One more new beer for me this long weekend.

    At Bailson Brewing this afternoon.

Jake Don't Play, West Cost IPA, 7.1% ABV

Pours an orange color with a light haze. A one finger white head forms with good retention. Rings and sheets of lac left behind.
Big grapefruit, orange pith and pine in the nose. Simple, but very aromatic and pungent.
Taste wise, again, orange and grapefruit pith with pine. A peppery spice, and light floral flavor for a bit more nuance. Bitterness is strong, lingering, and last a long time.
A medium body with crisp carbonation. Finishes super dry and clean. An enjoyable IPA to drink.

With almost no malt character, and the strong bitterness, this is just on the other side of balanced for me. While I would personally like a little more balance, this is not constructed for that. Appropriately so. My score may be a bit low, just because I always look for balance, but it is spot on for a West Coast IPA. Much more so than a lot of other local breweries around. Well done, even if its not my favorite interpretation of an IPA, still very good.

Overall score is 3.94, solid B+ for, and if you like the strong West Coast bitterness this will be a bigger hit. I might up the score on another try as well.

Lots of cutthroat whiffle ball with the kids and not much else today. Great day.

Having 750ml of Baaahley Wine from Goat Patch. Hop puns excepted, I love Dad joke beer names. I told my wife to embrace her mistakes. She was so moved by my words that got up and hugged me fiercely. This was aged 6 months in a third use bourbon barrel, they were looking for more oak than booze. Thanks @beergoot !

This is lovely, I get lots of toffee plus some short bread and a little sugar cookie. I love this combination in a barleywine but not many seem to be made that way. Additional sweetness comes in the form of brown sugar, dates, light raisin. There is some balancing bitterness in the form of oak and earthy hop, for the most part this is a malt bomb with restrained sweetness. I can't put my finger on which, but this reminds me of something else I loved. What a great barley wine that I never would have even heard of let alone tried, thanks Dave!

Another new beer: Beer that Built the House, a "SMASH (Single Malt and Single Hop) IPA from Ludlam Island Brewing. It's Ludlam's contribution to a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity that involves most of the breweries in Cape May County, New Jersey, including Ludlam, Behr Brewing, Bucket Brigade Brewing, Cape May Brewing Co., COHO Brewing, Cold Spring Brewery, Gusto Brewing Co., Anglesea Aleworks, Mudhen Brewing Co., and Slack Tide Brewing. Ludlam's is brewed with American 2-Row Malt and German Grüngeist hops.

It pours a dirty pastel yellow with almost a finger of creamy, milk-white head and thick, soapy lacing. The nose is mostly lemon and soft floral hops. The American 2-Row malt is front and center and give the ale an initial cracker malt taste that is augmented by the Grüngeist hops that deliver tart lemon and lime notes. There is little hop bitterness nor sweetness yet the ale is highly refreshing and drinkable. The mouth feel is crisp and lite with pleasant carbonation, and at 7% ABV it's highly drinkable. This is really a summertime beer and I'm drinking it in November but it's still enjoyable and brewed for a great cause.

Happy Saturday. I slept to 5pm and Julia and I were watching South park Christmas episodes to 5am . Now we are at rollhouse north Olmsted waiting for my sister's family to arrive. Cosmic bowling.

42 north oatmeal cookie brown ale. This was great. Aromas and flavors of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread crust, toasted oats, nuttiness, wood, pepper, pine; lt smoke, char, cocoa, toffee, cinnamon, yeast earth. Lt med pine/herbal/woody bitterness on the finish. Medium carb and body. Fairly crisp clean finishing. Balanced creamy bready malts and sticky resinous hop mouthfeel. Minimal warming 5.8%. Traditional tasting American brown with a bit of spice from hops. 4/5

On the rec of the head beer buyer at the local emporium, I picked up a 4'er of Toppling Goliath- Holidotz. I was excited to try another holiday beer as I found a keeper a week or so ago.

The can does a good job of describing the flavor notes and also indicates lager. I guess I was expecting beer. Instead, I got a fruit juice with nice beer like body and foam but over the top cinnamon. The rest falls in line with an apple pie and lots of cranberry. Way too over the top with the "holiday" flavors for my palate. I suppose this might be more of a fruit beer but even some of the Toppling NE fruit gushers are easier for me to enjoy than this one.

This is more like a kids apple p[ie juice bag to me than a beer, but a well done juice bag, just not my bag.

Rhinegeist juicy truth. Fantastic ipa. Aromas and flavors of big red grapefruit, tangerine, peach, passionfruit, papaya, pineapple, mango, melon, guava, blueberry, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, wheat, bread dough, herbal, floral, grass, yeast earthiness. Lt med pine rind woody bitter finish. Medium carb and body. Fairly crisp feel. Balanced creamy grainy malt and sticky resinous hop mouthfeel. Softer feel than regular truth on the resin drying. I love the Mosaic, Citra, Cascade, Idaho 7, El Dorado hop profile. Very vibrant, dank, clean without astringency of hops. 4.25/5

    Good evening NBW
I noted in WBAYDN that I ingested a small amount of transmission fluid earlier this afternoon. I also guessed that this beer was 1000% better tasting that Dexron VI. It might be 1500%...

    Imperial Head Hunter

12oz canned 11/02/23 poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 9.5% ABV 95 IBU. The beer pours bright light amber in color with khaki head. The head recedes to a rocky cap and leaves a web of lacing. The aroma is old school heaven, caramel, pine and candied citrus in no particular order. The taste is bittersweet caramel malt with lingering front to back heavy bitterness. Grapefruit, pine, orange candy and a hint of tropical fruit are noted. Mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with average carbonation and a semi dry finish. Sticky hop resin is prolific, but it's not cloying and doesn't drink like 9% Overall, world class.

I'm quietly thinking about drinking another of these beers and attempting to convince my wife to let me transfer to the corporate headquarters in Cleveland...
    Cheers all!

    Poured from a 375 ml 19/20 bottle.
    Bottle date 29/01/20.
    Best before 26/10/40.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 1/4 inch slightly off white head over a reddish amber, translucent body with fleeting, sheeting lacing.

Nose of raspberry, slight oak, and nice, slight funk.

Taste of raspberry, citrus (lemon, slight grapefruit), and funk.

Good, (lightly carbonated) mouthfeel for the style.

    Overall, quite delicious and refreshing!

    Cheers!!

Easy day today. Cool and brisk outside so I did a little puttering. Helped the missus set up the aquariums in her classroom for the last time since she'll be retiring at the end of the year.

This one has been hanging around for a while:

KBS Chocolate Cherry. I've not been a huge fan of some of the variants but with the world class base beer, it's really just nitpicking.

Pours almost black with some red highlights. About a half inch of brown foam that falls to a ring and a decent island.

The smell is obviously KBS. Malty and with roast coffee. The cherry comes through as it warms along with hints of the barrel. A touch of alcohol. Bourbon and vanilla with a slight woody character.

The taste is lead by chocolate and cherry as an aromatic. Very nice coffee taste and the cherry gets a bit more assertive later in the taste. Slightly boozy, mild barrel taste and a very good balancing vanilla sweetness. Kind of a cola flavor as the main taste fades.

Feel is slightly more than medium and not super thick but still decadent. Flavors are clean and bitterness is quite low. Pleasantly warming. Nice cherry aromatic lingers.

Overall I'm enjoying this one quite a bit. It's not overly flavored and retains it's identity as a KBS family member. It'll be 4.2 to 4.4 on the scale here.

New beer #2 for tonight is dedicated to @GreenBayBA. My first Norwegian beer
    [IMG]
Lervig 1349 Black Ale (a collaborative beer with Surly from the 2014-5 time period)

11.2oz undated bottle poured into a teku glass at fridge temp 13.49% ABV per label. The beer pours impenetrable black with light brown head on a soft pour because I assume this beer is 8 or 9 years old. The head recedes to a thin ring and little else. The aroma is mild with notes of coffee, molasses and earthy hops. The taste is semisweet roasted malt, moderate cardboard and coffee. Moderate bitterness. The mouthfeel is oily, sticky full bodied with less than medium carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall, oddly unique. My first 8-9 year old 13+% black IPA with coffee. I'll finish the glass, which is more than I expected today when I bought it at room temperature...

I drove about an hour today to look at an old car that was selling when I pulled up. Went ahead and dropped into a promising looking liquor store and found a time machine. There were seven shelves of bombers just like this
    [IMG]
How long has it been since 3Floyds quit selling bombers? Found several beers 10+ years old. Picked up a few things because I'm stupid. You'll be seeing them soon.

I appreciate you thinking of me, because this is absolutely the most appropriate beer for doing so. I purchased a lot of bottles of this beer. My family all emigrated from Norway, and I was born in Minneapolis, MN. I absolutely adore the collaborators who created this beer. Todd Haug, of Surly Brewing, and Frost, of Satyricon/1349. I met Frost on multiple occasions, but I have yet to meet Todd Haug. This beer was incredible at the beginning, but it fell off after a few years. The bottle you drank is a similar experience to listening to Satyricon. Brilliant for years, but then no longer so. (1349 always delivers.) Skol, good sir! Hopefully fate brings you Nogne O beers soon!

New Belgium Haze Glare IPA, 7.7% ABV; 3.87 overall

Pours a hazed & effervescent gold with a thumb eggshell colored head. Nice head retention & lacing

S: Tropical fruits, grassyness & citrus, bready & grainy notes once warmed up. Some guava & papaya also

T: Follows the nose, some peach notes, white grapes & pomelo up front, just a kiss of pineapple too. Dryness, green melon, pomelo & tangerine as this beer warms up. Finishes with a little dryness, tangerine, grapefruit & green melon

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, pretty good balance

Solid, not good/great take on the style, drinks easy enough
