry, vanilla, cinnamon, and granola. Taste follows, with actual non-medicinal cherry, quite sweet, slightly tart. Decent thick and creamy mouthfeel, overall outstanding.
