    Copy/Paste from the Barleywine/Stout BIF#1

Received a bottle of Mortalis Ponoma from @Mikexw in the Barleywine/Stout BIF#1 11-4-23. i believe this was packaged in 2022; consumed 12-2-23.

Beer poured black as night with a nice tan head.

Nose is giving me mildly roasted malts, nuts, and banana.

Taste is a large mild roasted malt base with a touch of chocolate malts that is rested on and gives forth plenty of peanuts and bananas. Finishes surprisingly balanced from adequate hopping with a nice warming with each sip.

Mouthfeel is large bodied, very thick and chunky.

Overall a nicely crafted beer that gives me a whole new perspective on pastry stouts; thanks for the opportunity to try Mike!
    Cheers!
    Tom

Love this beer, but unfortunately it’s a little sweeter than what I was craving tonight. Not enough coffee coming through in the taste right now. I also just ate a molten hot (spicy) burrito a little while ago, so maybe that’s it

A buddy told me just yesterday that the new CBS is too coffee forward. I usually just think about what’s in my glass and don’t bother looking back in a critical way.

My mind is a raceway of chaos, so I don’t really have a choice where it goes! However, I do STRONGLY suspect that they put some lactose is this beer. What are the rules on disclosing ingredients? My gut reacts a very specific way with lactose in beer, and this has happened with the two CBS bottles I’ve had this year.

Here’s to a speedy recovery. 3 years ago I told myself I was done trying to go out and play 11 v 11, only to be railroaded into joining an over 40 team this past season. Luckily I’ve avoided injury but it usually took me til about Thursday to feel right again.

Drinking decently. Lots of chocolate. There’s a tannic quality in the finish that I’m not loving. Glad I didn’t wait any longer with this one bc it’s definitely on its way downhill. Still very enjoyable.

Pours a viscous black-brown color; nice light brown head, fairly dense and spongy. Chocolate and cocoa on the nose with an touch of herbal spiciness. Big flavor; milk chocolate and cocoa with a dab of rich black coffee; fine bitterness undercurrent; a twitch of booziness. Rich, oily mouthfeel; dense and silky on the palate; the beer coats the palate with darkly sweet stickiness.

Getting on three years since its canning, the beer remains a monster. The can indicates above average additions of almond, chocolate, and coffee. All adjuncts still make themselves felt. Rich and complex.

Both those places are within 2 hours of me and I’ve never been. I really need to change that. Maybe when I do, I can work out some trades for the folks here that can get those Central Waters barleywines

it’s been so damn long since i’ve had CBS that it’s hard for me to pinpoint any immediate differences here. i think the last time i had it was 2016 or 17? recall some discussion in this thread where there was speculation on whether or not founders used maple syrup bourbon barrels for this batch or just bourbon barrels and maple syrup was added to the brew? either way, this is still really good. glad to see it in 4pks instead of the big 750s. cheers!!
