Cheers all. We have a couple of threads going about breweries opening satellite locations/taprooms and production-only breweries without taprooms—these discussions got me thinking about what most people’s habits/practices are when it comes to where they buy and consume most of their beer. I, for one, seldom visit an actual brewery or taproom. I usually buy my beer in cans/bottles and drink it at home, or occasionally I’ll have a pint if I’m out for dinner. Every so often (can’t think of the last time I did this) I’ll go to a bottle shop or beer bar and have a glass or two there. But I very rarely go to a brewery or taproom—no reason really, it’s just not something I do very often.

Hopefully this poll produces some good data and a fruitful discussion. Thanks.

If I'm at 30.5% do I round up or down?

Just kidding. I honestly don't know, but I'm guessing it will be on the lower end (0-20%)

The Boss and I (aka the Wife) go to a brewery probably at least once a week, if not twice. I would guesstimate we consume about 80% of our beer at a brewery. We enjoy the atmosphere, the variety, getting out of the house. It is pretty rare that we drink at home.

Yeah I know nobody knows their exact percentage but I wanted to give the poll reasonable granularity. And if I’d done 0%-10%, 10%-20% etc, then if you were at exactly 10% which option would you pick? Same problem there as the way I set it up.

I was just teasing. It's something I encounter in my job a lot so I couldn't resist. Super cool poll and I'm curious to see what everyone has to say.

I'd have voted +11% to minus 20% if it was an option. Ever since winning the lottery I have a professional brewer set up at my house about once a quarter, making the source come to me…..:astonished: :stuck_out_tongue:.
I very rarely have a beer when out for a meal, and I think the only taproom I've been to since pre-pandemic days is Stout Brothers in Woodstock, GA; so 0% - 10%. They're not really a/the source. They get kegs from all over the US but don't do any brewing.

Untappd says I had 61 brewery visits with a beer check-in, and I drink at least a beer daily, thus 61 is 17% of the year.

I went with 11-20%, although it varies by the season. It's probably closer to 50% in the summer when the patios are open and primo food trucks are out in full force. This time of year, not so much. In the cooler months it's mostly restaurants (with decent taps of course) or bottles/cans at home.

I think I drink rarely at the brewery, but enough to count as more than 1%.

Oh, I didn’t think about it like that. I was thinking percentage at breweries vs beer bars or elsewhere. That changes my answer quite a bit!

I didn’t say this in the OP but I’d just say do your best to provide an average year round.

Sadly, I don't go to breweries as much as I would like. Time and cost of living prohibits the good old days of my 20s Brewery crawling through the back end of Newtown, Marrickville and St Peters here in Sydney.

I'm struggling to think of the last brewery I went to. It would definitely be pre-COVID. Perhaps I'll count after Sydney got out of the first COVID lockdown, and I went to visit at mate at the 4 Pines Keller Door in Manly. I guess that counts.

But yeah, with 19 month old twins, I don't really have the luxury of visiting breweries or tap rooms any more. Hell, I'm lucky if I get to go down to the pub for a Parmigiana and a couple of schooners.

The only time I really get out to myself is when I'm allowed out of the house to go to Sydney FC games. Normally I just pub crawl to the stadium. Closest to a tap room en-route from Central Station up to the ground would be the Dove & Olive pub as they have about a dozen taps, which are all craft. But at ~$15 per beer, it get expensive really quickly.

Out my way (Campbelltown), we don't really have a lot of craft options. I will say however (having only discovered it's existence a couple of months ago), there is a micro-brewery of sorts in Leumeah (about 15 minutes' drive from my house) called 'The Beer Shed'. From what I can see on their website it looks pretty cool, so I'll have to pay it a visit soon (gotta convince the wife). I am meaning to swing by there en-route from home and pick up some of their takeaways which they sell. Those should be good to review.

The only other option I know of in the area is the OTIS Brewing which is located in the Rydges Hotel in Campbelltown. I discovered that a few years ago when we stayed there when I got married. I've created their page here in BA and their small number of beers but haven't found the time to go down there and drink them all. From memory, it's decent.

My 0-10% would be higher if the nearest brewery taproom worth a damn was closer than 60 miles...

I’m definitely in the zero-ten percentile. I like to buy my beer at the grocery store, go through self-checkout, and drink at home alone in the dark :stuck_out_tongue:. I’m an anti-social bastard…

If we discount home/gatherings, I estimate at least 80-90% of my consumption (if not higher) takes place at a brewery, at least based upon my habits over the previous six months. Chalk that up having a world class brewery in town, and an ambitious brewxploration agenda.

Overall, however, I'd say I'm closer to around 15%--once a week, in other words.

My preference, whenever possible, is to enjoy a pint at the source. Fresh is best!

I think people’s habits will largely come down to two things. Discretionary income and if you live near a city.
