Rythmic Chaos from Moonlight. American barleywine coming in at 10.3% ABV. I love that they brewed this and that they really worked hard to make a good product. An 8-hour boil is no joke. I don't think many breweries would have the ability or patience for this.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours dark brown (murky) with minimal off-white head. The nose is jam, toffee, malts, bread.

The taste is really nice. Hops (citrus peel) definitely punch here. This mixes with toffee, oak, raisins, plum, sweet candy, bread. This is definitely a true American barleywine with a nice balance of hops and malts.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a malty/hop aftertaste.

    Received a 12 oz Mystery can from @DIM 12-7-23.

Beer pours a brown with a very nice off-white head.

Nose is giving me caramelized or mildly roasted malts along with strong notes of cinnamon or cassia bark. Can’t get much past the cinnamon and not detecting a discernible barrel presence.

Taste is a large warming mildly roasted malt base, getting notes of light and dark fruits so I suspect there is a barrel presence, perhaps brandy or cognac. Cinnamon/Cassia is definitely the dominating flavor. Each sip ends in a semi-intense warming which suggest perhaps a bourbon barrel aging. Finishes balanced, each sip so damn good! Guessing the ABV is in the 11-14 range.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with each sip being smooth.

Overall this is a delicious beer that I find myself already wanting a second one!

    The reveal:

Revolution Brewing’s Dread & Breakfast which weighs in at 15.9% abv (whiffed again), a wonderful cuvee of 5 different beers and finished on French Oak, 2.5 lbs per barrel coffee and part of it on Amburana wood which was obviously very fresh! Canned 7-7-23, this beer is irresistible as I am getting wine notes and cinnamon city but not getting discernible notes of coffee nor bourbon, in which a great cuvee blend does! Thanks Dan for sharing this wonderful beer!

I'm gonna take a chance here an post an American Strong Ale here cuz I'm old, taste buds are worn out and to be perfectly honest I don't know if I could tell the difference between a 3xIPA, a barleywine or an American Strong Ale. That being said, this is terrific!

I opened Simmer DIM tonight from Cellarmaker courtesy of the very generous @Dimidiata from barleywine/stout BIF(backward in this case:grin:) thanks Christine!

I haven't had many Scotch barrel aged beers and as I recall for the most part they have been more American leaning barleywines. While some have been pretty good, the only I loved was Xyauyu Fume (Islay Whisky) from Baladin (decidedly NOT American) and this is right up there with that one.

This is absolutely decadent. Layered sweetnesses of dark honey, lightly charred caramel, European chocolate, light vanilla, faint dates, and so much more make it hard to sip this slowly. There is a light smoke here as well plus floral whisky, oaky tobacco, and hint of something mineral-y. The carbonation is faint while the body is silky smooth and leaves lovely legs down the glass. Magnificent beer, so glad to have tried it. Thanks so much for the opportunity Christine!

A wise man, or maybe it was @CarolinaCardinals , told that Bigfoot tastes particularly good after a big, deliciously sweet booze bomb. Fact check, true.

A little over 5 years after bottling, this is getting near that sweet spot. Oh man, this beer is pretty.

Tonight I am sampling Mahogany and Tweed from Burlington Beer Company in Vermont. A maple barleywine aged in cognac barrels. vintage 2023 bottle. 11% ABV

    onto my review:
sampling a 500 ml bottle that I picked up at a shop in Vermont a few months ago. My bottle says 11% not the 12% posted here.
Pouring at cellar temp into my snifter the beer is a clear mahogany color and rests basically the same in my glass. A soft creamy beige head foams up about 1 cm and fades to a sturdy surface covering that remains throughout the sampling.
Aroma is toffee and brown sugar with a bit of vanilla as well. Toffee carries the day, not very maple on the nose. Not boozy and no hops either.
First sip reveals a nice medium body with slightly sticky texture and smooth rolling carbonation.
Beer flavor is toffee and caramel with almost butterscotch quality, but doesnt seem diacetyl based. No maple, no cognac, no hops and not boozy. I was hoping for more complexity of the beer and a bit more maple coming through the tasting experience.
Overall, the beer is fine, I enjoy it , but it isnt meeting my expectations based on the brewery and the label. Im not sure I would buy this one again, only because its less than expected, not because it is actually bad.

Maja (2017) from Hair of the Dog. Vanilla Maple Bourbon Barleywine. Comes in at 10.8% ABV.

The nose is really nice. Mix of hops, vanilla, maple, and bourbon. The taste is fantastic. The hops are there, but this is dominated by sweet toffee, malts, bourbon, vanilla, and maple. Lovely beer.

Entertaining slate of PL games this morning. Decided to settle in for some NFL football with something strong.

Barreled Souls Honey Pot. Big ol’ Wheatwine aged in Booker’s barrels. This stuff is pretty amazing. No heat, which is crazy considering the 17.6% abv. Lots going on. Quite sweet, but somehow nowhere near cloying. Not sure what my expectations were for this bottle but they’ve been exceeded and then some. I think this might have come from @sulldaddy but not for sure. Big thanks to whoever it was. This stuff is delicious.

Finishing this after a couple of hours and I immensely enjoyed it. It's starts lightly sweet and fruity with notes of warming whiskey and vanilla. A woody finish seals the deal. It has held up wonderfully and I advise anyone who may have one collecting dust to pop the cap. I'm crossing my fingers I have another one in the stash!

...I have no idea if I posted anything earlier about this (to me) local barleywine, but it ain't too shabby:

Cerberus Brewing Co. -- Emmanuel Goldstein
    Barleywine aged in bourbon barrels
    ABV: 11.5%; pouring temperature: 54 °F; bottling info: n/a
    Source: local purchase
Auxiliary vice: Mashbuild -- Uncut and Unfiltered

...the beer was released over a year ago (if I recall correctly)...

This kind of info is so interesting (to me). I’ve been seeing some crazy long times in barleywine and stout recipes lately, amateur and pro. Weldwerks apparently boils medianoche for up to 36 hours some years.

    Unspecified boil time, tonight’s selection:
Luce Line Brewing Co. - Gales of November barleywine style ale.

Sparse on description, so I was expecting basically a DIPA like I often do from unfamiliar breweries offering 10% neighborhood barleywines. It is very much not. Dark, thick, a little fruity, smoooooth with that carbonation, held back with some bitterness. Damn. I will be making an effort to get more of these.

Yeah, Weldwerks are the kings/queens of boiling time. They recently collaborated with a local brewery and they went with a very long 2-shift boil. The thick beers come with a long boil!

Anchorage apparently brews A Deal with the Devil for ~5 hours. A sneeze in comparison! Though a homebrew recipe says it’s likely to take a bit longer. Always fascinating.

Yeah, don’t even get me started on the various form factors out there. Once brewers started using 8.3 ounce cans, I knew we were living in chaos. If I wanted a shot, I’d drink bourbon.

The Edge of Time is a single oak aged Barleywine. This is Batch 2 which conditioned for 14 months in 3 Willett Bourbon barrels. Fruit, toffee, and vanilla fnotes make this a guilty pleasure to drink. Let warm up and booze is masked real well. Merry Early Christmas to me!
