RE: these crowlers...I went to pick both up on Wednesday. As I sidled up to the bar, I noticed that Marty himself was seated next to me. I ordered one draft pour each of 2019 V.S.O.R. and 2019 Boss Jacket.

I immediately went full nerd/fanboy & started talking to him. Over the course of our chat, he insisted I try the 2023 Ryeway and Straight Jacket for a side-by-side comparison of their older, "special" iterations.

Regular, fresh Straight Jacket was 10 times better than the 2019 Boss Jacket, and regular, fresh Ryeway was the same compared to the 2019 V.S.O.R. His point that aging Deep Wood beers is a fool's task was well made.

I opted to pass on the crowlers and bought 4 packs of SJ and Ryeway instead.

Completing my Chicago beer nerd fantasy camp, I wound up seated next to John Laffler of Off Color at the Beer Temple & talked his ear off as well.

    Thursday morning was...rough.

That 19 Boss Jecket fresh was out of this world though. Can’t judge how it aged as I haven’t had it in a while. But fresh, IMO was glorious. I’m also drunk or I wouldn’t comment, so please ignore my rambling.

It was FANTASTIC fresh. It's fallen off since then, even in a keg. His main point was DRINK DEEP WOOD FRESH, it's as good as it will ever be when it comes out. Also, they are getting better & better each year in this program, so whatever blows your mind this year, something even better is likely coming next year.

He recommended drinking packaged Deep Wood beers within 3 months or so.

Sounds like you had an awesome Wednesday Charlie @GuyFawkes !

As someone who still has over 100 Deep Woods cellared beers (cleared at least 60 this year), this has been my experience throughout the years. Also think it's the case with just about every barrel aged stout with the exception of those you personally don't like fresh (perhaps too hot, adjuncts too heavy, etc.).

The 2020 Double Barrel Very Special Old Deth I enjoyed last month was the one exception I can recall over time. It was as close as I've ever came to a perfect beer, but the fresh version was about the same rating.

I haven't intentionally cellared these beers as much as I've just bought too many and typically only drink stouts when it's cold out (and only one a day / a few a week max). I refrigerate all cans including all Deep Wood beers, and they do hold up well.

Just finished a can of DBVSOD. It's the biggest Rev beer I think I've ever had. Something I really appreciate about all the Deep Woods offerings is they always stay carbonated. It's still beer and has a little fizz. The flavor was a 50/50 split of melted dark chocolate and expensive bourbon. Wish I bought more than one pack. Hope everyone else had some great beer this holiday!
