2022 Santa’s Brass. Aged in whiskey and port barrels. Maybe it’s because I just drank that Fundamental Observation, but I remember liking this a lot last year. Definitely not feeling it as much right now

Well thanks to @CarolinaCardinals for this one. Sent all the way back to California from North Carolina in our Barleywine/Stout BIF #1. Nicely played, Good Sir. Nicely played.

Old Stock Ale 2020 by North Coast Brewing Co.
Thanks to CarolinaCardinals for sending this to me in our Barleywine/Stout BIF #1.
Pours a burgundy tinged copper in hue. Sandy head leans forward with about a finger of fine foam that slowly dissipates to a thin cap. Very lithe, layered lacing.
Nose begins with a melange of the usual suspects. Toffee, dates, and caramelized sugars. But chiming in right away are: some deep barrely brandy notes, some dried apricot, tawny port, and a most mild toasted almond.
Flavor is still a balancing act between what one would expect from a barleywine and the brandy barrel. This is a sipper that calls to you to sit down, relax, focus in a meditative way. The interplay between everything the nose hinted at is like a tennis match played in molasses. At times, the subtlety of the toasted almond note gives way to the deep fruit. Moments later, the fruit goes from deep and almost tannic to bright and sweet, then comes around to a wet barrely must. Leather notes give way to chewy date.
The mouthfeel is medium, low carbonation, and gently warm, a hint of vanilla comes in on the finish.
Overall, a sublime sit and sip is offered up for you to escape this modern world.

Wasn't sure about this one at first. Thought it might be too sweet. But it balanced out nicely. Alcohol aroma and flavor is notable but not overpowering. Nicely done. May have to go back to see if there's any left!

I don't think they have used port barrels in recent years, recent year specific listings on untappd just mention bourbon barrels.

Liquid Loves' B.A. Jean Sleeper is one big boozy English Barleywine (13.8%). Fruit and booze dominate the aroma and flavors. There's some toffee in the background. It's definitely tasty if a bit rough. I'll sit on the other one.

When I stopped by the brewery a few months ago, all their bottles of Grand Amber said 2018.

Three Thousand Eighty from Greater Good Imperial Brewing. Sent to me by @sulldaddy in the inaugural edition of the barleywine/stout BIF. This is an American barleywine coming in at 12% ABV.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark orange - mostly transparent. Thin layer of head with some lacing. The nose is a nice mix of bread, toffee, and floral hops. A bit of honey dew and a hint of lemon.

The taste is definitely more hop-forward than the nose. There is a medicinal note, and a slightly strange sweetness. Grainy, toffee, slight citrus, pine needles, and a strong floral note. It's a good beer, but I would say the integration of flavors could be improved a bit. The sweetness seems to fight a bit too much with the hops. Very drinkable otherwise.

Ya...I pretty much liked them all. That hand of the queen aged nice...kind of like a less hoppy 5 year old bigfoot

Very good American style barleywine that my gf picked up for me at Founders in September 2022.

I had the non-barre aged one and thought it was pretty good. I think it would qualify as a black barleywine, but at the time, I thought it was a strange style that didn’t really fit anywhere

I do not recall if I had the non barrel aged version. This one is at the edge of where my tastes end with bitterness in barleywines. I like it, but it’s plenty bitter. Usually I’m more of an English style barleywine drinker. I’ll check my supply tomorrow. Perhaps we can trade and I can add one to a box.

Narrative Fermentations Consonance (Black Barleywine). Aged for 23 months in a blend of Willett Bourbon, Rabbit Hole Heigold Bourbon, and BLiS Maple/Bourbon Barrels.

Blissful. Inner peace. Joy. All feelings while drinking this beer. ABV catches you in the end, but well hidden.

Glad I picked up three more bottles!

Enjoying a 4 oz pour courtesy of @DIM , thanks Dan! Gave half the bottle with former BA BMBCLT in a recent exchange of goodies.

I am getting figs and prunes, caramel, raisins, leather, vanilla, and i believe some port or brandy barrels along with bourbon barrels. Finishes really well balanced given the strong barrel influence.

Overall, what a treat, rated 4.45! I am so desiring another 4 oz pour yet i want to enjoy the 375ml over several pours. Dan was very, very generous in sharing a bottle! Thank you again kind sir!
