Free Will Brewing (Perkasie, PA) - Beadhead.

Pretty solid - nice mild roast flavor, drier finish, and easy drinking at 3.8% abv

 

Home Before Dawn, a collaboration between Ever Grain Brewing (Camp Hill, PA) and Imprint Beer Co (Hatfield, PA). Drank from the tap at Imprint.

This one has basically no roastiness - this is all crusty/toasted bread malt flavor. Decent earthy hop balance.

Great stuff, very distinct dark fruit angle on this one.

 

Hopewell Brewing Company, Chicago, IL, “Certified” a Czech-style Dark Lager (Tmavé):

Pours deep amber/brown with very good clarity; khaki head with excellent cap retention, heavy ring and soapy lacing. Floral hop nose. Toasted malt taste; almost sweet, still with a bitter Saaz hop bite; cereal ending, like puffed wheat cereal. Medium light body, moderate minus carbonation. Overall, crisp and clean; very enjoyable.

A solid beer that I would gladly drink again.

 

I was just doing some chores in my basement utility room, which also functions as my fermentation cellar, and my current batch of Czech Dark Lager is happily 'bubbling away' in my primary fermenter.

Human Robot's Tmavy 13 continues to be my favorite local beer. The perfect balance of flavor, drinkability, and mouthfeel

 

As I discussed in my article, Czech Dark Lagers are the ‘Goldilocks’ of the Dark Lager styles for me:

“I personally enjoy drinking all three of these dark lager styles but for my palate the Czech Dark Lager is my Goldilocks (just right) style with just a subtle (to none) roasty malt flavor and a pleasing hop flavor to complement the dark malt flavors. The key word for a properly brewed Czech Dark Lager is balance: It should not be too sweet, too bitter, too roasty, too much caramel,… with no one characteristic dominating the flavor profile.”

Depth of Field Edit Beer

Fortunately I was interrupted early on with this one, as it improved significantly with about five-ten minutes of warmth. Nice charred roasted malt , black coffee, and fresh wheat bread that drifts towards pumpernickel. The Saar hops add a light yet distinct touch. Not getting any of the honey mentioned on the label.

 

Had a new to me Czech Dark Lager on draft the other night. "Starry Night" from Little House Brewing out of Chester, CT. Awesome beer. Very roasty and balanced. Loved it.

 

Troubles End Brewing (Collegeville, PA) has their beer called Baas back on tap. Had a tankard of it last night, great beer.

 

Last week I stopped at Suarez Family Brewing (Hudson, NY) when I was up in the area and picked up some cans. Right now drinking my first can of River. A lot of semi sweet chocolate flavor, a touch of mild earthy hops to balance.
