Those rip tops would tear your fingers up after you had too many.

    Enjoy

Here in Europe, a 500 ml bottle is nearly a proper pint. We have plenty of 750 ml bombers of beer from major brands in the supermarket.

I think your photo from France indicates part of the problem. The Saison Dupont at 4.50 Euros is on the shelf next to a 750ml Maredesous Abbey Tripel at 5.30. These beers in this format, or any format, would be priced much higher here in the US. German beers can be imported for some reason at reasonable prices that are competitive with quality US beers. Belgians however are priced many times higher than in Europe. And 750ml bottles often are priced even higher (per oz.) than smaller bottles, for some reason, which explains their declining popularity.

The other problem of course is that 750mls just have too much beer in them for one person to drink at a sitting. They must be shared, and a person to share one with is not always forthcoming, especially with high abv beers. Right now I have a 750ml bottle of Mikkeller-Boone Oude Geuze in my fridge; it's been there for about 4 months. I bought it on a whim; I'd love to taste it, but I can't drink it all by myself, and don't know anyone to share it with. I thought of bringing it to our Thanksgiving dinner, but none of my relatives would even want to try it.

I grabbed a magnum for Thursday, a wild fermented, barrel aged, smoke beer by Garden Path, $28+tax. They had several magnums of various beers, and a bunch of 750s.

You having folks over? What if it sucks? Smoked wild ale seems like a narrow needle to thread for excellence.

Going to a friend's house. Putting ribs and wings on the grill. Garden Path knows what they're doing with native and wild yeast. I have zero worries about the beers quality.

After extensive scientific testing I can positively state that your assertion is false. The rest of your comment checks out.

Ah. I also agree with most of what he has written, but 750ml of Saison DuPont is something I can take too.

Many brewers in their taproom will still sell a specialty beer (either mixed culture wild or a BA-high ABV stout/barleywine/Porter etx) in a 500ml or 750ml format bottle for $20-$40 range. I have a hard time spending that myself unless I know it’s a world renowned beer.
