I’m not sure the answer, but if I gave b-bomb to myself blind, I would be very sure it was a stout. It’s the only time I’ve had it, so maybe the coffee addition skewed it more to stout than the OG would?

C'mon you've posted barleywine here that you've liked. Bourbon OE Sucaba among others. I can admit that I love stouts. It's ok, just say it man! Barleywine is good...

Don't know malt bills necessarily but chocolate notes are pretty easy to find in darker barleywine. Mother of all Bricks recently comes to mind.

    Cheers you stout lout!

Have you tried the regular Imperial Winter Ale that i posted? That's a stout

@DIM Sucaba and BOE are def more caramel and toffee dominant . I drink those regularly and have never picked up any chocolate at all . The color is also deep amber/red/brown as opposed to Fremont Imperial Ale/ B-Bomb which pours black and has chocolate front and center.
IDK if you meant those are ones i liked or those are some with chocolate notes.

    I love Sucaba and BOE

    Change my mind:stuck_out_tongue:

So you love barleywine! I didn't mean those two have cocoa notes, just that they don't taste like anus:rolling_eyes:

Anyway too busy enjoying a stout to talk about buttocks right now.

I’ll just post my preliminary review since this covers all the basics. Cheers!

22oz bottle into a tulip. Pours a slightly hazy (possibly chill hazed) amber with a half-finger off-white head—similar to the 2012 OG recently reviewed.

Aroma is sweet and fruity—brown sugar, alcohol, floral hops.

Taste is equal parts malty sweetness and bitter hops. Caramel, toffee, and apricots balanced by a sharply bitter hop finish.

Mouthfeel is medium-heavy, sticky, lingering. Low carbonation detracts.

Overall a good but not great American barleywine. It’s held together pretty nicely and the hop presence is still there, this just has never been one of my favorite beers.

Oh man. Everything except the label is miles better than last year, and I don’t usually drink the label. Excited to crack into the apple and peach brandy barrel variants.

I hear youngsters nowadays like the taste of butt, so is that to say you really like barleywines? It’s tough being old. I can’t decipher the vernacular well any more.

A Sci-fi book I read a long time ago posited that in an age where everything is recorded, language evolution, regional dialects and accents would be a thing of the past. Maybe. But slang for damn sure continues to evolve. I work around kids and I always have a tab to Urban dictionary open for when I hear something "sus" that I don't understand. It has come in handy more than once, fourth graders do not need to be throwing the phrase "salt shaker" around especially when accompanied by the (in)appropriate hand gesture.

Received a Batch #1 750ml bottle from @Mikexw 11-4-23 as part of the Barleywine/Stout BIF #1. Presumably bottled sometime in 2013; consumed 11-25-23. Pairing this with the greateast college football rivalry in America, Go Blue!

Beer poured reddish-brown with a nice tan head which is surprising for such an older beer.

Nose is dark fruit forward with toffee and brown sugar. Not getting any bourbon.

Taste is sublime as the larger malt base gives notes of caramel, toffee, figs, raisins all topped with a touch of brown sugar. Finishes with a nice warmth and some balance provided by the subliminal bourbon barrel. So damn easy to sip on!

Mouthfeel is medium to large bodied with each sip being creamy smooth.

Overall this is such a treat to enjoy something that is 10 years old. Thank you, Mike, for the opportunity to enjoy; this is a home run!
